  1. :iagree: with all the advice already. I am at a stage where my DD will start high school science and algebra I next year. Pretty scary for my DH and I when she just turned 10 last month. My thoughts are simple, where else would she be given that opportunity? Certainly not at our local PS, where she has "to be chronological age" to even walk in the doors. It can be scary to think ahead but I know that if I myself can't teach something, then I will find a resource that can. There are CC classes, mentors, tutors, and online schools galore these days that will be more than happy to meet the needs of my child. Until that time I am having a great time learning things I don't remember learning when I was in school., even with my younger kids. :)
  2. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108566&highlight=epgy is the original thread with most of the information, if you search EPGY you will find a few others as well that address settings after registered. HTH, otherwise PM.
  3. You can enroll at anytime. Classes will become prorated as of Dec. 1st for the rest of this year. Math includes K-Prealgebra and LAW 2-6, with Intro to Algebra and RAW at additional cost.
  4. My school district is given money for my DD to attend part-time, same as if she were dual enrolled with the local community college. So, this semester she is taking ELA, music, and art, as well as speech therapy and time with the social worker. They need to seat for one essential class, math, ELA, science, or history. She then also takes the MEAP for ELA only. If they are counted on count day they are getting money. :) Sadly, we are thinking of taking her out for Spring semester unless the middle school comes up with some different options for classes for next year. We meet with them after Thanksgiving break. We might again use the schools system once she is chronologically able to take high school classes and can dual enroll with the community college, since she has to seat for one class at the local high school for the district to have to pay for the CC classes.
  5. My then DD9 loved it. We just discussed the child sacrifice before I handed it over. We used it as part of Core 6 as well.
  6. OK, I have conceded to doing higher math with my DD10. We are starting Lial's BCM after Christmas, looks like a lot of repetition but want to make sure she has it down pat. I just don't plan to have her do all the problems, to overwhelming. We also bought the Key to Algebra series to work through. What is the progression if we stick with Lial's after BCM? Is that the best route to go? I am looking at the 1984 Foerster's Algebra I and like the simple way in which it is written. I am thinking it won't take that long to get through Lial's BCM, even if we continue with EPGY along side it. (I ruled out Jacob's, my DD isn't into humor in math.)
  7. Coming back from earlier in the thread but I will add, I have seen great improvement since we locked the TV. My children have to ask for anything down to a noggin cartoon. I still keep strict policy about TV time during the day and reserve it for things we have DVR'd to watch as a family. The only thing unlocked in the Science Channel and Nat. Geo. and they still can't be watched during the day unless it is something assigned. It does make a difference. I also don't watch any TV when the kids are awake unless it's family viewing. I DVR anything I might want to see until after they are in bed. Does your DD have a library card? Even my DS4 has one and we use them religiously. We try to only buy for curriculum (since we do literature based) and for birthdays/holidays unless something isn't available at the library and they have shown it's something they will read, such as a series with a book missing. :)
  8. You could certainly go on with EPGY if you choose. The Open Enrollment Porgram doesn't go that high right now. The other thing to consider at his age is he might find Art of Problem Solving interesting. They will provide a grade of record if requested prior to starting a course.
  9. I am going to try it again after the holidays. It was. so. much. work. It lasted 2 days and I couldn't deal with it right then and expect to get anything done. This time I am going to do one child at a time. I started last week, working on the individual jobs, a little here and there in preparation.
  10. My DD is finding it challenging as well. She just started it. I bought the Instructors Guide and don't regret the money but haven't looked at the solutions CD yet so I can't comment there.
  11. You don't have to do the Units in Order. You can get them through www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org for a reasonable price. I will say my DD10 loves the programs as well but we do use them as a supplement rather than a stand alone program.
  12. We had this when my DD first came home. Then we initiated the rule that there is no TV, computer, or games unless school related during what would be traditional PS hours. That doesn't mean they have to do school the whole time. They can have free reading time, writing, drawing, etc. if their school work is finished but none of the other. My DD also now has to "earn" her Nintendo DS, it isn't a given. This policy is in effect for all the children. It has made a world of difference here. It also took a while for my DD to realize that I didn't necessarily always expect a 100% if she had truely given her best effort. It took a while for her to realize it was alright not to be perfect, and just as important to be challenged. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes.
  13. http://www.onlineg3.com/ is the home page. http://www.onlineg3.com/mod/resource/view.php?id=162 is the list of all the classes. Related to English they do the following: Lightning Literature 7 Lightning Literature 8 Lightning Literature 9A - Mid-Late 19th Century American Literature Lightning Literature 9B - Early-Mid 19th Century American Literature Of the MCT materials they do: Grammar Town/Caesar's English I Grammar Voyage/Caesar's English II Magic Lens/Word Within the Word 1A Magic Lens/Word Within the Word 1B
  14. My DD will be starting Ceasar's English by MCT to get a feel for some of the Latin word meanings. I am also considering a formal Latin for my DC so the answers have been helpful. :)
  15. You can start whenever you register, and enroll. I am not exactly sure when the program opens to just regular pre-enrollment if you are not already using the program but I will let everyone know when I do. I do know they will let those within the program already begin enrolling for the next year from their login screen sometime in March or April so I am guessing it will be about the same time. If not the new year starts May for the 2010-2011 year.
