FWIW, there are WAY more conservative people than I in my circle of acquaintance who loved it as well. I had to come into his room and night and take the book away so that he would go to sleep. I haven't read it yet, but I'm planning to, just to why he likes it so much. It played an influential part in the name he chose for our homeschool and the name I call him, Dragon Rider. As a matter of fact when I saw the name of this thread my first thought was "What does she want with my son? Maybe to congratulate him on his Life Scout rank?" (Silly me!!) It is a fun book. Not my favorite Cornelia Funke book, but worth a read. I didn't find anything objectionable about it. I don't think she puts forward any odd religious ideas or anything like that. We just finished Dragonrider as a read aloud tonight actually! I'm excited to share some of her works that I like even more with my kids. She says that the day we went and met Cornelia Funke was one of the best days of her life. ;) I didn't really care for The Thief Lord, but I love her other books.
