  1. Aw, man. It's not showing on any of my stations. What channel are you watching?
  2. My DS has a helmet and he wears it on organized rides. He does not wear it when it's just us riding around. We live in a rural/urban (read small city with corn growing in every available nook and cranny) area. Within 10 mins of riding we are on country roads. Most of the bike riders in our do not wear helmets. The ones who do wear them are usually adults.
  3. Do you ever want to throw caution to the wind and just have fun? Let tomorrow take care of itself and enjoy today for today. Do you ever get tired of weighing the consequences and thinking about the future? I have a person in my life who bought a brand new car three days before she quit her job, took a trip to Mexico the same month, parties when she wants to, is always on the go and appears to be very happy and satisfied. She will tell me that she is, too. I want to be free like that!
  4. Thank goodness for grants! Can you imagine trying to do this on your own? :grouphug:
  5. You can come but I don't think the Southwest Chief runs through DC. Anyway - I don't know if the car has lighted mirrors to aid in proper lipstick application. Can't go into those rest stop bathrooms unless we look our best!
  6. She would rather die! (How's that for being a drama queen?) We offered to buy her a new, lime green bike but she didn't go for it. I am not kidding when I say that there are so few teenagers who ride bikes here they dismantled most of the bike racks at the high school. I think they left one by the pool area. Her buddy picked her up this morning but I don't know how long she can bum rides.
  7. Shame on you for asking this question. Shame, shame, shame. I want a baby around this time every year. Maybe it's the transition from school to summer and the upcoming excitement of new adventures. I was doing pretty well this year being happy with two teenagers and looking forward to college visits and ACT prep. I guess now I have to say YES! But it won't be happening.
  8. Okay, now ya'll are spending money I don't have. If I had the kind of money to do all of that we could buy a beater car here and just drive that. I guess that's why we have to wait until mid-July to try to go and get it.
  9. Reading about your experiences is eye opening. I cannot imagine taking public transportation with little children. Okay, that's not true. I enjoyed riding the T in Boston and if we had something like that I could do it. For us the big problem is having three people with different work schedules. If it were just DH and me we could manage but when DD is thrown in the mix it complicates things. Since DH and I required her to work this summer we feel responsible for making sure she has transportation to work. We are trying it this week and we'll see how it goes. My biggest fear at the moment is that it will be raining, I will take the vehicle to work and DH will get called to go to work or need to be picked up. Mountains out of molehills, right?
  10. I'm not sure I would like being paid that way. My DD's paychecks are direct deposited into a checking account.
  11. :iagree: and :grouphug: That kind of stuff can make for a long day at the office.
  12. Good advice. I will talk with my mom and find out more about the car this evening. I am grateful beyond measure.
  13. My mom's stepmom gave her a car a few years ago and it has been sitting in the garage. They offered it to DH and me! It's 12 years old with 80,000 miles but it's free. Well, kinda, I gotta go get it...from Colorado. DH and I think that if DD and I take Amtrak to CO we can drive the car back and be gone two days. The cost of tickets and gas will be doable in about a month. I won't get to spend any time at home because of my work schedule so it won't be any fun. Just a super quick trip there and back.
  14. That is amazing. We have a public bus system but not one that runs near DH's work nor at the hours DH would need to get to work. He is due to go to work at three am tomorrow so I guess it will be a middle of the night trip for me, too.
  15. As an adult yes, it is. My teenaged DD on the other hand cares deeply about what others think. Part of me feels for her and wishes we could give her everything her friends have but we can't, not without taking on debt and we are not willing to do that.
  16. The excitement of Friday night has left us with only one vehicle. DD got caught in a flash flood and the car was stuck in a foot of water; not for a long time but long enough to do some damage. After the car was drained, we replaced the starter (which short circuited) hoping that was the only problem. It's not. The repair bills are more than the car is worth. DH and I are learning our lessons. We had purchased liability insurance on the car so we get absolutely nothing from the insurance co. Saving on the monthly payment by choosing the cheaper insurance is coming back to haunt us now. We could have used some insurance money to help purchase another car. I am beginning to think trying to remain debt free is not worth it. I want to go buy a car, today, right now, this moment. It is going to take us awhile to save for a car and with three of us working and DH's schedule being erratic it is not going to be fun. Hey - at least I enjoy riding my bike!!:D If it's not raining.:glare:
  17. I do, but she's not homeschooled. Can I be included anyway?
  18. I remember vividly your post about KISS. Welcome!
  19. If we all move in with you ...well.... um....doesn't that ruin the idea of being a hermit? Wouldn't that be a commune? ;)
  20. DD has super fine, blond hair so her leg hair wasn't a problem until 7th grade. She became a cheerleader and all of other girls were shaving so she wanted to shave, too. I gave in and she has been shaving ever since.
