  1. Our postwoman will bring packages to the door unless the dogs are in the yard then she leaves a notice in the box. This is kind of annoying since the garage man door is outside the yard and has a doorbell.:glare: If we are not home she will leave it on the doorstep.
  2. It really just depends on how they feel and their energy level. My DS becomes difficult to deal with if he's not feeling well. It's just not worth it to try to do school with him. My DDs on the other hand will muster through and I know if they becomes difficult that they really feel bad. Runny noses or a little cough but otherwise feeling well and school happens.
  3. A quesadia (sp?) maker. One of those sandwich press things. A food processor. A waffle maker (we just prefer pancakes). Thats all i can think of at the moment but I am sure there are others.
  4. I have no problem with large age gaps because you just never know who you're gonna find kizmet with. I do however tend to look fairly critically at the relationship if the girl is 18-22 ish because I knew man who in his 40's and 50's seemed to prey on young women in need of father figures. He used that need to manipulate them. So when I see relationships like this I tend to question motives. But if the girl has no such need and the relationship is genuine then so what as long as they are happy. It's not something I would seek out for various reasons, but it's hard to predict where we will find love.
  5. Never have never will. I do still see them at our homeschool fair, but they seem to be dress of a particular type of homeschooler. I'm short and stocky and whenever i think of myself in one the image of Pooh Bear wearing it comes to mind.
  6. I agree with Ria about not trying to teach both name and sound at the same time it can be confusing. If he already knows the letters by name then I would reccamend Leap Frog's Letter Factory DVD. I resisted purchasing it when I first saw it recamended on this board but when DS couldn't remember the sounds from one day to the next I finally gave in. After watching it once a day for a week and a half he knew all 26 basic sounds (consonants and short vowels) backwards and forwards. Also he is still very young and just may need more time. I firmly believe that developmental readiness plays as much a part in learning as teaching does and kids develop each at their own pace. It may just be that his little brain isn't ready yet. Take it slow, play games, and have fun. If he's getting stressed take a break from it and try again in a month or so.
  7. We don't even try to bathe our cats anymore. The last time we bathed the male he promtly marched into the living room and peed right in the middle of the floor. :001_huh: Hope the lip is better soon.
  8. It is definitely worth spending the extra money on Prismacolor and the Prang Professionals aren't to bad either. My kids never liked using colored pencils until we invested in the better quality ones. Prismacolor markers are very nice too. My oldest is an artist and I just about had heart attack when I saw the price of the set of markers she wanted for Christmas. Copic, even nicer than the Prismacolors, but you definitely pay for the quality. We paid $160 for a 36 peice set:ohmy:, but as a serious she takes very good care of her materials so we see it as an investment in her future.
  9. Three (15G, 11G, and 9B) and there won't be anymore. I'm a little sad that my baby turned 9 earlier this month, but I don't really want more. I just wish the ones I have wouldn't grow up so fast.
  10. :iagree: Ugh! I so did not get this book. I kept reading it thinking at some point a plot would develop, a reason for the story, but it never did.
  11. 1. Are your ear lobes free or fused?:bigear: fused 2. Do you have dimples or not? no 3. Do you have a crease in your chin or not? no 4. Can you fold the tip of your tongue backward?:tongue_smilie: no 5. Can you roll your tongue from the sides into a roll? yes
  12. :iagree: We had 2 pups from the same litter and it was a disaster.
  13. We have both, but the only reason we keep the landline is DSL. We have to pay for the phoneline whether we use it or not in order to have DSL.
  14. You have gotten may great ideas but I just wanted to second the yard care. When my grandfather was nearing the end it was November and snowing almost every day. A neighbor came over every morning and made sure the walkways were shoveled and ice free. He never said a word, but just came, did his thing and left. It was such a small thing, but a huge to blessing to us.
  15. Today it got into the low 30's and it feels great after 2wks of below zero temperatures. I could do without the snow though.
  16. We also have LG Tromm and couldn't be happier. According to the salesman the Whirlpool Duets are actually made by LG, but the LG's had features that made them more durable machines in the long run. If I could remember what they were now I'd tell you. LOL:lol:
  17. I was a self taught reader and I don't really remember when I began reading, as far as I know I was always able to read. I had three older brothers (7, 5 and 4 yrs older) and parents who were very active in reading to us and making sure we learned to read well. I think I just picked it up from being read to and being in the room when my brothers were learning and practicing. I wouldn't call any of my kids self taught and only one was reading early, but none of them required much instruction to get them reading.
  18. The younger two and I still have read alouds at lunch (usually a lit selection that connects with our history or science), CHOW and often our science text. Plus we still do a family read aloud at bedtime (I think DH is more attatched to this than the kids). My younger two (11 and 9) still look forward to these parts of our day so we continue.
  19. We pay $20 a week for 1/2 hour private lessons. This seems to be the going rate around here.
  20. Yeah there are, I just double checked on mine. If you go into settings and then choose general, you will see restrictions in the menu. From there you can turn off music rated explicit, Safari, YouTube, connecting to iTunes directly through the iPod, and installing apps. Once you enable one or more of the restrictions it will ask you to choose a password.
  21. If this a concern the iPod touch does have password protected parental controls that allow you to decide whether or not you want them to have wifi access and also allows you set max. volume. Other than that i think it's a decision you and your DH need to make based on your values. Our DC all have ipods of one kind or another but rarely use them in the presence of other people and know when it is or is not appropriate to use them.
  22. My brother asked this year if we would mind not exchanging gifts among the adults in the future and I have to say it was a huge relief to me. There is just nothing we can afford to get him and his wife that he can't go get for himself if he wants or needs it. Shopping for them is just stressful to me. Trying to find something they will use and enjoy, and the money factor just take the enjoyment out of it for me. It also means I will be able to spend just a little more for my niece and nephews who I do enjoy choosing gifts for.
  23. Laura, I had looked at this and was wondering if there were many differences, other than some spelling, between US written English and UK's written English rules (you have to excuse my ignorance here)? Another words would a US student have trouble later after having used this?
  24. My older DD takes honors English and younger DD takes writing classes both through Home2Teach online. Younger DD also takes private guitar lessons and older DD takes Japanese at the local community college.
  25. I second the recomendation for Adventures and would add Fizz, Bubble, and Flash for info and experiments focusing on the periodic table.
