raindrops
I'm looking for some Christian authors to strengthen and encourage my soul in the lonely moments of my homeschooling days. Are you reading any good ones?
Chris in VA
One of my favorite authors is Richard Foster. I love his Celebration of Discipline. It's pretty meaty. Brother Lawrence's Practicing The Presence of God is a quick but deep read. Anne Lamott has some rough-around-the-edges, solidly God-centered reads--Bird by Bird, Operating Instructions, and my favorite one, Traveling Mercies are all funny, deep, and thought-provoking. She's a bit of an acquired taste, but I love her.
*Lulu*
I recommend: Love Wins (Rob Bell) [even if you totally disagree with his theology it is a good and thought provoking read.] The Well Played Life (Lenard Sweet) Speaking of Faith (Krista Tippett) The Hiding Place (Corrie TenBoom)
Violet Crown
Tolstoy. No, seriously.

Chris in VA
My husband loved Tolstoy's Brother's Karamozov. I can totally see your recommendation, Violet Crown. Les Mis by Hugo is also in the same vein (classic/GB with a spiritual side).
Chris in VA
Have you read Ann Voskamp's book?
happi duck
I second Celebration of Discipline and Love Wins. I'll add another Rob Bell book: What We Talk About When We Talk About God.
vonfirmath
I'm looking for some Christian authors to strengthen and encourage my soul in the lonely moments of my homeschooling days. Are you reading any good ones? Dee Henderson O'Malley series. Starts with _The Negotiator_ though the prequel _Danger in the Shadows_ is also good. forty-two
Broken: 7 "Christian" Rules That Every Christian Ought to Break as Often as Possible, by Jonathan Fisk - one of the things I liked about this book was that he spent equal time presenting the Gospel as discussing the seven wrong answers that masquerade as the truth. So often books spend 90% of the time discussing the wrong views and the right view, the Gospel, is practically an afterthought. The Hammer of God, by Bo Giertz - it seems like everyone I respected was recommending this book. Finally I read it, and it was indeed awesome and completely worth reading . milovany
I like reading the lives of modern day saints. Father Arseny, St. Elizabeth (of the Romanov family), Mother Maria of Olenets, Abbess Thaisia, St. John Maximovitch, to name a few. As an Orthodoxy Christian, I can also recommend "Common Ground" by Jordan Bajis if you're interested in learning about Eastern Christianity. Best to you! TianXiaXueXiao
My husband loved Tolstoy's Brother's Karamozov. I can totally see your recommendation, Violet Crown. Les Mis by Hugo is also in the same vein (classic/GB with a spiritual side). Tolstoy didn't write the Brothers K; Dostoevsky did. And Yes, I highly recommend it, as well! :)
TianXiaXueXiao
I would also recommend My Life Christ by St. John of Kronstadt, Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives: The Life and Teachings of Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica, and Everyday Saints by Archimandrite Tikhon. Joanne
When I was a Christian, and homeschooling, I enjoyed: http://www.dianawaring.com/store/books And also The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson. Forgive me if she is associated with controversy and things I do not support, but I do remember enjoying The Relaxed Homeschool and The Joyful Homeschool by Mary Hood. They are vintage now. Joanne
One of my favorite authors is Richard Foster. I love his Celebration of Discipline. It's pretty meaty. Brother Lawrence's Practicing The Presence of God is a quick but deep read. Agree on both. Richard Foster also has a very practical, tangible book about prayer that is worth reading. Oh! I also liked these: http://www.quiettime.org/ Garden Tryst Change Your Life Daily
ScoutTN
Seconding: The Hammer of God One Thousand Gifts C.S. Lewis The Hiding Place Richard Foster Adding: The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Chris in VA
Tolstoy didn't write the Brothers K; Dostoevsky did. Violet Crown
OMG> I have now officially had my Classical Homeschooler license revoked :blushing: . Don't worry. :) Dostoevsky is another excellent choice of Christian writer. Those Russians!

Word Nerd
I really enjoyed Tricia Goyer's Blue Like Play Dough. It's lighter fare and not on the same level as many of the titles that have been mentioned, but it's definitely encouraging.
