I'm currently using K9 Advantix II on my Shih Tzu.

 

If fleas and ticks are a really big problem in your area, I recommend calling your vet's office and asking what they recommend.  They'll know what product(s) clients are having the best success with.  From what I've learned from various message boards, the product that works best can vary from region to region.

I second asking your vet. Mine recommends Frontline Tritak but I believe she sells other products as well. The Frontline works well for us. I hope there's nothing bad in it.

I use biospot on our lab. I was looking for something for flies because in the summer they eat up her ears. It doesn't say on the package that it repels flies, but the reviews said it does, and it has.

Frontline here too. I used to get it in the animal section of Tractor Supply a lot cheaper than at my vet.
