  1. Wowser, I'm impressed! Here is one of my favorite Scarlett quotes from the film: "You'd rather live with that silly little fool who can't open her mouth except to say "yes" or "no" and raise a passel of mealy-mouthed brats just like her." Looks kinda lame written out...but I love the way Vivien says it!
  2. oooh...I love these! my favorite book day students are the teachers day 1900 day (old fashioned school day) the _____th day of the year (sort of like how schools always have the 100th day of school!) grocery store school day (all lessons based on planning, shopping and cooking dinner) I'll think of more! :D
  3. OK --- I have two. Both were made by my mom (who has been gone 20 years now.) :crying: 1. Bread and gravy --- white bread but her homemade pot roast or roast beef gravy 2. Scrambled egg sandwich --- crack an egg into melted butter on a hot skillet; scramble it with a fork while it's cooking; serve on white bread with a bit of salt and a bit of ketchup. And neither of these were the same if my mom didn't make them. P.S. I guess we only ate white bread! And it was served at every meal!
  4. Hey, Beach Girl! That is so cool! I want that Spanish one! I actually bought the spelling game to help my kiddos brush up. They like stuff like that. GaMom: I would suggest asking around if anyone you know will be selling one. We got a used one from a friend for $50. Never had a prob. w/it. We knew before buying that is was in good shape. Good luck
  5. Cleo, I'm so sorry...you are in my prayers! I won't watch this movie or movies like it. (hug)
  6. Thanks, gang! I looked at the specific places mentioned in this thread and nothing was available. But, with the general advice here and at the Fodor's forums, I found a place in Alexandria, VA. It is $180/night with free hot breakfast, shuttle to metro stop and a free snack room (!). Samuel, others on the Fodor's site wrote to avoid Prince George's County, too. It must not be for tourists! We are going to do every thing we can possibly cram into 6 days/ 5 nights! I am so excited I can't hardly stand it. I am going to prioritize and factor in down time so I don't have a mutiny. Thanks again!
  7. My dd and I adore it! (We also love The Office...) I love Giselle in NY! Giselle: Now if only I can find a place to rest my head for the night. Robert Philip: What kind of place? Giselle: I don't know. Maybe a nearby meadow or a hollow tree. Robert Philip: A hollow tree? Giselle: Or a house full of dwarves. I hear they're very hospitable. Giselle: Nobody has been very nice to me. Robert: Yeah, well, welcome to New York. Giselle: Thank you. I also love the scenes that mimic scenes from other Disney movies. It's fun to spot them. And...I even bought the Giselle and Robert dolls. I say they are for dd, but really, I got 'em for me...don't tell.
  8. We are going to D.C. as a family. Kids have never been, dh and I only went at ages 14 and 15. Where can we stay that is not more than $150/night? Or am I fooling myself? I have some tour books for D.C. (Fodor's) and tried to get prices for a hotel they listed in the 150-200 range and it came back as 280/night! That was in the Capitol area...should I look in Bethesda, near a Metro stop? Someone point me in the right direction! Or tell me to start rebudgeting. Thanks so much!
  9. awanama: I don't like public schools (I think the system is a broken system that wastes far too much money and is not as successful as it should be). But I don't dislike/bash public school children or their parents as a whole. I dislike/bash people on an individual basis. Where they go to school or went to school is just one factor. ;)
  10. "I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn't study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people."—Dan Quayle
  11. Hi E_E: IMO, a newborn costs very little. I think you need 3 things: Diapers A few sleepers A sling This is truly all I used in the first few months. I nursed and slept with all my kids. None of them ever got a bottle (never bought one) or formula. My babies wore footie sleepers so much my dh called them their uniforms. I tend to agree w/Copswife about the fun factor
  12. Another thing to consider: If you have forced air heating, get the ducts cleaned. It makes a huge difference. I hate carpets... we don't have 'em. Not a one! Floors are so easy to care for compared to carpets.
  13. Plain rice krispie cereal...that actually came on my ds's hospital tray when he was hospitalized w/ rotavirus. I thought ramen noodles were fried?! You might want to check. Hope everyone feels better!!!
  14. Yes...I died (figuratively)...of boredom when I read it. Also, my ds never ate "pig or cow" once he found out that's where pork and beef came from. At 8 y.o., he stopped eating poultry, too.
  15. Toni... Just a curious aside...did you once post that you were raised Roman Catholic?
  16. Uhhh...I don't get it, (said in my best Josh Baskin voice.) Were the misbehaving sisters homeschooled also? Or did she mean you were complaining b/c you homeschool your kids and expect different behavior? Thanks for explaining...and sorry about your hurt feelings!
  17. I once called the police after a young man (early 20s) came to my door selling "cleaning products." He had a generic spray bottle with some kind of fluid and a rag, nothing else. He wanted to come in the house and clean something in order to show how great the product worked. I told him no, that my dh was sleeping. He said, "I don't think your husband is home. I think you're here alone." I slammed the door and called the police. The police came and found him a few doors down. They asked for his permit to sell (I guess you need one in our town) and he didn't have one. It turned out he had an outstanding warrant on another charge. The police came back and thanked me for calling! But it all happened so fast! I can easily imagine the incident turning out awful.
  18. I'm praying right now that this works out! Stop saying/writing you're spineless! Really, stop right now and tell yourself you have a spine of steel!
  19. Not to hijack...but related to babes in car seats in stores...I see so many parents who do not undress their babies in winter once they are in stores! The poor little things are sweating up a storm b/c stores are so hot and mom won't take the baby out of his snow suit! You can't dress a baby for 20 degress and leave him that way in a 70 degree store!
  20. Ha-ha about the peeps...my boys have been nuking peeps and everytime they do I call my dh and say in my best Hannibal Lector voice, "Are the peeps still screaming? Can you hear the peeps screaming, Clarice?"
  21. Wow, that's great! Love the 'Canes logo and uniforms...but ever since they knocked the Sabres out of the playoffs...well, let's say I strongly dislike them. ;)
  22. Thanks for the donut recipe...I think the only "person" in the "world" who likes donuts more than me is Homer Simpson. JFS...can you share the Christmas cookie recipe? TIA!
  23. We're Roman Catholic. We have more options than just one service and it is really wonderful when family member(s) are sick. We can basically find a Mass within a 10 min. drive from 4 PM Sat. to 8 PM Sun. Dh & I switch off if one of the kids is sick.
  24. but upon testing, you found out you weren't. For a while now, it seems as if I just can't hear the way I used to. And I'm scared to do anything about it. Anyone have anything like this happen and it turned out OK?
