Hello,

My husband and I are considering Netflix, but haven't decided quite yet. We will probably do the free trial to try it out first, but I would also love to hear from anyone that already has it. What are your thoughts?

Here is what we are thinking. We pay quite a bit for U-verse right now and while we love it, we need to cut somewhere. Netflix seems very affordable.

Now we do have our favorites on TV. For example, I love HGTV, especially House Hunters. My husband loves Fox news. Together, we enjoy Food Network.

Are we able to get any of these shows on Netflix? Also, how would we go about having the local channels? I am sure there is a very simple answer to this, I just haven't researched much yet.

Any input is welcome. Thanks so much! Have a great day! :)

We got rid of our cable months ago and LOVE, LOVE our Netflix!!! In the middle of winter, my dd asked to subscribe for the free trial and I reluctantly said yes. Wow! Best 'Yes' we ever made. We get all the news on the internet----no waiting for all those annoying Viagra etc. commercials, no endless talking and speculating from the news folks about all the salacious news going on----just pure news. THEN----the best part is that we have the mail Netflix and the instant streaming on Wii and Xbox and can watch documentaries galore, movies, even TV shows----some even current. NO commercials, pause and come back whenever to finish a show or movie. We will NEVER, EVER go back to regular Captive Audience TV again ;)

We like Netflix. We have the 2 disc selection, although we probably should drop back to 1 disc.

There are a lot of instant watch shows now.

You would not get current tv. For that, you might want to look at Hulu or Hulu Plus (depending on what shows you want). My husband misses sports and ESPN doesn't show video of games generally.

We don't have cable in the house - just internet. We use rabbit ears for the tv and do get basic channels... usually :) I think sometimes CBS/ABC don't come in well. But we just don't watch tv.

We LOVE Netflix!! We have a Roku player, which I strongly recommend. It is $100 (one time fee and then you own the Roku player), but much easier to use than the wii. We get Hulu on the Roku to watch TV, including the HGTV channel, and I love listening to music with Pandora :) My husband also has a bunch of other channels on the Roku player that he watches too (we don't have cable, just internet). All of which is free. I love streaming Netflix for my kids too - you can set it to allow only certain rating levels without a password. We only get 1 DVD at a time and it is only $10 per month.

May I ask why the Roku is easier to use than the Wii? All I do is turn on my Wii, click Netflix, choose my show, and watch it.

My mom has a Roku because they don't play video games. She likes it.

You can get your local channels with an old fashioned antenna on the roof. It'll only work with hd tvs or with the box you can buy, but then you get all your locals for free. And the quality is excellent. We pick up abc, nbc, cbs, fox, 3 or 4 different pbs channels (one of those is pbs kids so we can get kid shows all day), a couple of eduational channels, and oddly enough, a home shopping channel...lol. We live at least 2 hours away from where these channels come from but they come in very clearly. We also have netflix so we have plenty of movies. And so many things are online to watch for free, dh hooked the laptop up to the tv and we watch things that way too. But I think you can get a roku box that will stream anything from the internet to your tv and that would be easier.

We just gave up cable and it is killing me because I can't watch the 3 channels you mentioned. Netflix is cool and you can find a lot of shows and movies to watch instantly. I've also found some House Hunters and Food Network shows on Hulu; it's just hit and miss.

We have Netflix streaming through our Wii and Apple TV. I wish I could get Hulu through the Apple TV but it's apparently blocked. I don't know how to get it on the TV otherwise so I'm left to watching it on the computer.

I'm intrigued by Roku but still not sure exactly what it is? Overall though, giving up cable hasn't been too bad!

We love Netflix! I thought it would be hard to give up cable, and I do confess that I miss being able to watch dog shows, but overall it's been really good. We can watch tons of TV shows on Netflix, as well as movies, with the instant streaming option. We get 1 disc at a time, because with all the instant streaming available, we don't need more than that.

We watch through our PS3, or through AppleTV (I think, not sure how dh has that set up). It's very easy. We, too, cut cable for budget reasons, and for the most part haven't looked back!

We've had Netflix for several months and are pretty happy with it, even though it's just *different* from having satellite.

We bought a computer that is dedicated to the TV, so we watch network shows on the actual networks via Internet (most are available; the ones which aren't will be available at some point in the future from Netflix, in which case we'll just do that). Next week is the new seasons for the Closer, Burn Notice, and a couple of others, I'm sure; we'll long on to USA and TNT and watch whenever we want to.

I've watched enough House Huntes and Candace Olsen LIsa LaPorta and everyone else that I should be able to get some sort of certificate, lol, so it's ok if I never watch them again. :001_smile:

We haven't had cable in a dozen years or so. We get very clear local channels from a $30 antenna next to the TV.

We have Netflix, and I really like it. We live out in the middle of nowhere, so we can't get great internet, so no streaming movies, but it still works out. The mailing is quick, and we get another movie about 3 days after we send one. We have the $6.99, which is one out at a time, and we get 4-6 DVDs a month.

We LOVE our Netflix! We stream it through our Blu-Ray player (it's a Vizio), but if we had done more research, like we should've we would've gotten a Roku. In fact, we might be getting a Roku soon, b/c we're just not happy with our Vizio. It works all right for a player, but the connection and such... we're just not thrilled.

Anyway, but Netflix is a definite must in this house! I put a ton of approved shows for our kids to watch on our Instant Queue, and they're only allowed to stay on that. Then, I'm able to stay aware of what's going on. :) LOVE it.

I wish we could get Fox News, HGTV too without having to buy Cable. Now I listen to Fox News on our XM radio, but that doesn't always work out esp when they ask you to look at the video and then there is no way they could have an HGTV on XM radio! It is TV or visual after all. Oh, well life is still good without the Cable

.

Our blu-ray player is pretty useless as well for online channels. It's a Sony. The wi-fi connection stinks so I'm glad that we have our Wii. (It might work better if we had it hard-wired.) DH didn't do his research either. The reviews were full of the wi-fi complaint!

So, PSA - before buying equipment, at least read the reviews on more than one site!!

For the OP - a digital antenna, should get you your local broadcast channels.

If you’ve already got a Wii and a Netflix account, and you don’t already have something connected to stream movies, the Wii option is a fine way to go (especially because it’s free). As long as you don't mind that it is analog, and isn't HD :) And as long as you aren't looking for a lot of extra "channels" :) The wii remote can be tough for some people to use - me :D If you’ve got room on your entertainment unit for another (small) device, and don’t mind shelling out 100 bucks to get it, and want better quality (and a bit more convenience, remote-wise), plus lots more channels (including HGTV), pick up a Roku player.

Girl, you already missed at least one episode of the new season of Burn Notice. I hope you can catch it online. And please, pretty please, tell me you watch White Collar. I can't believe I like BN, but it was my fave (since Monk ended) till I saw White Collar.
