  1. There may be some correlation between diabetes and the development of pancreatic cancer. Perhaps the OP feels if her relative's diabetes had been better controlled it might not would have lead to pancreatic cancer? I found this...
  2. That's how I see it. She MAKES money with recipes full of butter & sugar. Even if she personally changed her diet, I can't see her ever changing her shtick. It pays for the bread...and the butter.
  3. Add in waiting for a teacher to call you up for individualized instruction, waiting for everyone else to finish an assignment, waiting for your turn at...whatever, and you'll add an amazing amount of time to a child's day.
  4. I voted rarely. 1) There is usually a fee associated with participation and it is easier to pay for 2 kids rather than 2 kids and one adult. 2) I enjoy talking with grown ups every now and then. The one exception is monthly roller blading. The rate is cheap enough that I'll usually get out on the roller rink and have fun with the kids.
  5. Once a day unless I'm going crazy with baking or something. I run it at night after dinner and empty before bed.
  6. With any program, they are going to have to study. I have my kids write up 3x5 cards with important information to learn. Examples of diagramming, types of adjectives, verb tenses, etc. Then they can review them a few times a week. Review is essential.
  7. My Dh is a ps teacher so most of my son's understanding of ps is very one-sided. What he does think about ps tends to be true, but negative. He doesn't get the whole picture. The only totally off-base thought he has about ps is that everyone there is miserable. He can't understand how anyone, but especially boys, can be made to sit in a chair and write ALL DAY LONG. I think he ranks a public school classroom right up there with waterboarding. Both of my children understand the value of public education as a choice for families. Dh is a ps teacher & our daughter went to ps for first grade. I think my daughter's negative experiences coupled with Dad's dinner-time naughty kid stories has created a bit of a negative view of ps in general. Though most of his stories leave us laughing hysterically.
  8. Thanks for this. I can see my daughter feeling the same way. She loves discussion!
  9. I think you is taught as a rule breaker. It may be in your book. Look in the back and see if you find the word /you/ in the list of words taught that year. If so, it will have a page number.
  10. This is really what my daughter wants to do. Then she says she'll start Excellence in Lit in 9th grade. Hmmmmmm. Several of the suggestions have looked good.
  11. We don't believe the law is a bad thing. Most Christians believe that Jesus Christ came to fulfill the law not abolish it. We simply believe that Christ fulfilled the demands of the law and thus believers are not judged by the law. We are counted as righteous because of Christ, his perfect fulfillment of the law, and his offering as the perfect sacrifice. The law is not bad. It just is no longer the basis for our salvation. Back to Legalism. The problem then with legalism is not with the rules. The problem is what these folks believe the rules will do for them. The problem is that they genuinely and sadly believe that following these rules will earn them salvation.
  12. Exactly. I don't have a problem with people who choose to do or not do certain things out of personal conviction, but when they rely on these rules to "save them" they are on thin ice. One woman may wear head-coverings out of a genuine desire to follow what she believes is an interpretation of Scripture. Another does it because she is under the impression that her salvation depends upon it. There's the difference. I'd be hard pressed to arbitrarily create a list because most of this depends on the intent of the heart. We create a "family culture" that from the outside looking in MIGHT appear legalistic. However, none of us believes that by following our particular family culture that we are saving anyone. We simply feel our choices are the best for our family.
  13. My parents moved while I was in my freshman year of college. They moved from New Jersey to Kentucky. Talk about a major move! I only went home for one summer during college and could never afford to fly home during holidays, so I didn't need a room. My parents tried to keep most of my stuff in storage for me or at least asked about as much of it as they could. I was an adult. I had put on my big girl pants and it didn't bother me a bit.
  14. I had to for chemistry but I don't remember a single one. It was a complete waste of time, imo.
  15. If he is bored with MUS, he is going to HATE R&S (BTDT). I'm agreeing with the others. I'd get the HIG and stick it out with Singapore. You absolutely do not want to start the switching math programs thing. Ask me how I know. I've finally found what works for my son, but part of me really wishes we had stuck with Singapore when he did it for K/1. I'm now using MUS and Abeka. We use MUS to teach the concept and the colorful spiral Abeka for his written work.
  16. My Dad can't fix a thing and he is totally uninterested. My mother does all the maintenance to keep their small goat farm operating. Mows the lawn, fixes the riding mower, wrestles the goats and gives them shots, climbs trees, repairs fences, etc. My Dad will help if my mom really asks him for assistance, but it definitely isn't his thing.
  17. There is no way on the planet we would allow our 12yo to hang out unchaperoned with 7 boys. My daughter would be going to the park with ME or she would not being going. That simple.
  18. She is asking about the actual guy and his... I just thought bringing up the conversation in general might net her the answer she seeks?
  19. Yeah, that's my understanding. This conversation is so out there. LOL. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that a woman (a virginal woman especially) would have any kind of preference. How in the world can she even KNOW she has a preference? Uh, the only other way I can think to bring up the conversation is to talk about circumcision in general. What his feelings are about circ or not his son, etc.
  20. I don't use an alarm clock either. I'm a VERY light sleeper. My husband sets the radio to go off and it is very quiet. He'll keep hitting snooze until I come in the room (I wake up nearly 2 hours before he does) and tell him it's time to get up. LOL. What I have a physical reaction to? My son deciding to set the kitchen timer to go off at 3am just because he thinks it will be funny. :-\
  21. My understanding also. My son is circed. I didn't have a problem with it either way. I don't get why this is such a controversial subject though. If a parent/s is against circ, then don't do it. I'm too busy to get involved in every skirmish of the mommy wars.
  22. Can we just list Literature curriculum for 8th grade? I'm specifically looking for something that uses whole books and expects essay writing. So far I've looked at Literary Lessons from LOTR (daughter's favorite, but she'll have already read the books) Excellence In Literature English I (my preference) I'd appreciate other suggestions.
  23. I picked other. I don't serve starches with our dinner very often. It is usually 2-3 vegetables and a fruit.
