  1. I don't have time to read all the responses but wanted to add ourselves to the list who will be praying for you and your little one. I have actually heard of this a lot on the twins board I am on. Soft markers are only that, soft indicators. Being in health care myself I don't give them much weight.
  2. We have most of another week for my oldest and a little more to do for my youngers. Next week we add in baking class. ;)
  3. We use SL as well. My DD6 went through Reader 2 and is working her way through Reader 2 Int. I am putting these up and following a loose schedule while filling in with lots of library books. I think no matter what program we use it would be a problem, she is just an avid reader. I have the same problem with my DD10. We supplement SL continuously. I know the people on the SL board always think I'm nuts but it wouldn't work any other way for us. Otherwise we'd be done in no time. There is always more that can be added in my book.
  4. I am a member of her yahoo group. :) You might join just to read some of her posts, although she mentions posting them on her blog as well as the elibrary on her home site. I like the books mentioned for the reasons mentioned but am always keeping up with what she is saying so I can counter anything I don't agree with or see as persuasional. I also do this with my SL, which I also use secularly. It would be nice to find a completely secular curriculum that meets the needs of my children but I have frank given up on that one.
  5. Definately can't spoil and infant, not possible. :) Congratulations!
  6. Their website said she was due March 18th, so 14 weeks premature. Sadly, stable doesn't mean much in the NICU. Eclampsia becomes life threatening to mom and baby and if that was the reason for delivery than they may be done with 19. It is more likely to accure with subsequent births, something like a 60% likelihood with 1/3 before 28 weeks. It is also more likely in moms over 35. We will say a prayer for mom and baby.
  7. I second the time-release, it's what we use. That is also what the baby aspirin is for, to prevent flushing. ;)
  8. If you want placement information from the test, and the test reflects your state's expectations, then the recommendation is to test until your child reaches 50%. Then you can say your child is at the point of an average child at that level. That is what I have been told on the Davidson Forum. We never went that far. The test doesn't necessarily reflect our state. It really isn't used here. The other reason is that my DD got so sick of taking tests. She took MEAP, which is useless. This year we are going to try to have her take the Explore test instead.
  9. :iagree: My DD6's are doing Core 1. My DD, who just turned 10, is doing Core 6. And my DD4 is doing is combo of P3/4, P4/5 and K over 2 years. They are all doing really well and enjoying it (although we do use SOTW and the AG instead of CHOW). I think I'd worry more about being "behind" in the 3 R's too. :)
  10. The same thing that's in the front of the teacher's books. ;) Seriously, the student books are in the front and the teacher materials in the back.:drool5: Mine haven't come yet.
  11. My FIL tried cholesterol lowering in drugs and was taken off. Instead he was put on high dose Niacin and had great results. It is now available in prescription form again as well. Over the counter works just as well and in many cases is much safer but you do need to use it under a doctor's monitoring. It can affect liver enzymes in some people at these levels. My doctor put me on it, although I have low cholesterol because it also raises good cholesterol and because of family history they want mine high. It is often taken with baby aspirin. I now take 500mg, 250mg twice a day with a baby aspirin. My FIL takes an even higher dose. I would talk to your doctor. I can't stress enough the need for proper monitoring.
  12. My DD6's are doing it as part of SL Core 1, instead of CHOW. My DD10 is using it, along with an additional spine, as part of Core 6.
  13. :iagree: I am also interested to see how my aspie will do with it as well.
  14. I need to order books I was thinking I wouldn't be ordering until after Christmas. Do I need the Caesar's English I teacher's book? Or just the teacher's book and not the student book? Those of you who have these please let me know what the differences really are for this part of the program please. :)
  15. Is he using the online resources? If not they are pretty extensive at http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/007874637x/student_view0/ The concepts in motion and personal tutor are really nice.
  16. After reading your x-post on the other board I will add, many parents on the Davidson Forum use PLATO middle school science as an intro. science for kids your DD's age who are ahead in science. I think that is part of why I don't think it is enough for my DD, she just needs more at this point. Some come back to it again as an additonal supplement later on as well. I wouldn't rule it out and have your DD look at the demo, realizing that this wouldn't be her only experience with it and without expecting the same outcome as a middle schooler, i.e. maybe skipping the tests and dividing up lessons, depending on your DD. I will probably let me DD6's look at it in another year if they wish with the thought that they will really address it in chronologic fifth like my DD, as a middle school class. Until then it can be a fun supplement. I realize that many just don't understand that some kids just "get" science at younger ages, I have two who definately do. :)
  17. My DD10 currently does EPGY for part of her math. She uses PLATO as part of her science and will start Grammar Town and Ceasar's English I from MCT online this spring semester as part of her English. Juggling schedules for 4 kids is a little crazy and we plan to add EPGY for my next two this Spring, they already use UniqueReader for supplementary phonics and comprehension, and ALEKS quicktables for math drills (this will stop when they start EPGY). Like anything else you do what works best for your child and your family. Last year my kids did more on the computer, it was my first year HS, and we have actually moved away from it this year.
  18. We use PLATO programs. My DD (just turned 10) is currently using Life Science along with Glencoe's Life Science middle school text. We will then use the other two middle school programs, since we purchased all three, and use the Glencoe early high school book, Physical Science with Earth Science, next. I think they are good programs, especially for visual learners and are the programs used by JH CTY. I do not feel they are a complete stand alone program myself for middle school science but they are a wonderful supplement. (We are very science heavy here though so my view may differ.) They were designed as a credit recovery and do hit many important points, we just tend to go into more detail. The Life Science has been able to correlate really well to the Glencoe book so far this year. We had originally bought a timed login and it didn't work well for us so we have a 24 hour subscription to all the middle school classes. That way we aren't restricted, especially over the summer when my DD has other obligations during the day but would like to use it in the evening.
  19. My understanding was that it is a middle school class and it is supposed to be great prep for high school chemistry according to many who have used it. Some have done it as a summer class between middle and high school. I have looked at it and plan to use it with my DD in the next year. It is Chemistry Level II and according to the publisher is for grades 7-9. It is still 10 weeks although obviously the book is much longer. Is there something else out I am missing?
  20. They are very light on science and only go through "sixth" grade.
  21. Wait! Use the Key to Tracker first! Your son can then test out of any books he would easily pass, you set the % you want for that to happen and then you can also track the progress with online "check points" every ten pages or so and final mastery quizzes at the end of the books. It's only $6 for a year and helped place my DD10.
  22. We found RS4K to be a fun 'add on', we are using prelevel for the youngers and using level 1 (and level II chemistry) as a review for my older DD. (We skip the biology for the reasons already mentioned with the author, and since all are doing "Life Science" as their main science this year.) We do it as a lab day every two or three weeks. They read their portion from their books and then we do the level I lab, since it appears they are very similar from one level to the next. We make it a family project with my DS4 tagging along too. We have yet to find "the" science curriculum either, especially from a secular viewpoint, which is how I prefer to teach science. We do an assortment of things that are working for my DC. I'd love to hear if you find the "one". :D
  23. I wasn't answering to any specific post but just a general flow. ;) I cannot afford to get all the books right now and don't want that to stop someone else from considering the program because of the overall cost of a year. It might also help whose who aren't quite sure, if they know they can do it in steps and stop if they don't like it, without the major cost investment of the whole program. I do love that it is packaged that way as an option and usally love to get everything at once for just the reasons you mentioned. I am hoping to borrow a friends books until I can buy my own kit and kaboodle. :)
