What is/was your Kindergartner doing?
Tumbatoo replied to kaitneel's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
We didn't do a lot for K. DD finished up Sonlight core A, and started B. She did Singapore 2A and B. We started AAR 2, but ended up doing our own thing. And, that's pretty much it! -
That's a good idea! No, I haven't been trying to do something with them all. We don't usually work together since there are so many different levels, but I could make it more obvious that everyone has something to do. My older kids have instruments to practice.

She's gone for 7 hours a day. We live close to the school.

Yeah, I'm working on the attitude. I wish I could tell the teacher we will do our own math homework! They grade homework starting in second. She had to do a page of subtraction last week. She was doing fraction conversions before we decided to try public school for the structure - whole other topic and I'm still on the fence about whether it's best. She just took the MAP at school so Hopeful we'll get the results soon and it can support my cause!

I guessed I could have put more info: she is new to public school. She was working about a 4th/5th grade level at home. I just don't want her to regress since she likes math. I haven't looked at Redbird. I'll check it out, thanks!

I want to after school my 8 yr old in math. She's pretty advanced in math but the school is keeping her at a second grade level. The problem is she is too tired and completely done by the time she gets home from school. So, I'm trying to do some enrichment on Saturdays and school off days like today. I homeschool my other kids so this isn't a big deal. She just really is opposed to this idea and thinks she shouldn't have to do anything if school isn't in session.

Beginning blending Cvc words- what to use after AAR pre?
Tumbatoo replied to Hilltopmom's topic in PreK and K
What about Reading the Alphabet? It touches on letter sounds, but mostly focuses on phonetical awareness, sight words and other pre-reading skills. It's free online at thisreadingmama.com. -
Planning for 2018-2019 ;)
Tumbatoo replied to teachermom2834's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I enjoy the planning phase too! In some ways I like it better than the execution because there are less variables. I have one going to public school in Jan, one possibly going to high school next fall and two more that want to homeschool. So, this year I just don't even know which way to turn. Not quit as fun! Lol, -
What are you doing for middle school (7th &8th grade) history?
Tumbatoo replied to wehave8's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We used Sonlight through core F (6th grade), and then switched to VP Omnibus for 7th. I'm planning to do a mix of Omnibus and Georgia studies for 8th since d wants to go to public high school. -
I'm meeting the principal Monday to discuss possibly enrolling my 7 year old. Help me brainstorm questions to ask please! I know she was miss out on her homeschool violin class, but she can take private lessons. I don't know if they will grade skip her. I feel like she should be. She's 7, and second grade, but I'd on about 4th grade level, but also on the spectrum I think. I'm going to ask about whether I need private testing, or if they will take it What else? The principal has already mentioned spending time with kids her own age like it's a pro, and opportunities that homeschool kids don't have. Not sure I agree, but okay Dd needs the structure that I can't give with three other kids, and she is a rule follower, so that leads to fights at home. She's been having a very rough time lately. I just don't know what to do! My oldest is planning to go to high school next year.

What does your accelerated preK day look like?
Tumbatoo replied to Mommyof1's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
I have a almost 4 year old. He always gets up asking for TV, so I have him do a little "school" work first. He reads to me, does some math (Singapore Essentials K), and I read to him. We're working our way slowly through Sonlight P4/5. Sometimes he practices writing a letter if he wants or some mazes. He really loves mazes! That's pretty much it. He plays with his older siblings and will paint when they do art, join them with legos, etc. He is very "on" all the time and it's always doing something. If I didn't have older kids, we'd spend a lot of time at museums, playgrounds, libraries, exploring the woods and things like that. I feel bad that it takes so much out of our day to get the older kids (7, 10 and 13) school completed. -
Already dropping history and science...
Tumbatoo replied to luvbug in Ohio's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It's already been mentioned, but I'd go with interest led. If he's into pirates, learn about that: dress up, books from library, maps, hunt for treasure, learn about boat navigation, etc Same for lights/castles, ancient Egypt, ect. You can make it a unit study and add in science, or explore interest led science: how do you make bubbles? Slime? Baking soda volcanos, watch Wildkratts, visit the zoo, etc. -
Homeschool Respite business?
Tumbatoo replied to robsiew's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think it's a great idea! I've often wished for something like that :) -
They said what? Good thing they're homeschooled!

3 year old, while reading (Are You My Mother) "That baby bird just hopped on an excavator!" -
"I want to do more math, Mom."
Tumbatoo replied to eternallytired's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Multiple curricula is what saved my sanity. We have 3-4 going currently. Sometimes just popping over to one got a few weeks will reset whatever problem has occurred in the other while simultaneously not getting in too far. My 7 year old has started getting specific. She wants to learn decimals lol! -
Moral? objection to Singapore math?
Tumbatoo replied to Xahm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
But I do remember then having ETC. That's common core, right? -
Moral? objection to Singapore math?
Tumbatoo replied to Xahm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Was it in Alpharetta, GA by chance? A store there told me they didn't carry Singapore and I got the same impression! It was so unexpected that I researched, but found nothing. Weird -
He just flunked algebra 1 chapter one test
Tumbatoo replied to Janeway's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Khan Academy really helped ds (also doing Algebra 1). He gets frustrated when his progress bar didn't move it goes backwards, so he's motivated more that me just helping him correct. He actually doesn't get to move on. He is using the answer bar to work- adding and deleting steps. He hates showing his work on paper and tries to do it all mentally. He finally got equation building working on Khan Academy. Go figure! I'm putting aside the Jacob's for now and going with it -
I have a tentative plan. DS is my oldest and he in 8th technically. So far, we did Sonlight science for 5th and 6th. CK-12 Life Science for 7th 8th - Novare Accelerated Physics and Chemistry through Wilson Hill Academy I realize we jumped quite a bit in science. So far it's really been to easy for him. For high school: Option 1: continue with Wilson Hill Academy - they use Novare for Chemistry and Miller/Levine Biology if I remember Option 2: On our own. I've researched some curricula. We're not fans of Apologia either, so this is what I have so far: Biology - Shepherd Chemistry - Spectrum Physics - not sure AP Biology - Reece/Campbell Also, I really think I'm going to like Novare Science, so that is probably what we'll do if Wilson Hill Academy works out. For me second, we'll probably use NOEO science 5th and 6th, then Shepherd Life Science for 7th.

Advice needed for PreK/K math - will use Singapore in 1st grade
Tumbatoo replied to CHSgirl's topic in PreK and K
I like Singapore Essentials before Primary math. It's not necessarily challenging, but it reinforces some concepts and introduces others. There are activities to do at the bottom of each page to make the concept concrete. It's been a great jumping off point. We are also using Kumon numbers to 30 to practice wiring numbers. -
Agreed. I don't know what you mean by "Miller"

i don't understand lapbooks
Tumbatoo replied to desertstrawberry5's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't get it either. It seems rather like busy work to me too. I'd rather the kids generate their own output - like their original artwork, Lego creation, pretend play, etc. Sometimes we just have a discussion, and that is fine too :)
