Anyone NOT regret homeschooling?
Tumbatoo replied to Mommamia's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I regret not pulling my oldest out of public school sooner. -
Which Pre-Algebra for this math-challenged kiddo?
Tumbatoo replied to diaperjoys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Possibly Math Mammoth 7? It has a good review in the first few chapters and plenty of practice with each section. -
I think we're pretty much set (3rd second grader): History/Geography: Sonlight C (world history part 2) Science: interest led - right now we're doing microbiology for as long as she wants, but I also have Sonlight science C and NOEO Biology 2 Math: finish Singapore 3, and move to 4 and BA 3 LA: Continue MCT Island Reading: Interest led Other: violin, American Heritage Girls, hopefully some art, interest led

Oh good! That's what I was thinking. Thanks :)

DS is using Latina Christiana 1 right now, but I'm thinking of switching to Wheelock's for next year. He'll be an 8th grader. Is that enough background for Wheelock's, or should we also do Latina Christiana 2?

Are there Sonlight'ers here?
Tumbatoo replied to athomeontheprairie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well, I pretty much have had the opposite experience! Lol I guess it goes to show how different everyone is. Disclaimer - have only used cores P4/5 - F My experience: - Excellent customer service - Very broad outlook on topics with many different viewpoints included. I've left out a couple over the years that I felt were too slanted by the author - Very good and broad overview of science, including both evolution and creation perspectives - excellent literature choices that allowed me to discuss indepth issues with my children - love the way they don't impose personal or denominational religious beliefs. - high resell value - even the older versions still sell well, which is handy if you want to buy next year's curriculum - best support group ever of homeschool moms on Facebook - IGs can be followed or tweaked very easily and are good for keeping on track when you have multiple kids - I actually think the LA is fine for the lower levels - No experience above F - BUT only if the child is on the same level reading and writing - Which mine are not. We still use the readers/lit, but add in MCT LA The one thing I wish they would do is lower the ages on cores. Sonlight is a full and challenging program. Most kids do better at what Sonlight recommends for the higher age range. -
Skipping first few chapters Jacob's algebra
Tumbatoo replied to Tumbatoo's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I think leaning more towards just going through the book now. He's going really slow on the problems. Maybe the extra review and method will help! -
2017--2018 --8th Grade Planning
Tumbatoo replied to Soror's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I *think* this is our plan: Jacob's Algebra Conceptual Integrated Science w/labs Georgia History/Gov using online book World Geography Wheelock's Latin Maybe Spanish too? Argument Builder MCT Voyage And, something for literature - his dad is working on that... -
I've been looking through the Jacob's algebra book and I feel like DS is solid on at least through chapter 8. I'm considering giving him the tests through Dr Callahan's book and skipping the chapters if he gets 100â„…. On the other hand, DH says the review is how the material sticks. Any thoughts on this? Math is not ds's favorite subject, but we have done a lot of prealgebra so far - about 2 years. He'll be 8th grade, so there is no rush really.

I never knew there was an alternative way. We just did then in otder.

They said what? Good thing they're homeschooled!

So, my 12 year old is learning cursive today so he can sign his name on his ACT application. 😂 -
How does this look for 7th and 8th grades?
Tumbatoo replied to diaperjoys's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
If you do the Primary and Secondary Omnibus: 5-7 hours of lecture a week primary plus 3-4 secondary, and at least 2-3 hours a day reading. So, 20+ hours per week not counting writing time, which is going to vary a lot. -
How does this look for 7th and 8th grades?
Tumbatoo replied to diaperjoys's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Just a note if you haven't had experience with Omnibus yet: it's VERY challenging. Omnibus 2 could easily be at least 10th grade. The are multiple essays per book and no writing or grammar instruction. Reading assignments are long (15 chapters of Isaiah for one day's reading for example). The lectures can also be long - some over an hour- and quizzes are challenging! I'm not trying to talk you out of it. My gifted 7th grader is doing Omnibus 1 this year. We love how in-depth it is. But, he has had to really step up his game this year. Just wanted to to be aware so it isn't a shock. We weren't quite prepared since Ds is academically advanced. But it's a definite leap from everything else we've done. -
Favorite Curriculums for Accelerated Learners
Tumbatoo replied to imagine.more's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
We are currently using and enjoying MCT LA (all my kids love it) and Beast Academy math. I also really like Singapore math leading up to and alongside BA. We use Prodigy occasionally as well. We're using Sonlight for my youngers for history and lit. It keeps us in books and also from going too fast. We tried Life of Fred, and while I liked the idea, it just wasn't enough and one hated the stories. I also tried and was not impressed with MBTP. My 5 yr old was doing 6-8, and the content still seemed easy and not very deep, but had lots of busy work. -
How long should mom's school day last?
Tumbatoo replied to vaquitita's topic in General Education Discussion Board
. This is pretty much what we do too! Mine are 12, 9, 7, and 3. I start with whichever one is up first and rotate through them with the kids getting alternating breaks and me getting none lol. I let the 3 yr old have TV time after he does some basic stuff. My 12 yr old is mostly independent so that helps. The other two can also take turns working with me and playing with the three year old. We don't combine any subjects. This allows each child to work at his/her own pace and we don't have to wait until everyone is ready/quiet. We work from about 9-3 including breaks, except my oldest usually takes until 5. -
Would you buy / be interested in...
Tumbatoo replied to abba12's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I also don't have that kind of printer. It's cheaper for me to buy the Kumon workbook. For print, I definitely look for black and white, but I prefer just to buy a printed book. -

So far.... VP Omnibus 2, primary and secondary Jacob's Algebra Conceptual Integrated Science Explorations w/lab Latin Christiana 2, then Wheelock's?? MCT Voyage Discovery of Deduction Trumpet Boy scouts -
I scored a brand new Campbell/Reece textbook and an art notebook at Goodwill! I'm excited about that, but need ideas on implementation. It's an AP level book, correct? Would a biology lab kit from Science Shepherd be useful? I'm at a bit of a loss on making my own schedule/labs/tests.

Sounds fun! But, for us, we'd spend about half the time or less on each subject. Last year DD was did kindy and math took about 15 min a day (even though she did grade 2 math), reading another 15, etc. I would aim for 1-1.5 hrs total for that age.

Anyone making changes for the second semester?
Tumbatoo replied to vaquitita's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I switched DS 12 from AoPS Pre-Algebra to Math Mammoth 7. He only had a little left in AoPS, but was having trouble recalling some of it. We're going to go to Dolciani Algebra (I think) next instead of AoPS. I'm also considering switching Dd 9 from BA as supplement with Singapore as main curriculum, to BA as primary. -
This helps a lot, thanks!
