S/O Those who have kids that graduated homeschooled...

Recommended Posts

Both of my two oldest went to community college. Ds24 is about to finish his associate's degree; Ds23 didn't care for it even though he got A's in his classes, and is now working for a DoD contractor as an information technology security specialist. He and Ds24 also have taken computer certification tests (C++, A+, etc.).

ETA: Neither had any difficulty getting into cc.

Dd18 is hoping to go to a private Christian school in Florida next fall as a music major. She was accepted to another Christian college but we did not have the money to send her this year.

Did they go to private or public college/university? What field are they studying? Did you have issues with transcripts or admittance?

Beth

My oldest took dual-enrollment classes at the local community college as a high school senior. She also took 2 certification courses through a private school. She is currently studying to become a Registered Nurse -- working at a local residential care facility and taking courses at the local community college.

We had no issues with transcripts or admittance.

I am a homeschool graduate. As are both my brothers. I started College at 18, my transcripts came from my umbrellas school and my ACT was good enough that I needed no math or languauge remedial classes, whiich were quite common at the community college I attended. It got my AA in Interdisciplinary Studies.

My next younger brother started college at 17 I think. He got his AA from the same community college, then went to another college in state for a semester. Then he went on his mission for our church and then off to BYU when he returned. He got is degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer.

My youngest brother did the community college route as well. Now is off working finishing his BS in Ag something or other.

My son is a senior in a private American university's campus in Japan. He'll graduate next year with a degree in International Relations and a minor in Japanese.

We didn't have any trouble with his transcript or admittance. He applied to and was accepted at several universities. Our biggest problem was that I had been reluctant to put his SSN on his transcript which meant that the big universities had trouble matching his SATs to the transcript. I was glad that he had taken community college classes so that we could easily get the letters of recommendation he needed. We had the most trouble getting the community service hours to look more presentable - he didn't do much and it was limited to volunteer coaching and ref'ing.

The college counselor part of homeschooling was by far the worst part of high school.

eta: My son took two SAT IIs (math and literature) because a few of the colleges he was looking at required them of homeschoolers.

My oldest is a sophomore at a private Christian college and got accepted to two others (no rejections). He had no issues whatsoever, but the school is not super competitive if you have good scores and good recommendations. It was still his #1 choice and he got nice merit aid to assist with tuition and fees. He also won two outside scholarships.

Middle son is looking at more competitive schools and trying for high merit aid. He has already been accepted at a large public U that has rolling admissions and has free tuition from them based on his ACT score. He will probably apply to 4 - 5 other schools and see who gives him the most money as a major deciding factor since he's already cut schools he didn't like.

The only school he cut due to being a homeschooler was Emory in Georgia because they required 3 SAT II tests of homeschoolers, but not from ps students. It was the ONLY school he was considering who required any SAT II scores and the fact that they only required them of homeschoolers just pushed the "off" button for him. He has 2 community college classes (both As) and one AP score (5) and felt those plus his high ACT could adequately show his ability as well as SAT II tests. (Plus, other colleges told him the other things he had done would be "perfect" for showing ability.)

Every single college we visited told us they welcome homeschoolers, but top schools tend to want to see outside verification of grades via AP or IB tests, cc classes, or SAT II tests. For most schools, these are an "or." At Emory, they weren't. Middle son didn't even want to visit Emory once he heard the news. His ACT score was above their top 25%.

DD20 attends Florida's public honors college (New College of Florida) with a Bright Futures scholarship. She is currently doing a semester abroad. Her areas of concentration (dual major) are Music and History. She is preparing to write her thesis on Opera.

DD17 is still in high school but takes dual enrollment classes at the local community college.

In the picture below, dd20 is on the left wearing a hat - she doesn't look like this anymore, she as contacts, a nose ring, and her hair is bright blue and cut in a pixie cut (very cute).

