Kathryn
What's up with that? I take it I'm not up on some hip new thing. Enlighten me please.
pageta
It's from Twitter. Over on Twitter #something is a topic and all posts on that topic can be linked that way, regardless of the poster. @something is someone's name.

Kathryn
Thank you! I guess that leads me to another question: why twitter? I don't get it.
Slartibartfast
You can set it up so your facebook and twitter are connected, they are posting on them both simultaneously.
Elinor Everywhere
Sometimes they are using twitter also, and sometimes they are doing it just on Facebook or even when texting. It started on twitter, but has moved on to a clever tagline to your post. Or perhaps I should say the clever part is attempted, but not always achieved. :D
C_l_e_0..Q_c
those hashtags (that's how they're called) are also supported in G+.
Annie G
What drives me nuts is I'm starting to hear people use it in conversation. They'll actually say 'hashtag lunch at Chipolte was awesome. It's annoying.

I wouldn't be able to restrain myself.
dangermom
Yeah, that is definitely a smackable offense. :smash:

Slartibartfast
They are just trying to be funny. It would be like saying, "We had Chipotle for lunch. Chipotle can also be found in the card catalog under ' awesome,' 'huge burrito' and 'fast food places that have beer." (which I recall authors doing from time to time) It is just faster to say #chipotleisawesome, #hasbeer or #hugeburritos Edited April 16, 2012 by Sis

KungFuPanda
I think it has evolved to be read like a stage whisper and is often used more for humor than organization. Sometimes it IS used like the tags at the bottom of our threads. Other times, not so much. Today I would use it like this: We learned that pubic lice is a key to learning about the evolution of homo erectus. #scienceisgross

My most recent use was when I posted about my longest run and at the end I typed "#needsaridetoUrgentCare".

For now it stays in my head. Hopefully it will stay there.
