6packofun
Today, 5 of the 8 members of my family--including the 10yo--got a piece of mail supposedly from Capital One which looks totally legit except for a few things. It claims that I haven't been getting emails they are sending me and that I need to validate the email addresss. Blah blah, lots of stuff about how I need to go paperless and get these notifications. BUT. I haven't been getting emails from Capital One because I don't have an account with them. It says to sign into my account with the link: verified. capital one . com ...and I don't have an account with them. lol It says to sign into my account but nowhere on the paper is any account number (because...see above, lol). Also, do requests for updating email accounts usually get signed by the Senior Vice President himself? lol Has anyone else seen this? I'm assuming scam, but I'm very curious about it! maize
Sounds like a scam. Ought to be reported. Is sending scam stuff through the mail a crime?
6packofun
I have no idea! I haven't found a letter like mine anywhere online, although I didn't search for more than 10 minutes or so. Who should I call? (Ghostbusters, prob.)
Jean in Newcastle
I would worry that an identity thief has opened an account. I wouldn't give them information but I would try to find out if there is an account in your name that someone is racking up charges on. Lady Marmalade
Any chance that one of the young ones in the home took it upon themselves to play around on the capitol one website? Their commercials are pretty enticing to the too-young-to-understand-credit crowd. Personally, I would go to their website and find a phone number to call and call them directly. emmaluv+2more
Yep. Find a legit phone number (not from the piece of mail) and give them a call.
gardenmom5
Sounds very scammy.
6packofun
No bank is ever going to ask you to sign into your account from a link in an email. That's Spam 101. It's a letter in the actual postal service mail. It gives the URL in the letter to "sign in".
LucyStoner
Scammy.
LucyStoner
Contact Capital One and see if you have an account(s) you are unaware of. Check the credit reports of every member of the family. Yes, even the 10 year old.
PixieLittle
That letter came for my 6-year-old son, too. But I do have a kids savings account for him. When I opened it, it was through ING Direct, which has since been acquired by Capital One 360. At the time I think they gave you $50 or $100 just for opening a savings account in your kid's name. I logged in to my account to check on his and it's fine, so I'm not sure why they mailed the letter. I don't think it's a scam though. I finally got to talk to dh about it and he thinks it's related to the ING accounts they had a while ago. I could have sworn that we closed them, though, so he's looking into it but we think that's the issue!
Anne in CA
Some banks never let you close accounts, We had a terrible time getting some accounts closed years ago.
