I did a quick google and it looks like both the towns on either side of me have senior centers offering stuff like bingo, pie and ice cream, trivia, book clubs.  The other has bingo and casino trips, and women's and men's clubs.  I get the feeling they may be more for dh age seniors and not 55 year old "seniors".

Neither is in my town and I figure they probably don't let my town people participate, like we aren't allowed to use their libraries.

It's a running joke that when millennials get old we're going to hold Scholastic book fairs. That should really be a thing.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR BOOYA!

Now that's what I'm talking about!

I'm only one year away from being 55.    I think we have some activities around here for "seniors" but not as much as Susan seems to have.

I tease dh that I'm still not old enough to live in a 55 and older community.  He's 67.

The programs I'm looking at are a part of the county rec center - they have a bunch of stuff for all ages, but it seems the seniors get the classes I'm most interested in, lol.  Also the senior enrichment center is closest to my house.

Our local Y's "older adult" program doesn't start until 68 years old!

I don't like that. There's a huge grey area when it comes to age. 55 is not old, but some 55 year olds can be quite old. 68 is too late. I plan to die at 68. I wouldn't hardly get to use the program.

68 seems really old to start a program like that.  Starting younger would mean people could stay more active and be healthier when they hit 68.

Our Y is in a pretty $$$ area and their rates are pretty high in general.

I would love to live in a 55+ community. I read about a college student who accidentally moved into a 55+ community and had a fabulous time. It was quiet, she helped out, she had a constant stream of homemade baked goods and she was an expert at knitting by the time she graduated.

I remember that story.

Dh thought he was going to die at 50. He's still here.

It is kind of beside the point to start a program at such a late age, when the point is to stay active younger...

Good Morning!!!

COFFEE~D

Monday!!😩😩😩

School and work!!

We had a delightfully cool weekend, but it’s getting into the 90’s this week. Pretty typical of early fall around here.

I wouldn’t have time to join a seniors program right now.  Granted we are not quite as far along in family life as ,any of our peers, but all our kids are still at home, my job is completely overwhelming and we volunteer at church.

Good Morning!

Happy Monday!

I just checked our local community center webpage and they have very few activities for 55+ specifically.  However, they do have quite a few different kinds of activities that are available for either 16+ or 18+, which I think is a lovely way give everyone opportunities.

Good morning!  It's The Queen's favorite day!

I've been to the orthodontist with dd14 - it was a quick visit.  They said at her next appointment in 6 weeks she may be ready to get her braces off - so exciting!  Also they said the dental insurance has stopped paying them again.  🙄

I need one of the boys to get a couple bins back up into the attic.  I'm getting a few things done here and there while dd17 takes her chemistry test.

Also, I need to come up with some easy and relatively inexpensive meals to plan for between 5 and 13 people (depending on the day) at the Wedding Week Airbnb.

Coffee!

I know.  I find all these awesome things and then realize I so rarely have that time available.

At another county rec center 25 minutes from me, they offer swing dancing and martial arts/self defense!  Sigh.

I made rice pudding.  Had to triple the recipe due to an enormous amount of leftover rice.  So yummy.

GB, what size shoe do you wear?

I need your rice pudding recipe. All the ones I have tried either curdle even with tempering or are too "ricey" or all the rice sinks to the bottom.

I wear a size 7 wide or 71/2 regular, depending on style of shoe. Narrow heels, fat front feet. I look like a duck. I need a dress, too.  I hate shopping.

And thank you all for the congrats for DS24! Now if he can get a school required internship for next semester, he will be less stressed. He will take prayers from anyone willing. I posted in the Chat board about it.

Nuts.  My shoes are size 9.

Leftover Rice Pudding

1 ½ cup cooked white rice
1 cup whole milk
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
1 egg beaten
½ cup heavy cream (1/2&1/2)
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
pinch ground nutmeg
1/4C granulated sugar
2/3 cup golden and/or "regular" raisins
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Place the cooked rice along with the milk, and salt in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally until thickened and rice has soaked up most of the milk, about 10 minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, heavy cream, cinnamon, and nutmeg, set aside.

Pour the sugar into the rice mixture and stir to combine.

Stream in the heavy cream mixture, stirring constantly until combined.

Add both varieties of raisins, and stir to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until thickened, about 5-8 minutes.

When it is thickened, take the pot off the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla.

Let cool for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, and serve.

I finished reading Don Quixote this afternoon.  Every year I choose a big, thick book that I read when I'm getting some sunshine on the back deck.  I finished a bit early this year, so now I'm not sure what I'm going to read when I go outside in the afternoons.

Maybe I'll work on finishing the other 4 or so books that I'm in the middle of... :)

I just learned that the skunk that my husband considered his "little buddy" that lives in the woods by the dumpster was injured, but is now in recovery and will be OK. I learned this through an email that went out to the entire complex as so many people were inquiring as to the state of the skunk since the injury occurred. Our entire complex is friends with this non-desacked wild animal. They are having a contest to name him. The winner gets $50 off rent. I absolutely cannot believe this many people have bonded with a skunk. It's like they've never seen a cartoon a day in their lives.

