  1. So it sounds like you are saying that his attention is on the other kids and so is forgetting basic things. If there were no other kids there, would he be more focused and remember his coat/leaflet? The homework. Did he forget because he left it at home or did he lose it at school? Does he have a routine to put homework in his backpack (satchel) at night?
  2. How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman is a very good thorough cookbook. I've heard the Moosewood is good, but I've never seen it. I think the hardest thing about cooking Vegetarian is putting together a meal. Most people think - meat, starch and vegetable. When you skip the meat, you still want something to stand in its place. Bittman has several menus, so that can be helpful to some people.
  3. Have you had her eyes tested? Sensitivity to light, eye strain and other eye issues can cause headaches. Your DD sounds more like migraines, but it is always good to remove all possible causes.
  4. I would just pick a few general requirements like number of bedrooms and number of bathrooms. Then look at a variety of houses, locations, prices. I've often heard that you'll know the house when you find it. It might not quite fit your requirements, but has 'something' about it. If you have one requirement that is more difficult to find, then you might consider using that one. We wanted a larger lot and that was rather difficult since so many lots are 1/8 of an acre.
  5. http://www.ascscientific.com/lens.html Hand Lens is good, but they are a little expensive.
  6. Our tree has a little bit of a theme - red. In that there are lots of red ornaments, but other colors too. I think I'll do a themed festivus pole (Seinfeld reference) this year. Usually it is just plain silver.
  7. I think 5'6" is average for women in the US. So 5'2" is about 4 inches shorter than average. I was once in an elevator with two women I know who were both under 5". I looked at them and said 'for once in my life I feel tall'. I don't think they appreciated it.
  8. Ordinary skirts looks like maxi skirts. Often you can't shorten them, because of kick pleats, etc. Short people got nobody.
  9. I'm 5'2" and I've always been jealous of my taller sister's PJs. Now I have a couple of pairs of pj by Vera Wang sold at Kohl's because for some reason they are prefect for me. I don't know if they are meant to be capri length or what, but I love them. They are not the fleece style.
  10. You might try the Special Needs board. My DD sat on one of those at a Physical therapist - I don't know the brand. She loved it.
  11. I refuse to go shopping on Thanksgiving or ultra-early Thanksgiving morning. I don't want to encourage stores to open early. My sister works at a hospital lab, so some years she has to work.
  12. When I was a kid we always wanted to have a midnight feast. We had read about it in a book. It involved candy and other treats. I think it took us a long time to be able to secretly stay up till midnight.
  13. Wealthy in love, understanding, books, education and laughter. Middle class in everything else.
  14. I'd say Vaseline, just because we always have it. Can you wear a face mask type hat (balaclava)?
  15. Is your father or your sister's father involved in her life (in a positive way)? I've heard that girls who's father is not involved are more likely to be involved in abusive relationships. I remember someone saying when judging a guy, pay no attention to what he says. Pay attention to what he does. I hope you can keep sending her the message that you are there for her and she deserves better.
  16. Other - it must be clean when we have someone visiting. We don't have people over that often. We try to make it easy, but we don't get hung up on it. I think part of most kids problems is too much stuff for the space they have. I wouldn't describe it as a pig sty. Mainly it is stuffed animals and books everywhere. We have rules about no food in the bedroom.
  17. I would brainstorm with her all the service projects that she would feel comfortable doing and that could meet the requirements of # of hours and that would make a good paper. Then I suggest that she pick the one that seemed closest to the requirements of the class. Then it would be up to her to talk to the teacher to find out if it would be okay. I would think that somewhere there is a project that would satisfy both the teacher and your DD. I would look into Church Soup Kitchens or Church Food Pantries.
  18. I've had it happen. It was a very nice college student. He was just a big guy and stuck in the middle seat. Luckily it was a short flight so we weren't uncomfortable for that long. Why can't they make some seats bigger?
  19. Yes I think that is the same book. I liked that it told me what type of needles (and other items) were best for a beginner.
  20. All I know is that while a relationship is "on-line" it is full of fantasy. Once they meet in person, reality can set in and things can change. So from that point of view, I would try to get them together in safe way. I don't know much about depression, cutting etc.
  21. Early this year when my DD wanted to learn about sewing and crafts, we checked out a great book from the library about sewing. The first project was a 'book' for your needles. You had to sew on a button. The second was making a simple pin cushion. It had great instruction about "how to" do simple things like the button, types of stitches, etc. Each project was a little more difficult, but something a 7 to 9 year old could handle (with help at times from a grown up). I wish I had kept the name of the book. We've not tried a spool knitter. She does regular knitting.
  22. I got in the habit of this when my DD was a baby and I didn't want the extra noise. It can be funny to do it a show like Jimmy Kimmel or Jimmy Fallon (I watch on Hulu), because with dialog they must do it in a hurry and I've seen some funny mistakes. Kimmel has a Aunt Chippy, who was identified as a Chip Pea.
