sagesavannah
I have 1,350 for each semester to spend on materials for this next school year, since this year my daughters no longer taking dance and so we have to think of what to purchase. She's in 10th grade. Here's what I'm buying (they won't buy non secular items) Apologia Biology Ambleside literature (they'll buy some) Simply Charlotte Mason Ancient times History I was thinking of having them buy: Teaching Textbooks Algebra (they already have this for us to borrow so we don't have to use her funds) Biology labs- they will buy any labs related just not the books. Which ones? It's hard to tell in rainbow Resource what's needed or used for the course. Oak Meadow Health and Physical Fitness (anyone use this)? Rosetta Stone Greek Oak meadow Integrated drawing That still leaves about $900 for this semester alone.... I have NO IDEA what to get with this money and if she doesn't use it it's forfeited. She already has a microscope. She used 1500 this semester on super nice art supplies so she's not needing any right now. Any cool science kits in a Box, lab items, charts, etc. or other $$ things you can think of to order? What would you use this money on? Ottakee
Can you get her a computer or iPad and pay fees for special educational online sites? Kids in our district from 5th grade and up get their own chrome books. How about drivers Ed? Personal finance course Any other specific hobbies/interests she has? Seeing machine for sewing? Special sports or rec classes? YMCA membership for fitness/gym?
PeppermintPattie
It would be okay to not spend it, you know. Your tax-paying neighbors would appreciate it.
Ailaena
Supplements like extra math workbooks, extra readers in Greek language, historical fiction, primary source history stuff, biology workbooks or coloring books. Can you buy stuff like that?
Guest
It would be okay to not spend it, you know. Your tax-paying neighbors would appreciate it. Since she already said it I'm not going to beat myself up over thinking that my honest answer would be to purchase some fairly generic Peace Hill Press (or other reputable publisher) materials that you do NOT intend to use and donate them to a low income homeschooler who could not otherwise afford them. sagesavannah
It would be okay to not spend it, you know. Your tax-paying neighbors would appreciate it You mean like the taxes I pay every year and every day? If I don't use this money, it's just put into another families account that probably doesn't need it as we all get the same amount per child. It's also against their policies and will get us kicked out of the school if I was to buy products not Intended for my child and give them away. Since I'm buying a lot of my own stuff, and she's in a public charter school, I don't feel bad trying to use her money up on things she could use.

Using programs the way they are intended is not cheating someone else.
MistyMountain
Can you use it for PE type stuff? Then you could use it for something swimming or another extra curricular she would like.
Guest
I'd look into some enrichment stuff like extra labs, field trips, or something like a Skype language tutor if you can :)
sagesavannah
We live at the far end of the charters area, in the middle of a very large city with few homeschoolers and none of the charters approved vendors within 1 hour from us, so local classes are out. We aren't big on online programs, which is why I need to try to spend it on supplies. I hadn't thought of an iPad, I think they'd buy that, so I'll check into that. Any other ideas? ikslo
She already has the microscope, so how about some high-quality prepared slides for the Biology course? Get the best dissection kit available, too, not a cheap plastic set. (Good tools make it much more enjoyable, IMO.)
Carol in Cal.
Help for Highschool from Bravewriter is good. What about reference books, like Jenson's Format Writing, or The Elements of Style? I have a friend who used instructional funds to buy her son a sewing machine. One year I went through the RR catalogue and purchased a ton of art supplies and science kits. They have quite a variety, and it does add up. They used to have a make your own board game set as well.
Amber in SJ
I always have lists ready for my charter school if they let us know there are extra funds to spend: Supplies from Office Depot like paper & printer ink. Specialty paper & lots & lots of printer ink :) SAT/ACT prep materials Art supplies from Dick Blick Anything downloadable from Well Trained Mind Press specifically the teaching & study guides for History of the World Science Kits for enrichment. My charter school shies away from Rainbow Resource because they sell religious as well as secular so my PO has to be gone over with a fine tooth comb, so I order things from them myself. I order science kits from Home Science Tools. Last year with the "extra" money I ordered a robotics kit & a programming kit. I second the Dave Ramsey Foundations in Personal Finance kit. We have also spent our $$ on the online Driver's Ed class ($50) and the behind the wheel instruction ($400) Our charter school allows you to purchase a subscription to Kindle Unlimited. From Brave Writer, Help for High School and several literature guides. Typing or keyboarding programs. Once my kids get to high school level I never have extra money in our account because my kids classes take all of it & more, but I have a friend who had several $100s to spend at the end of the school year & I was more than happy to help her do so. Sometimes when a family tells their Educational Specialist that they will absolutely not be spending all their $$ they open it up for other people. I always have my lists ready. Happy spending!
