It's crazy to be so excited, but...

I'm addicted to Costco. If you think you will be shopping there a lot, get the Executive Membership. -
My 6 y.o. son has been taking piano for over a year and will continue at least until the end of elementary. He is a little trumpet crazy at the moment and has already told me that when he is in middle school he is going to switch. I've been thinking of renting a trumpet for Xmas and signing him up for a few months of intro lessons as a gift/trial. Do any of you have a child that takes trumpet or cornet? How old was he or she when they started lessons? If you have a kid learning two instruments, how do you plan practice sessions? Thanks in advance.

What magazines do you read?
morningxmorning replied to plain jane's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I really like The Economist but anytime I subscribe I just end up feeling like a failure. It is very dense and I can never keep up with it week to week. I just signed up for Smithsonian and I'm thinking about Nat. Geo. I also get O, People, and Entertainment Weekly. -

Help me buy a guitar for a beginner
morningxmorning replied to Alicia64's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yamaha sells a decent quality (stays in tune/good sound) guitar that comes in 3/4 size. You should check music stores that sell used gear. -
My 6 year old has been taking lessons for about 1.5 years. I didn't make him practice at all the first 4-5 months. Once his first recital came up we started practicing about 10-15 minutes at least 5-6 times per week. His lessons were 1/2 hour each back then. His teacher said he has a good ear and plays really well as do most of the other piano playing adults who have heard him. Since school started, I've bumped his lessons up to 1 hour per week with a new teacher and he practices everyday (except lesson day) for 20-30 mins. I try to get his lessons accomplished before school or in the morning on the weekends. I don't play piano but my husband does and so does his uncle who studied composition in school and usually practices with him on Sundays. How intense is your daughter's dance class? Maybe you could do a longer lesson weekly and then see how she feels about it in three months.

Why isn't the Island of Sodor covered in smog? Why hasn't Sir Toppam Hat been fired for incompetence? Can the drivers control the trains or not? Why haven't those reckless trains been scrapped already? Do the taxpayers know that steam engines are being sent all over the Island to pick up single objects or give one person a tour? Why won't Farmer McCool hire some farmhands instead of expecting trains to do all his work? Thomas once tried to send Neville to his death based on a rumor, why was this just brushed off?

My husband and I innocently walked into a Costco one day and walked out with a Blendtec. It's been three years and I don't have any complaints. I've seen people demo-ing the Vitamix and it seems pretty darn similar.

My French is pathetic
morningxmorning replied to Mama_Rana's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I used "Pronounce It Perfectly in French." It's a series of CDs and a booklet. It helped me when I was first learning the language. -
I got mine in the mail yesterday. It is my 4th Kindle. I'm just getting the hang of the new features but I do like that it is backlit because I love to read in bed and clipping a light onto my old one was tiresome.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll upgrade the iPad version and maybe upgrade to Xbox later.

How old for music lessons?
morningxmorning replied to JumpyTheFrog's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My 6 year old started private piano lessons at 5 but could have easily started at 4. My 3 year is in a preschool Suzuki class right now and just doesn't have the attention span for it yet. -
how to get started in modeling?
morningxmorning replied to AngieW in Texas's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Call the administrative/marketing branch of local department store and see if you can find out which agencies they use to hire models. Once you have the list, call each of them to see when their open call hours are. Ask if they have height & figure requirements as far as her measurements go. Take photographs of your daughter with her hair pulled back and no makeup. There should be a full face image, one of each profile, a smiling photo and a serious pose all in color. You should also have a few full body shots with her wearing something form fitting but not too revealing (leggings and a tank top for example.) Go to at least 4-5 agencies and see what they say. Each agency might have a different focus so being rejected at one doesn't necessarily mean that she can't do it. A good agency rep will be blunt with you. You have to know how you child will react to rejection, criticism, or too many compliments. The rep may hand you a list of photographers to take professional head shots or they may take photos themselves. The price here can vary quite a bit and it's not a guarantee of representation. Check out youtube, I'm sure there are lots of videos with posing/walking tips. Also, NEVER ever let a minor child go to a photographer or go-see alone. -
Are all of you using it on iPad or on your computer. I downloaded the "lite" version for my son but he's having difficulty with the controls. Is the computer version (or full paid app version) better?

No weight gain but after nearly a year of being period free, my cycle suddenly came back and lasted for three months straight before I had it removed.

We used it for a year. My son liked it at first but then got bored with it. In the end, even I thought it was overly repetitive and dull.

Good deodorants for boys?
morningxmorning replied to PeacefulChaos's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I tried a Tom's of Maine Lavender scented deodorant once. The first day was fine but two days later the skin under my arms started peeling off in huge strips. It was quite alarming but of course YMMV.
