  1. We are in (edited for privacy) and I know a wonderfully patient teacher too. She will go only as fast as the student and parent want her to go.
  2. My sixth grader is eleven and we can only go as fast we can go. For English we are doing Daily Grams, Druidawn, and writing essay from WriteSource. Mostly Daily Grams every day, Druidawn is once a week, and we get an essay done about once a week. For math we are doing VideoText Algebra at his speed. We were going pretty quickly until we hit this recent topic and we are going to be here for a little while. That is okay with me. For Japanese he is doing what his teacher assigns and I help when I can. For history we are using Beautiful Feet's California History. We are working on getting two lessons done per week and mostly we do, but I am not worried about keeping pace. We also are using another California history book because it has more pictures and some days that is important. We are usually getting two days a week of this. For science, he is doing Derek Owens Physical Science at his speed. A friend bought the course on thumbdrive and it is going okay. The plan for this was two days a week, that didn't happen. He is working on this about four days a week because he volume is too high for just two days. For art, we do one project a week, using the 13 Artists a Child Should Know series. It is usually a day that we are tired or grumpy and we are looking for school but calm. And finally, swimming... Four days of swim team and one day of lessons.
  3. We filed earlier this week. Archer Academy is a real school for another year! This year is the first where I have three ungraded secondary students. It is kind of weird.
  4. Have you tried Lang-8? It sounds like exactly what you are looking for. It only works for languages that are currently spoken by someone so no Latin. Website is http://lang-8.com/
  5. He had several blood tests and then an endoscopy. The blood tests said that celiac was possible. The endoscopy said that it was not likely. A negative result on an endoscopy is not guaranteed to be accurate because the biopsy could have just picked a spot that did not have damage. But a positive endoscopy means you definitely do have damage and that means you do have celiac disease.
  6. We did full iq and achievement tests plus some bonus tests that the tester thought would be important. It ruled out some problems and told us where to look for help in other ones. It was expensive and insurance did not pay, but totally worth it for us.
  7. Other than time, the testing that we did right as they each turned six. It told me things I needed to know and opened doors that I didn't even know existed. It also allowed me to relax about all things academic and focus on playing and experiencing life.
  8. I like ebooks even for textbooks because I can adjust the font size to be something comfortable to read. I do remember where things are on pages from back when I had hard copy books and I liked flipping through the books and finding interesting things. But the overwhelming need for me right now is font size. If I can have it in ebook I will. My Japanese textbooks are hard copy and the print, especially the kanji, is so small I am having real issues trying to even see what is on the page. I would be so grateful for an ebook copy that I could get the font size larger...
  9. No. All of the programs that I know would let him be on a public school team would require him to be a public school student. That would mean a-g requirements and any other hoops that the school requires. If you want to just be on a school swim team then I would suggest looking at local private schools. They can set their own rules and may not be as onerous.
  10. Magic school bus on dvd and as many of the books as possible Mark Kistler's Draw Squad books Some very easy recorder or piano books
  11. CA homeschoolers most likely did not take the test since homeschooling in California is technically creating a very small private school. Private schools are allowed to use whatever curriculum or no curriculum as they choose. I suppose it is possible that some did take the test, but I can't this of the circumstances it would happen.
  12. If you think your 3 year old would do the test then I would suggest her. The age range for the test tops out at 7 and you may not get as much information about your older child if she took it.
  13. I don't remember what my older kids used before we did videotext. We tried art of problem solving and that was a flop. I just asked my son, we think it might have been Horizons, but truly it was a long time ago. My younger one, the one currently doing it, used khan academy last year and right start before that. The older kids did Derek Owens geometry after videotext and then Derek Owens algebra 2 after that. My daughter is doing Derek Owens PreCalc and my son is doing trig at the community college right now.
