SeaConquest
Does anyone have a sure-fire method for getting rid of drain flies. We are not even sure what drain they are coming from, but they are taking over our home! Any BTDT advice?
fairfarmhand
Ahh.. We've been dealing with them here too. Everyone I know has had them REALLY bad this year for some reason. I pour boiling water in the drains, flush the disposals every night and finally feel like I am making progress. Also, I had to make sure that all wastebaskets were emptied regularly. A gremlin was leaving stuff like apple cores in wastebaskets all over the house which was a problem
ChristyB in TN
Pour chlorine bleach in the drains before bed tonight. They are probably coming from inside there and the bleach will solve it. You can leave a little red wine in a glass over night to catch and drown the ones flying around. ChristyB in TN
I don't know if grape juice or white wine will work. We never have either of those. :)
mom2jjka
The only way I have found to kill them is boiling water - Get the largest pot you have and boil water. Pour it down the drain (if it's a double sided sink - pour one pot down each) If the flies are really bad repeat 2-3 more times
Janie Grace
Apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap. It's amazing!
TrixieB
Apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap. It's amazing! Yes, this! Dh let a huge swarm into the house when he put the yard waste bin out to the curb for pickup. I put out a glass of apple cider vinegar with a bit of dish soap last night. Now it has loads of dead fruit flies... YAY! Also I tried putting some dish soap in the bottom of our food scraps container. Then I filled it with a full blast from the faucet, creating lots of tiny soapy bubbles so they almost overflowed the container. Then I added a splash of apple cider vinegar. The fruit flies just couldn't resist. LOADS and LOADS of dead fruit flies.
SeaConquest
Just to clarify, they are drain flies, not fruit flies. I tried the vinegar + dish soap method before and it did nothing. I also tried pouring boiling water down the drain, but nothing seems to stop them. We're going crazy!
Chelli
So this might be a dumb question, but.... what's a drain fly? :blushing:
SeaConquest
We bought some gel that is supposed to eat the organic matter in the sink. Did nothing. It's also complicated by the fact that we are on our sailboat, so I can't just pour Draino down the sink. It goes straight into the ocean. We're not even sure where they are coming from! Gah! SeaConquest
Is there some way to flood the whole tank, then? Do you mean the fresh water tanks? We don't use the tanks in a marina. The water is coming straight from a hose into the boat. My husband just took apart the kitchen sink and said it was clean as a whistle. They seem to hover mostly in the kitchen and sometimes the kid's bathroom. We are really stumped as to where they are coming from.
jewellsmommy
Do any of the sinks on your boat have the overflow drain hole? We had gotten drain flies in the bathroom, and they were coming from in there not from the actual drain. Treat your tub/shower drain as well. Miss Peregrine
I did the ACV/ dish soap method a couple of hours ago, thanks to this thread. Went to dinner with DH, came back and asked did if we caught a bunch. Just a few. She was shooing them away so they wouldn't drown. :/
Lady Florida.
Gunk in the drain is their food, so the best way to get rid of them is to try and clear the drain, and keep it clear.
fairfarmhand
We;ve had great success with those nasty sticky fly strips too.
Cindy in FL.
We used something like Bio Drain that you put in all your drains to clear out the organic matter. It worked for us when we had an infestation (I would kill hundreds of flies every day).
