  1. I forgot to add that we used Irasshai DVD http://www.gpb.org/irasshai# and their materials from Book Surge. Also using the stickers from Japanese in 10 minutes a day, helped with vocabulary. I have tried Rosetta Stone, but kept "zoning out", something about interacting with the video screen does that to me. Classroom interaction was better for me and of course my summer immersion was the best way for me to learn.
  2. While my mom didn't teach us, I was told when I did take classes (years ago) that my pronunciation was quite good. I was able to teach my son up to a point. He, we are enrolled at the local community college. He will get dual credit for High School and College. Our need to speak it regularly will, I hope, be because of this class. It would be beneficial if I was around native speakers on a regular basis and speaking to them in Japanese.
  3. It's pricey, but thought if I had a group then we could absorb the cost together. It reminds me of the books that taught you the states and their capitals and the names fo the presidents. As it also looks like it's geared for younger students, I was thinking of adding some extra assignments for older ones.
  4. We will be finished with the 3 books in this series, Barthlomew's Passage, Jotham's Journey and Tabitha's Travel (we will be doing Amnon's Adventure (?) for Easter). Is there another series or something similar that we can do for next Christmas? We have enjoyed the daily readings and would like to continue this tradition. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
  5. Here's the website http://www.gpb.org/irasshai. You can purchase the books at Booksurge http://www.booksurge.com/search.htm?keyword=Irasshai Also, our local community college uses Genki I textbooks. Here's the info from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/GENKI-Integrated-Elementary-Japanese-Edition/dp/4789014401/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346242847&sr=8-1&keywords=Genki+I We may be going this route next year and thus DS will be getting dual credit. My suggestion is if you are going to do dual credit, it might be worth it to familarize yourself with the textbooks the college/university uses (of course the school could change what they use) and possible test out of a semester or two. I think I might have tested out of 1st year Japanese if I had done this. As it was, I tested out of the 1st semester of 1st year and may be enrolling in 2nd semester of 1st year in January. This might help DS when he enrolls next Fall. As with any language, practice speaking is essential.
  6. United States History by Timothy Keesee, Mark Sidwell and US History for Christian Schools, the 2nd edition is written by Timothy Keesee and Mark Sidwell too. Anyone know what the differences are and/or how would I find this out?
  7. and #2 I recognize it and celebrate that fact when I do say, "NO"! Sometimes when I am out shopping (food, clothing or ...) and I come across a "good" deal. I ask myself do I really need it OR can someone else be blessed by my not buying it so they can buy it! Seriously, this really works for me. It also helps to have someone that you are accountable to. The one thing that is almost as embarassing as standing "naked" in public is baring your finances to someone other than your spouse. Now that's naked but of another kind! But it helps you not hide things and it also helps you get to the emotional (usually hidden) reason why it's hard to say "no". I have put a shredder and recycle container at our front door, to shred junk mail and to dump catalogs and other such nonsense. This helps cut down the 'cravings'. There have been days when there's no real mail, just all junk! Hope this helps.
  8. kids can participate in. Everyone would be learning the same thing with daily assignments as well as Parent Take Home pages that could also be used for the little one.
  9. that I'd need in the future. If you had to spend the money now, definitely purchase quality art supplies that will last and yes books or ebook reader or iPad. We still have bees wax crayons from K and DS is in 8th grade.
  10. I read this in a day and was so moved by the story that I will be adding it to my collection. DS is soon to read it after he gets finished with another book. Here's info on it from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Long-Walk-Water-Based-Story/dp/0547577311/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339193862&sr=8-1
  11. especially tapioca pudding. Something about those bits rolling around in my mouth makes me ill!
  12. :iagree: I would also ask yourself, what kind of support are you thinking that you will get if you lived close to your parents vs your in-laws? Current debt and another child on the way, I would think about lowing the cost of living would also be a huge factor. Much of my support has come from dear friends because family was out of state and it's all been good! I haven't lived in Indy in a long while, but it's growing and it's big enough that it offers a variety of entertainment, cultural and educational activities.
  13. She was a "give back" dog that the breeder didn't want to keep because the previous owner had had her "fixed". We contacted another breeder and got advice on obedience classes. If you haven't tried this already, this might be worth something to look into. Hm, they might even be able to give you some tips. I was told the key to training is for the trainer to be consistent, reward heavily at first and then taper gradually plus train frequently. Labradoodles are smart dogs! 4 weeks is a short time and may put stress on your child, you and the dog! Can you give it a pass this year and try next year? I suppose you could ask to sit in on a class with or without your dog to guage the tone of the trainer and the other dogs and their owners.
  14. It's a diagramming app and I think it's free right now. It was a few days ago. It's still in it's early stages, but there are a few sentences available. Perhaps if we all email the developer(s) they may put up more sentences or create other useful possibilities
  15. pick out. But when the sentences are longer, it seems more of a challenge....at least to me it does.
  16. I understand that Transitive verbs needs a direct object and that Intransitive Complete verbs can stand alone and has a helping verb also, but is there another way to discern the differences. Does removing the Prepositional Phrase(s) help in anyway?
  17. behaviors? Could it be that he likes hearing the sounds of voices interacting with the television? I come from a family that "communicates" with the TV even on commercials! At times, it's strange not hearing other voices giving feedback. I enjoy going to movies where the audiences respond verbally to what's happening onscreen.
  18. in the late 60's and 70's. I was looking forward to doing this too, but they stopped teaching it. I am now learning it and teaching it to my son.
  19. I bought the smaller set and added on to it for DS birthdays and Christmas. Recently, I found the Snap Circuit Green kits, which is now under the Christmas tree. I would love to buy the I know Radio Shack usually carries a few sets. Amazon seems to have the best price.
  20. We used to do Silk Soy, but they changed their recipe and it now has almond in it and DS can't have Tree Nuts. We buy the generic Soy milk and always read the ingredients in case they change their formula.
  21. :iagree: We've had to do this and the boy either played at our house or in good weather, played outside. You are not being mean by telling her the truth which she probably already knows or has heard it before.
  22. Ack, hours! I would have to take someone in with me to go shopping especially for jeans!:001_smile:
