  1. Totally diggin the "orientation day" idea that was posted. Thanks!
  2. I'm filing different subjects in different manners. For reading only in SL, I did 1 bookmark a week. I basically did a quick copy of SL's schedule onto a bookmark with check boxes for each day. My kids are rarely to never behind on the SL reader portion. If anything, they want to skip ahead and finish early so I don't anticipated a "getting behind" issue. Once the week is over, they will put the bookmark in a zippered pencil pouch inside their LA binder. But my daughter's science - that is done by a time limit. I made a "fill in what you did today" type of sheet for Math & The Cosmos. Each sheet has room for the week's assignments that she completes. I expect her to file that sheet along with her work in her science binder. There is one of these blank assignment sheets (Math & Cosmos is written at the top) in each of the 36 weekly folders. I'll likely do something very similar for my son's Miquon. I have not figured out how I'm going to file the Read-Alound and History portions. Those we do tend to get behind in from time to time so I'll have to make sure my system for that subject has flexibility. I'll post when I figure out that part :tongue_smilie:
  3. I made 36 bookmarks by cutting cardstock. I have a surplus of cardstock or I would use cereal boxes or something else. I jotted down the reading assignments for the week on each bookmark. And then filed the bookmarks by week. I also filed the actual books by the week they are supposed to start.
  4. We are secular homeschoolers. While my husband is Christian, I am not. And even we have more than 10 ;)
  5. For the younger set, you might could just do story starters and they share their stories. Dollar Tree has story starter books for a buck each. The 1st/2nd graders that can't write much yet might could narrate to a 3rd or 4th grader who could write the stories for them. These are free and secular: http://www.sfreading.com/resources/ghb.html
  6. I would try Igniting Your Writing But for 1st/2nd, I'm at a bit of a loss. Stick with copywork for the writing part? Focus more on phonics/reading for them.
  7. Within days My big sign is waking up to a SCENTalicous world. I seriously can smell everything x100.
  8. one handed - left hand slightly crossed at 1 o clock in town driving or highway - 10 and 2
  9. If you know you want to use Sonlight in the future, then decide if you want to do Core 5. Some people do, some people add some of the books in with Core 7 and some people do it way later like 9th grade. If you don't want to do Core 5, then I would do Core 3 + advanced readers = 5th grade Core 4 = 6th grade Core 6 = 7th grade Core 7 = 8th grade That is what I am doing except we will be adding in some of the Core 5 readers with Core 7 next year. :001_smile:
  10. When you said video, it made me wonder about youtube so I went and took a look. There are quite a few videos about calligraphy on youtube. Might be of help if you need to see something in particular.
  11. http://www.dickblick.com/products/sheaffer-calligraphy-sets/ I got the mini set but it is currently out of stock :glare:
  12. Zaner-Bloser has some. I just ordered them: http://shop.zaner-bloser.com/p-71-bookhand-student-book.aspx http://shop.zaner-bloser.com/p-73-formal-chancery-student-book.aspx Teacher notes are free with purchase so make sure to add them. If you request a free catalog, you can see a sample inside. Looks step by step. I bought a calligraphy set from Dick Blick when I was ordering other art supplies. Let me see if I can find it.
  13. I'm keeping my eyes on this one: http://classicaleducationresources.com/main.sc I haven't used this but the sample looks interesting: http://www.thesimplehomeschool.com/science-courses/ms-physics We are going to use Math and the Cosmos this year: http://www.wildridge.com/mc_overview.html main website http://www.tip.duke.edu/independent_learning/science/math_cosmos.html Duke Tip has a much better sample and overview

  16. http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/02/20/our-goals-for-se7en-sonlight-years Wow, you are right. She is managing 5 levels. I'd be in the loony bin for sure :tongue_smilie: That is rather amazing to me!
  17. Couple of things you need to know so that you can tweak yours if need be: CLE is done four day a week I do not do the first book (mostly review) so I start with 402 for example The 17th "Just For Fun" lesson is tacked onto test day (or skipped) If you use the above bulleted list, you will have the perfect number of math days for a 36 week, 4 day a week CLE year. It takes exactly 4 weeks to do one whole book. Now to file: Rip out the quizzes and set them aside Remove the staples with a butter knife Take out the test and set it with the quizzes With the book lying open to the middle, remove the top 1/3 of the pages and use a paper cutter to separate the left half from the right. Stack the left on top of the right so the pages remain in order Take the next 1/3 and cut it. The left hand side stacks on top of the cut pile and the right goes on the bottom. Repeat with the final 1/3 Make the following copies which this exception (if the lesson begins on the right-hand side and only contains its lesson, it will not need to be copied) Copy the page where lesson 5 starts copy the page where lesson 9 starts copy the page where lesson 13 starts copy the page where you record your drill result onto colored paper [*]Refile the original pages back into the cut pages (I had to do this for me. You might not have to) and set the copies to the side [*]Separate the following lessons out (I stapled them together into mini-books): Lessons 1-4 (cross out anything that comes from lesson 5) Lessons 5-8 (place quiz 1 on the top, use your copied lesson 5, and cross out anything from lessons 4 & 9) Lessons 9-12 (file quiz 2 with lesson 10, use your copied lesson 9, and cross out anything from lessons 8 & 13) Lesson 13-end (file test at the end, use your copied lesson 13 and cross out anything from lesson 12) [*]Now take your speed drills and put one page with each bunch of lessons. Lessons 1-4 gets Speed drills 1-4 and so on. [*]The speed drill record sheet which is on colored paper goes into week 1. Because it is colored it will be easy to keep from getting filed with the rest of the papers at the end of the week. I will tell my son to turn it in with his test. There ya go! CLE filed :) And it takes longer to post this than to go through 1 book and have it filed
  18. Diaper Pin has tons of reviews :) http://www.diaperpin.com/diapers/diaperpages.asp
  19. I bought my crates at Walmart - one in each of the following colors Green Blue Red Pink Gray The red one is ever so slightly wider - just a bit too wide to actually hang the folder. It hooks on one side and just misses hooking on the other side. I was using hanging file folders from Staples. Those same folders fit in all the other crates. I have no idea if it was just my red crate or if it affects them all. Just a word of warning before you buy a red crate from Walmart ;)
  20. Baby number six was a copper IUD baby. Nothing was wrong with the IUD - it was in the perfect position when they removed it. I was 5 1/2 weeks pregnant at the time of removal.
  21. :iagree: I thought I was the only one who didn't see or hear anything! Seems like most people do one or the other and some do both  I wonder what that says about our learning style :tongue_smilie:
