Fireproof Safe?

Finally getting around to being a grown up, and we're looking to buy a small fireproof safe to keep documents and other important things that I haven't thought of yet. Does anyone use something like this? Any recommendations? It wouldn't need to be too big - so far I've thought of birth certificates, passports, ss cards, copy of our wills, that kind of thing.

Any brand/type recommendations would be great. Also, ideas of what else I should put in there?

I have several of the sentry brand ones. I have a smaller cash box size one for smaller items and then 2 bigger ones that will hold hanging files for birth certificates, adoption papers, important medical records, financial stuff, etc.

We have a Sentry safe, and use fireproof document bags inside of it to increase protection.

In addition to whether or not it actually survives, keep in mind that it can take time to access if it does. In a serious fire, you’re unlikely to be allowed to just wander around once it’s put out.  Having digital copies and safe deposit copies is still a good idea.

Very good advice - never thought of that.  Thanks.

I would get one that can be easily picked up and taken with you in an emergency with the most pertinent information.  Maybe include a flash drive or cd or whatever of your important digital files.  We have several, but I can’t lift and carry the one that holds our hanging files.  Way too heavy!  I have something I know I can carry myself if needed.

My 2 friends who have had their homes burn down both never found the fireproof safes in the wreckage. Dunno if they burned or just got buried in the rubble.
that said, we do have one of the small ones for our documents- I just don’t count on it.

That is why I have duplicates at my brothers house in his safe as well.

Another idea from server farms.   Dual locations far apart.  Copies of our super important documents are at my parents house about 1.5 hours drive away.   I should probably send another copy to my aunt much farther away.   If something was big enough to effect both my house and my aunts, documents won't be a concern anymore.

Love the idea of having extra copies at not my house! And digital copies - I have almost everything in my life backed up to the cloud, but it never occurred to me to do that with stuff like birth certificates and licenses! Thank you!!

We chose to rent a safe deposit box at our local credit union. More expensive, yes, but very secure. It is more difficult to retrieve a passport, but I don't have to concern myself about anything except not losing the key (the rental is automatically deducted every month).

I'm going to add that we could NOT locate my in-laws' 1958 marriage license (after several moves).
It took a few weeks, but we were able to get a new copy from their state's courthouse.
Yes, the employee had to get out the Microfiche, in the "back room" . . . but I'm not going to sweat losing our marriage license in a fire anymore.