  14. I have used it for both of my older kids. One is currently taking Trig at the community college and the other is doing PreCalc with Derek Owens. Neither was unprepared for Derek Owens Geometry after finishing with VideoText Algebra. I am currently using it with my sixth grader and it is working well. The good things for us: it says when to stop. I tend to like to teach more math than is reasonable in a lesson. Videotext makes me pause after a single lesson. It has enough but not too many problems. I assign the odds and then if there are issues then I assign the evens the next day. It was already on the shelf. I bought it for the older kids so we already had it. It is not discovery based. My kids like math and are good at it, but do not want to rediscover it all over again. AOPS did not work. It may have given a better understanding but only at the cost of many tears. It wasn't worth it to me. The cons: It is slow. Those bite sized lessons mean there are lots and lots of lessons to get through to cover Algebra. My kids didn't like the videos. I have been going over the lesson on the white board and then handing him the problem set. It works for us, The order of what is covered is not the usual one. Not a problem for us because we started early, but potentially an issue if you were entering another system. It was expensive. Averaged over three kids it isn't so bad, but for just one, it might not be so cost effective. I hope that helps.
  15. My kids aren't your kids. Just because a particular method or curriculum worked for you does not mean it will work for us.
  16. I would suggest they find out the rules for homeschooling in their state and then the specific rules (if any) for their state colleges, like the a-g requirements in California.
  17. I don't plan or schedule for my sixth grader. My older kids have all outside classes so I am not involved at that level. Math - textbook picked. Do the next thing English - grammar book picked. Do the next page. Write something. Read something. History - text picked. Do next lesson. Science - resource picked. Do next thing. Art - resource picked. Pick artist read. Draw something. Japanese - resources assigned by someone else. Follow their plan.
  18. This is actually a big deal in some of the circles I am in. Participation in various contests is the biggest reason that some parents choose not to grade skip their child. None of my kids are interested in these things so it wasn't an issue for us, but it can be. My opinion is that you should pick a grade and then advance it like the rest of the schooling community does.
  19. I would not choose Count of Monte Cristo because it is very very long. Good book but not worth the length for a slow reader.
  20. I would find a tester that you like and see what he/she recommends for your situation.
  21. I understand that the OP's child is higher on the BMI charts and doesn't have exactly the same problem. But BMI is bad for this case too! I would be extremely upset. My older son, the 14 year old, has a BMI that put him significantly below what is healthy. His doctor and son and I have been seriously working on getting him to eat more for the last six months. Actually it has been longer, but we finally started making progress about six months ago. It has been a long hard slog and we are no where close to done. The last thing my son needs to be told that his grade in a class is based on his ability or not to gain weight.
  22. Thanks for the good thoughts. I, kind of, know that I won't be going to the gym for a while. I can't comfortably hold anything in that hand. It makes the gym a frustrating place. I am glad your daughter's hand want broken. I really think that the big concern isn't the broken finger it is the nail bed that came out of the skin that is causing the worry. Sigh. Jennefer
  23. I saw the urgent care doctor today. She says it isn't infected and that is good. She was also very happy I have the appointment on Monday with the hand surgeon. She wants them to deal with it from now on. She doesn't want to deal with the stitches or anything else. She thinks the specialist needs to deal with it for sure. I think the big worry is the nail bed and not the broken bone part of the finger. I will know more tomorrow. So do I cancel with my trainer now or wait until Monday? We were supposed to be working on deadlifts... That is not going to happen.
  24. Yesterday morning I tried to close the garage door from the outside and crushed my ring finger on my right hand between two panels. After a trip to urgent care where there were X-rays taken and the nail bed was put back under the skin, I was told that it was a compound fracture and told to see the hand surgeon on Monday. And the urgent care doctor again tomorrow. So right now I am taking my antibiotics and pain meds like a good person. I am very mellow on codeine. But I would like to know how long it is going to be before that finger is usuable again. I can wait until Monday and ask the hand surgeon, but I thought the hive would know. This is going to mess up my weight training because I can't grip anything right now and it is going to mess up my recorder playing because I can't cover the holes. Not to mention I can't drive when I am taking the codeine. Sigh. And we were just getting started with school.