Dd went to a private Lutheran school for K, 5th, and 6th grade. We homeschooled all of the other years. I generated her transcripts, portfolios (which not one single college asked for :glare: - very disappointing becuase I wanted to show off her work - she did some amazing things), and attached reading/text lists along with a summary of my grading philosophy and procedure to her transcript. Dd applied to and was accepted at 12 universities. U of M, MSU (the big Michigan state schools), Ferris State, Wayne State, Cedarville University, Ohio State, Iowa State,..... you get the picture and one "safety" school which offered her about 85% merit aid when it was all added up - so would have been a mega cheap option - but then we discovered that their program was poor....not what you want when going into medicine.

DD is a paramedic who went to paramedic school and began pre-med at the same time. She does not want student loans and our college money for her has run out, leaving her with a few thousand to pay after all of her scholarships which were fairly plentiful, so she is going to take two years off, work as a medic, save her salary, and go back to school to finish though it looks like she's not going to med-school. Possibily a bachelor's of emergency medical management with a master's degree in some sort of emergency management which will qualify her to do something with organizing responses to disasters....FEMA type stuff. She isn't entirely certain yet. She just loves emergency/trauma work and has decided that she doesn't want to go to med school.

The current plan is to homeschool all of them through high school. They are thriving, learning, developing well and all headed for STEM or STEM related fields as dh and I's science genes appear to have been heavily distributed to our offspring.

The 14 year old went to the Lutheran school for k and has been homeschooled since. The next two boys have been homeschooled exclusively.

Our son dual enrolled at 10th grade and completed his AA at a local college and transferred to UCF and is living on campus and in the Digital Media Program. He scored very well on his ACT, has a full Bright Futures Scholarship and nobody ever questioned his transcripts that I provided. We had no problems whatsoever. Everyone at the colleges were very helpful and pleasant to work with. :D

The girls went on to private colleges...both with very nice scholarships. DD#1 became a graphic designer and works for a National company

DD #2 is a senior and she is studying Nutrition then plans to be com a Chiropractor

Ds is planning on teaching...Physical ed to Special Ed kids.

Ds#2 is finishing up here then will do CC courses online while working for and with his dad in our family business. That is his choice for now...

ETA...I was never asked for a transscript, but I had worked so hard to make a nice one, we submitted it anyway. The girls both took an SAT and aced the verbal/ bombed the math...sorry.

DS never took an SAT....

All 3 had to take the Compass exam and placed well into College level classes...even in Math. The colleges they transferred to were more interested in their CC studies and their extra curricula experiences.. of which they had many....

DS#1: State university - Petroleum Engineering

DS#2: State university - Mechanical Engineering

No problems with mommy transcript but we paired it with community college and regional 4 year university transcripts from concurrent enrollment for both boys. SATs and ACTs were at least equally important (for scholarship purposes, they were more important than transcripts).

dd1: public university, biology/pre med (subsequently went to med school (private) and graduated at the top of her class).

ds: public university, electrical engineering.

dd2: public university, studio art/honors college.

No problems with transcripts. Dd2 also applied to a private university that required a GED from homeschoolers. We challenged it, "educated them" about homeschooling, and they changed their policy. Dd was accepted into their honors college, but decided to go to the public university after all.

All three had SAT scores that qualified them for full tuition scholarships. I agree that the test scores were probably more important than the transcripts.

He is majoring in engineering at the state university.

No problems with admissions or transcripts.

We had looked into admissions policy in his junior year. So we knew what the requirements were. There were some subjects that either needed to be accredited or have subject tests. So we made sure he either went to community college for a class in those subjects or tested.

We did have a few questions. Our University had a person assigend to homeschool admissions who was very helpful.

My siblings and I were all homeschooled.

I went to a state university, my brothers went to ivy league schools although one had a year of credits from a state university and one had two years from a community college. The only one that gave trouble was the community college (NY state colleges are quite weird about homeschoolers.) They required an ability to benefit test, which basically meant take the Accuplacer.

#1 Community college to private college to state university - law

#2 Community college to state university - accounting

#3 Community college to state university - forestry

#4 Community college to private college - applied theology

Never any problems with transcripts and such, but that was quite a few years ago so things may have changed some. I plan to keep detailed transcripts for ds13.