  16. I wasn't sure how I'd do teaching it, I don't get the whole diagram a sentence thing. So...I signed my DD10 up for Grammar Town/Ceasar's English I through Online G3. Now I get to do the fun stuff and follow along, maybe there is hope I will learn this yet. :) I'm so excited for her, it doesn't start until Spring semester, I'm having trouble not telling her yet...
  17. I agree, an appeal written and faxed to a supervisor with report of reciept. There should be an address if a fax isn't accepted. You can always keep calling, but often appeals must be done formally in a written manner. Read the fine print on your EOB's to see your plan policy. Keeping our fingers crossed they come to their senses quickly! :grouphug:
  18. Well...I enrolled my DD in an online interactive class for LA today. I have heard really good things and emailed the director back and forth a little. She will be taking Grammar Town/Ceasar's English I (by MCT) beginning Spring semester. We will continue our own Lit. for the rest of this year. The class is specifically geared toward younger students who have the capabilities but might struggle with the writing, so that portion isn't done online, but left to the parent if they wish to have the student do that outside of class. I think that it will be good for her to still have to answer to another teacher. (The teacher is very interested in working on whatever individualization she might need.) There will only be 15 children per class. Since they only meet once a week it is still real Mom intensive.:) I will look at the option to add Lit. online next year (in additon to what we are already planning) so that she can maintain that interaction and discussion with other kids, but in her own way and at her own choosing. I'm not going to tell her for a while yet and won't tell the school until we are closer. They won't be happy. They will still be obligated to give her speech services, and she can take nonessentials. I also still have a meeting with the middle school next month in case there is anything of interest for her there, maybe band or choir at some point, I'm leaving that door open yet.
  19. I have gotten this question a lot lately so I thought it might help to have a post to direct people to. Technically, EPGY is Stanford University's "Educational Program for Gifted Youth". It is a series of online classes that are rigorous in nature that allow children to advance in their studies, at their own pace, without regard for their age. :) The individual program is overseen by a tutor and is very costly to most, $495/quarter/per class. A student must meet certain requirements and give proof of IQ and achievement to be accepted into the program. Two years ago, in an effort to reach more students, EPGY released the Open Enrollment Program. This is the same course material for Math K-Prealgebra, and LAW- Language and Writing 2-6. The parents becomes the tutor and a parent volunteer (that's me) assumes the role of SSA or Student Support Associate, meaning I am the liason with EPGY and oversee the program for my "class", I am the technical support. If there is something I cannot fix or a question I cannot answer then I contact EPGY on your behalf. In exchange we are able to access the program for the year June 2009 to May 2010 for $135 for both classes per student. You can also sign up for Intro. to Algebra or RAW-Reading and Writing, for an additional $50 each if you so choose. You also do not need to submit an application to register. Enrollment is ongoing at this time. More information from EPGY is available here. http://epgy.stanford.edu/district/ http://epgy.stanford.edu/district/info.html HTH. :)
  20. Yes, you can still sign up, the information is in those threads. The prorate will be $15 off starting in Dec. for this program, if I'm understanding it correctly. :) I believe it will then be prorate for each following month as well up until March or April where you will then be able to just pre-enroll for the following year at the years rate. I will know more as it gets closer, our next meeting is in Dec.
  21. I spoke with the Director of the Open Enrollment program tonight and she shared a little more information with me. So, I am of course, sharing... A few people have begun asking about next year and our future in the program. I was assured that as long as we maintain the protocol set by EPGY, mainly that we maintain the privacy of the group, and I maintain my interaction with EPGY on everyone's behalf, things will continue as they are. So everyone please remember that all new enrollments must contact me first, and that all interaction with EPGY regarding this program must be throught me. If I can't answer a question or correct a problem I will forward it to EPGY on your behalf. She did share that they will be removing some schools that are not meeting these requirements of the program. We are not on that list and I have every intention of making sure we don't get on it. When we start getting into March or April you will see a new option on the login screen, to renew and pay for your courses for the next school year! It will be that easy. I will be attending another webinar with EPGY on December 8th. There will be tutors from the individual program there to answer any questions that we might have, so feel free to share if there is something you have a question about and I will try to have it answered for you. I will also be getting more information about the RAW and Intro. to Algebra courses at that time. Hope that puts some of your minds to rest for next year.
  22. I use EPGY as a supplement. That is why I started the EPGY Open Enrollment Group, so my DC could use the program at an affordable price in addition to what they are already using. I also know that supplementation is the main premise behind the Open Enrollment Program. http://epgy.stanford.edu/district/info.html
  23. My fears only grow as we approach middle school, for her in public that would be next year.