I applaud you. I started that book 4 times and only made it about 1/4 way through each time.

I choose a different book each year to be read only when I'm outside.  It gives me incentive to spend time outdoors and incentive to finish fat books.  Other books I've read this way: Les Miserables, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Count of Monte Cristo.  And I feel like I'm forgetting one or two.

I probably started this book about the same number of times.  I finally bought a different translation which I think helped.

I read the Edith Grossman translation this time.

Edpo.

I have experienced a shift in thinking. There's a particular curriculum I decided to use years ago because it's the best of the best. But it's also boring and we have put it off two years because it's boring. I've realized that I can't spend an entire year doing a boring curriculum just because it's the best because I'm afraid it will result in my children losing their love of writing. So we're going to continue with the second and third best because they love it. I keep thinking NEXT year we'll get more rigorous, this will be our last fun year, THEN we'll get serious. I think we're just not going to. Don't get me wrong, we are rigorous and we are doing a fabulous job, but I've realized the necessary balance is more on fun in the middle yeas as well, and probably the older years once we get there.

What is it they love? And what is the boring one?

Good morning!

Feelings of panic are setting in.  Also dd17 is going backpacking with a Venture Crew this weekend and hasn't been able find her hiking boots or my hiking boot that I gave her.  That'll be 2 pairs of expensive boots she's lost in as many years.  If we have to go buy another pair she will have to bring her own money.

I realized last night that ds18 still doesn't have a suit jacket for the wedding, so that needs to be taken care of pronto.  Also, dd25 hopes dh's good camera can be used to video the wedding and I can't find it.  How can so many things be lost in this house?!?  Also MIL called last week and I haven't called her back.

Deep breath.  First thing is to call the body shop.

Coffee!

DS is still sick, so Camping Day at the DMV is rescheduled for 2 weeks for today. But the PSAT is in between and he has no ID, so we will have to go get a notarized letter identifying him. While we have company. 🙄

PSQ.

Notary turned us down since he doesn't have photo ID! Which is, um, the point of the form. But she has a point. I can't prove that this particular teen is the one identified on his birth certificate.

I called the College Board. (See my "There's a hole in this bucket" post on the high school board.)

Now trying to get an ID (issued by the school, i.e., moi) produced and delivered expeditiously so he will have it in time.

Nope, employee ID place won't do it even with our state registration.

I've reached out to the testing administrator for advice.

I've spent like 3 hours on this now.

Meanwhile, my in-laws will be here by dinner time and are visiting until Saturday morning. I need to take DS to his lesson, pick up the groceries, clean, and cook.

Trying to be productive.  Not sure if I'm succeeding.

It's the thought that counts, right?

I'm trying to figure out when I should get my hair cut.  Maybe Saturday.  I found the camera behind a bunch of old electronic stuff under the keyboard desk downstairs.  It's charging now thanks to a YouTube video that showed how to do it.

I am so grateful for people who will make videos aimed at people who are just at the level of correctly identifying what it is they are holding in their hand.  I.E. this appears to be a camera and over here it has the word "Sony" and a number written on it.

I want to order bulk fresh flowers from Sam's or Costco to be delivered a couple days before dd20's wedding and it is stressing me out, never having done anything of this sort before.  I guess the worst that can happen is ugly flowers or a major ice storm and a trip to the Lobby of Hobbies for artificial flowers.  Or Trader Joe's.  Dd25 is using TJ's for her wedding flowers.

When ds decided to go to college, we needed a photo id.  I originally tried to get him a passport because it's actually easier here in NJ to get a passport than it is to get a driver's license or non-driver id.   The passport rules are different for 16/17 year olds and my local post office that I went to had no idea what to do, despite the fact that I brought a copy of the page printed from the website to our appointment.  An extremely long amount of time on the phone for them to not get an answer and I gave up.

For the non-driver's license, I made and laminated a school photo id, then made a high school transcript to match.   I ended up getting non-driver ids for both kids so we wouldn't run into the same problem for dd.    Ds now has his driver's license which was a lot easier to get since he had the non-driver id.

How about Lil' Stinker or Pepe Le PU? I'm so creative.

Good Morning!

Happy Wednesday!

Trying to caffeine away a headache.  Also, I want Second Sleep, but I think it's not going to happen.

Which reminds me: Second Sleep was mentioned in Don Quixote.  Apparently it was a common medieval custom.

Good morning!

It's not even 8:30 and I'm almost ready to go!  I will be out most of the day.  Dry cleaners and Aldi this morning.  Then after lunch ds18 needs to get a haircut and it sounded kinda like he wanted me to go with him.  Then after that I'm taking dd17 to the store to find some trail shoes so she can wear them for a couple days before her backpacking trip.  If she gets shoes instead of heavy hiking boots it should be enough time.

Coffee!
