Well, golly shucks.

I'm not sure I'm going to succeed in the "wise" part, but I do think I'm further along in the "old" part than you think. The Big 4-0 this year! And if nothing else, maybe with all my experience, my second career should be in nursing.  Geriatrics would be a good fit. All those body fluids.    ;)

40 is not old. I don't like the insinuation.

I've seen some old 40 year olds. I'm hoping to be young energetic and sexy at 40, but not everyone is.

Well, I am.

Yes, there are some old-looking 40 year olds. That doesn't make 40 old, just those 40 year olds.  :tongue_smilie:

:D   Actually, I'm beginning to think that "Current-Age-Of-Youngest-Child" determines how old one feels.  I feel extremely old and perpetually exhausted right now.  But maybe someday I'll be able to complete a full night of sleep and a single thought without interruption?  And then (briefly, until Alzheimer's sets in) I won't feel so old as I do today??

But I am eternally sexy.

John slept through the night at 3 days old and we each took one feeding with Mary so we've slept very well with our babies. They are also best friends and not to stressful to parent. Things have been good here so far. I am currently suffering from baby fever here though. Things could change.

Ativan has been my friend twice in my life.  The first time was after the death of my father (unexpected and traumatic.)  We were very close and I was devastated.  My body decided to deal with the stress with uncontrollable vomiting.  The lack of food retention was not such a big deal, but the inability to hold down water was...problematic.  Ativan kept me out of the hospital and off IVs.  Yay, Ativan.

The second time was prior to knee surgery.  My interesting childbirth experience left me with a certain dread of medical interventions.  As the surgery approached I began having panic attacks.  I tried toughing it out and even went to speak a pastor turned counselor.  He said, "What are you thinking? This is what medication is for."  Yay, Ativan times 2.

I was able to tolerate it and mostly function (but no driving), and I am notorious for reacting to meds in  the "unlikely, but possible camp.  Oh, the wonders of modern pharmaceuticals.

You sound like my sister here.  Some meds she's a lightweight on, others require high dosages to affect her, and she uber-cautious if she gets a new one prescribed because she very likely will have the more unusual side effects.

I didn't get Ativan, but I was prescribed something for a few months insomnia and anxiety after my Mom and my aunt (godmother, second mom) died 4 weeks apart.  I took it very hard.  It was part of a very rough 2 years of my life.

:grouphug: :grouphug:   Hugs all around to everyone, because both giving and getting them is healing.

Did you hear any of the following:

Perdon

Lamento

A la...

And then there's:

Maldita sea (don't repeat that outloud)

A la fre****

A la ve***

I know there's more expressions, but my mind is going blank right now.

Okay, so educate my Spanish-illiterate mind, please.  What do these, and "lo siento", all mean?

Hmmm. I am of the persuasion that kids keep one young. At least, that's what I'm claiming.

I didn't believe my husband when he told me this at first, but then more research showed me one reason why there is actually garlic oil on the market.

Anyway, basically as soon as someone says their ear feels funny. Take a clove of garlic, smash it in pieces, and heat in oil. wrap it in cotton and stick it in the ear. If you do it at night, all traces of pain or "funniness" is gone by morning. Not a single full-fledged ear infection in the house. Ever.

Except mine - the one time I felt funny but did not stick garlic in my ear, and it turned into an infection. Happened just last year. I should have known better. I'm still dealing with the effects of it today.

I need to remember to try this the next time I start getting a sinus infection when we are on a trip.  When I get them on trips my ears usually get too full and I can't deal with the elevation changes.

When you heat the garlic in oil how hot do you get it?  How drippy should the cotton bundle be?  How far in the ear do you put it?  Is it okay to sleep on your side with the affected ear up if you have this stuff in your ear?

Geriatrics!!  A great choice!

And I am Matriarch because I am older than anyone else who has confessed her age here.  I hit the big 5-0 LAST year, and had a 5-0 pool party at my in-laws' house.  I'm having a lot of fun owning this age, too, completely in contrast to certain much younger family members who had a lot of angst over turning 30.  Really?  Feeling old at THIRTY?!?  Honey, I'm planning to live far too long for age 30 to feel old!

It's on the right board! Booya!

Which is?  Link please (if you can).  For some reason this computer won't let me go to New Content anymore, and DH has all of the other computers doing something I don't dare interrupt.

Hey. Fun game. What's old? I'd say an average of 60. I'll probably be old by 68. My mom is very old at 52. She's an addict so she's aging poorly.

When my dad was 60 I asked him when middle age was.  He said it started around age 50 and lasted around age 70, but was all just a state of mind anyway.  I like that answer.

Due to health issues my mom and her mom both looked like they were in their 90's at least before they died.  Both died in their mid-60's.

I have known several women who fixated on their "aging" appearance and kept trying to look young.  There comes a point where it just doesn't work anymore, though.  Instead of trying to look young I wish they'd just concentrate on accepting themselves as they are so their natural youthfulness can come through.  They look so much better when they are in a situation where they don't feel they have to mind their appearance, when they can just let loose and let themselves be themselves.  It knocks countless years off of their appearance, and it's all demeanor.

I forgot to answer the question, but it goes back to what my dad said about middle age:  it's a mindset.  I plan on seeing my 80's.  I might live well past that, but I have known for a long time now that since I take after my dad's side more than my mom's I will see my 80's.  That means that if I'm old at 60 I'll spend AT LEAST one fourth of my life feeling old, and I'm not willing to do that.  So, I guess I'll be old in my 90's or 100's.

I'm more concerned about the way I feel than the way I look. My relatives break easily and are always in pain. Actually now they're all dead, but watching them be old and broken as a kid was scary.

Yup, I totally get this.  I'm worried about my sister because of her health issues and her tendency to take after our mom's side of the family genetics-wise.  I don't like seeing people in pain.

Life has been eventful and dramatic.

Dad goes back to specialist June 24, then surgery will be scheduled to remove eye. :(  He is not doing well.  His shoulder is getting better, but he has no appetite, nauseous, and diarrhea after eating....He is losing weight. At first I was thinking it was because of medication from the dislocation and eye pressure reduction. But now I don't know. How has been off the eye pressure medicine for a week now and is just using drops. If he is not better next week, we will be going back to the doctor.

I had to go to a school board meeting and tell off the superintendent. Not because of my children, but because they were trying to force my sister in law into early retirement.  Long story. But is working out well I think.

Older dd tore her toenail off last week. Little ds got scratched on the forehead by the cat defending itself from the dog that has decided to stay here. Little dd was running in flip-flops and now has road rash on her right foot.

And........Older ds was involved in a flash explosion.  Only first degree burns on his right arm and leg, and a couple of second degree burns about the size of a half dollar. His hair was singed (sp) everywhere. Eye lashes and brows, arms, legs, head.  It could have been so much worse. Thank the Lord that it wasn't.

I am glad everyone is still here, and the thread is still going strong. :)

My friends all fell through and I have no one to watch the kids tomorrow. I hope my pain subsides a lot before then.

Awwww!  I hope it does, too.  Get as much rest as you can today, and tell the kids you are recovering and need them to take care of you.  I hope your DH can get you well set up with food and other stuff so you can spend the bulk of the time resting.

Wow, that's a lot, and good for you for sticking up for SIL.  I hope everyone does okay and improves in their health.  I am so glad the burns weren't worse.

Hugs to all of you!  :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
