SoCal Sandra
Dss will be in fourth grade. What resources do you recommend? Both textbook and otherwise. Both Christian and secular. I want to explore all the options. I want to make the study interesting. TIA.
Ellie
His California Story, by Lesha Myers. Lesha was hsing her own dc and was a support group leader; the dc in her group were guinea pigs for all the activities. ;-) I was one of the people she asked to proofread for her, and I was so enthralled with the content it was hard to pay attention to the details, lol. jonnia
Gallopade has a big selection of state-related products. Here is a link to their California pages. There are 3 pages of items here, with more of the history resources on the 2nd page. Be sure not to miss seeing them. http://www.gallopade.com/showproducts.cfm?Step=1&FullCat=

sassenach
A few years ago, I came across a great resource at a free homeschool garage "sale". A mom of 8 had graduated her last kid and her family wanted to turn her hs room into a game room. Rather than sell all of her resources, she called the local hs group and had a giveaway bonanza. Her stuff took up an entire garage and driveway. It was amazing. Anyhow, one of the things I picked up is a teacher resource put out by the DOE. It's titled Teaching History-Social Science through Literature. anewday
There's also Beautiful Feet. Just be aware that BF takes about a year to go through unless your kiddo reads fast. :)
Carol in Cal.
Are you in the Silicon Valley area? You can look at mine if you want. I might even sell it to you--I don't know why I have kept it all these years. PM me if interested. I got a lot of great living books about CA history at the gift store at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento. I suspect that that site might end up on the park closure list as they were threatened last year and they are very labor intensive, so if you might want to check them out, I would do it quickly. Some other great field trips for CA history and geography included Columbia, for the later gold rush period, and also the Columbia Diggings in May for the earliest gold rush period. Also the Point Reyes park has great field trips about local native American life, as well as a fantastic but scarey earthquake walk covering the 1906 earthquake. The La Brea Tar Pits are well worth a visit for the prehistoric period.
tricia
Beautiful Feet books has a great study guide. On their website you will find the titles for their study of California.
Sparkle
When I've done California history, I mainly used a lot of living books. We read some about Father Serra and the missions, some about the gold rush, some about immigrants - Chinese, Mexican etc. We also read about the railroad, the Japanese internment camps, the Donner party, the San Francisco fire, and a couple of biographies of modern Californians, like Walt Disney. momto2Cs
Beautiful Feet books has a great study guide. On their website you will find the titles for their study of California. Is it secular or not? I'm looking ahead and am curious about this one from BF.
Sparkle
Is it secular or not? I'm looking ahead and am curious about this one from BF. No, it's not secular. It presents history from a providential viewpoint. ETA: I'm not tricia, but I owned this at one time.

NorCalMom
One of my favorites has already been mentioned: His California Story. We also enjoyed Our Golden California by Juanita Houston.
fourcatmom
Our Golden California has my vote! I haven't used or seen the others mentioned though. I would second Sutter's Fort and Old Town and also if you are near Northern California the Maidu Community Center is great with activities and a tour. kangato3
We used Our Golden California along with historical fiction. I also used the teacher resource book for His California Story for project ideas and instructions.
