Pretty in Pink
I called the gas company out this morning because there has been a very 'off' odor in the kitchen. It didn't really smell like natural gas, but I couldn't think of what else it could be. Turns out the plumbing in this house is improperly vented. There is a vent under the kitchen sink which is venting sewer (methane) gas into our kitchen. Seriously. On top of that, while in the basement checking for natural gas leaks (there are none) the gas guy discovered a huge amount of carbon monoxide. Apparently the hot water heater is venting CO directly into the basement. He shut it down. So now I have no hot water, a basement full of CO, and a kitchen with a methane leak. No wonder we've all been having headaches and puking off and on since we moved in. Thanks for listening.

Random
Wow! I'm glad you found out and that you are all safe. What a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE thing! I'm so glad you called. This is OT, but I hope your pregnancy is going well. Even though I don't know you, I'm praying for you.
Mary in VA
Is the landlord going to act on this quickly, I hope? Mary
Tammyla
:grouphug:That's horrible, I hope it gets fixed immediately.
gingersmom
Make sure you have smoke detecters and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. I would try to break the lease and move ASAP.
Liz CA
I hope there is a discount in the rent. I will be soon a renter as we are moving due to a job transfer. This kind of stuff is not something I am looking forward to.
Jean in Newcastle
That is scary! I would call your Dr. and let him know. They may need you to come in (I'm thinking about the CO levels here).
elegantlion
:grouphug: I'm sorry. I think I'd be asking to be put up in hotel until he has it fixed.
joannqn
I think having no hot water and a life threatening gas leak would make this one of those immediate-fix issues in renter's rights stuff. I'd look it up, especially if the land lord gives your grief or doesn't want to fix it NOW. Definitely call your doctor about the findings and see if there's any concern. Carol in Cal.
In CA, this would be a habitability issue and the landlord would have to fix it immediately. No rent would be due during the period before it was fixed. Not sure whether motel costs would be the landlord's responsibility as well, but that is worth checking. No heat/no hot water is actionable here.
