  1. If I had any floor besides tile, I would get these: http://www.zoebonline.com/kidishes-kid-friendly-tempered-glass-duralex.html (corelle is tempered too though) For the super young kids, these: http://www.kinder-ville.com/ Because I have tile floors that eat anything remotely breakable, I went with these: http://www.preserveproducts.com/products/tableware.html Make sure to read our process and safe plastics These dishes are the only plastic that I have in my kitchen ;)
  2. Just thought I'd post to say that I've broken down and started my own crates. It is a doozy of a project but I'm looking forward to it. My kids are color-coded so I have 5 crates with the proper color coded hanging files folders & folders Tyler - All Blue Hayden - All Red Greyson - All Green Arwyn - Pink Crate, Purple Folders, Purple Hanging Folders Isaac - Grey Crate (didn't have yellow), Yellow Folders, Yellow Hanging Folders Wish me luck in getting 5 of these done before the beginning of school in September  Sure does look purty *snort*
  3. My 3 year old daughter said this when she was 2 1/2: "Mom, do we eat deer?" "Some do, we don't" *sobs* "Santa won't come if we eat his deers"
  4. If it continues, I would go see a doc. It could be something like sarcoidoisis.
  5. Walmart is a nutty place in general. Certainly, I see people there that I never notice anywhere else  I think this website clearly demonstrates what I'm tyring to say: http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/ click on photos (you might not want to open this if you have kids milling about or want to see some disturbing images - think spandex, shorts to short, and the just plain WEIRD! Some of the images might be offensive)
  6. Winterpromise has a whole science curriculum based around the Solar House Kit by Thames and Kosmos
  7. The noise drove me insane. To solve the problem, I bought a white styrofoam cooler. I notched the top of the cooler to snugly fit the cord. This allowed the top to fit firmly. I put the tumbler inside. Then I covered the cooler with towels. The noise was very muted and tolerable.
  8. "my heart is pumping peanut butter" - meaning they were not concerned about the situation "you'll argue with a fence post and when it won't argue back, you'll pull it up argue with the hole" - said when someone won't "drop it" "half again as big" - I don't think this one is odd as I grew up with it. My my husband is just perplexed by it. It means x + x/2. So any number plus its half "Good Lord have Mercy if that ain't something I'll hush my mouth" - by those southern women who are thunderstruck by an event "I'm scaring 40" - about to turn 40 years old Driving "like a bat out of hell"
  9. Not crackers in the truest sense but good! You put a thin layer of cheese on a plate and microwave it until it starts to "overcook". Use a towel to soak up any grease. Then you can break it apart into "crackers". Alternately, you can bend it into a taco shell ;)
  10. Before Grade 4, Weekly Reader publishes a workbook: Grade 1: Feel Great, Get Fit Grade 2: Be Happy, Fit, & Safe Grade 3: Take Care of Yourself
  11. Grades 4-7 Current Health 1 http://www.weeklyreader.com/archive/28 Grades 7-12 Current Health 2 http://www.weeklyreader.com/archive/36 Secular and Meets National Standards. My daughter who was in 6th last year received Current Health 1. She enjoyed it. There was no mention of sex or sexuality in the Magazine. For Current Health 2, there is a Human Sexuality Newsletter that you can add. I've been watching the samples for about a year and as of yet, I have not seen any sex or sexuality in Current Health 2 either. My best guess is that it is all contained within the Sexuality Newletter which is completely optional.
  12. ABC order spelling without having to write matching letters - youngers matching upper and lowercase These mats are neat http://prekinders.com/letter-tiles/ I like the tiles they show too but they are $$$: http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/seo/ca%7CsearchResults~~p%7C2534374302101637~~.jsp
  13. For clarification, I would not have been offended if it was an elderly person or someone who clearly didn't mean harm. But we are talking about a room of my peers - I'm 34. I refuse to believe that no one in that room knew it could be offensive. (about a dozen people 30s-40s who didn't bat an eye when the term was used)
  14. I'm white and married to a black man. We have 6 children. When we moved, I began the process of finding a new homeschool group. The first one we tried bombed and this is just one of the reasons why: The head of the group greeted me warmly. Then she took a long look at my kids. She looked back at me and said, "Oh wow. We have one other colored family that comes sometimes." I was so stunned that I couldn't even think to say anything. No one in the group even skipped a beat. I was just reeling. None of these women were even close to "old". I kind of expected someone to whisper "sorry about that" or email me after the meeting. Nada.... Not the group for us ;)
  15. I was extremely sick with my first five children. Could keep nothing down until 20-22 weeks with each one. My sixth... barely nauseous. He is cooing in front of me - almost 3 months old. I will say that I had my thyroid completely removed between my 5th and 6th and wondered if that had anything to do with the extreme difference.
  16. Another night bird here. I've tried for years to be a morning person. I did a bit better taking melatonin but then that stopped working. As for gardening, my time is late in the evening, right before it is dark. No hot sun beating down on you. It is warmer than the morning but as long as it isn't too hot, I'm fine as long as there is no direct sun. :001_smile:
  17. I'm a secular homeschooler. I find parts of them to be acceptable such as him going to church pn his birthday and hearing the sermon that he heard. Some is a "bit much" and I tend to edit that on the fly. Not hard to do really. I found a couple of the narration passages to be pulled from the more Biblical parts. So I just quickly skimmed and found an alternate passage. Again, super easy.
  18. This might fit your budget more and is very good: http://www.amazon.com/Discovering-Great-Artists-Hands-Children/dp/0935607099/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278630487&sr=8-1
  19. In case someone stumbles on this thread in the future. The answer is here: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189291
  20. Oh good, maybe you can help me :tongue_smilie: Is this a stand-alone curriculum or a supplement? Just trying to wrap my brain around it. I love the demo. Thanks!
  21. I'm intrigued by the Muggins Math Pre-Algebra but can't quite get a handle on it. Is this intended to be a supplement or a full curriculum? Any insight into the program is appreciated.
  22. Paths of Exploration Dancing Bears - Reading/Phonics Apples & Pears - Spelling Sonlight 2 Readers Singapore 2A + 2B Miquon PiAnimals Music Ace Song School Latin Tin Man Press stuff Logic Links and other Various Logic Games
  23. If he is accelerated, it would be in math/science. Not language for sure. He is absolutely average in that category ;) I started him in CLE 1st grade this year for Math. He took one look at it and said I know all this stuff. So we did just the tests, and yep he did know it all. I gave him a Singapore placement test and he easily tested into 2A/2B after having only done rudimentary K math + the tests in CLE. We are planning on doing Singapore this coming year. He can easily add stuff like 27 + 36 in his head. I gave him Miquon to work at his own pace for the rest of the year. All 6 books. He was excited to learn multiplication and understood more complicated fractions right away. He is working in the third book mostly.
