  1. While reading the thread about avoiding books that talk about being in school, someone said they went out of their way to find books about kids who are homeschooled. What is your favorite book featuring homeschooled kids? (fiction or non, but would really like some fiction my dd7 could read.)
  2. Exactly. What about those naturally occuring nitrates? Yes, the "experts" seem to like to keep people confused, IMHO. I live by my Dad and Granddad's philosophy: I'm going to die anyway, let me die happy. It's just food. No matter what we do, "experts" are always going to tell us it is bad for us and is going to kill us. News flash! This body is not going to live forever, unless Jesus comes and gets me before I die. I really don't mean to sound flippant, but I am so tired of the war on sugar or the war on salt or the war on whatever it is that tastes good and therefore must be demonized. Ok. Stepping off the soap box.
  3. Just sounds like she is trying to convince herself that she has made the right choice. I'm sorry, but Unschooling and Christianity are NOT synonymous, IMO.
  4. Mothersweets, I ended up having to download it to our desktop. My laptop never would let me download it. I right clicked it, but the "save link" or whatever it says was never an option on my laptop. I think it has to do with security settings, but I was able to download all the others I bought just by left clicking them. Good luck!
  5. Oh, this thread is a God send!!! I am having the same issue with my dd7(8 next month). She has always been my sensitive one, but this crying over every. little. thing. is driving me nuts! Today, after church, we went with friends to eat lunch. After that, we went with the same friends to some caverns near our home. She was with her friends ALL DAY (from Sunday school on till 5:30pm). When it was time to go home, she got in the car and cried her eyes out because she didn't want it to be over. You would have thought they had died and we would never see them again the way she was carrying on. We'll see them again on Sunday, if not before! She exhausts me.
  6. I WANT Got this one from Rivka, on another thread.
  7. My dd7's name is Brianna Claire. My dh put his foot down with dd5 and would not let me name her, but her middle name is Elizabeth. hehe If I ever have a boy, his name will be James, and we will call him Jamie.:D No, I am not obsessed with Outlander, and I am not waiting on pins and needles for the next book to come out (in 2012!!!!) Soooo, have you seen the graphic novel????? Cartoon men in kilts!:tongue_smilie:
  8. Congratulations! Wish I could join, but it'd be a bit of a drive.:tongue_smilie:
  9. I could quote so many on this thread, it's embarassing.
  10. :iagree: FLL3 has enough review in it that you will quickly be able to see just where her strengths and weaknesses are, and also have a great introduction to diagramming (my dd7's favorite part!), if she hasn't done that in ps. I actually can't speak to using Growing with Grammar, as today is the first I have heard of it.:D Good luck and welcome!!
  11. Where were you two weeks ago before I started my new excel schedule???? Thank you for posting this! It is going to make the rest of my schedule so much easier.:D
  12. I had planned on using R&S, especially after finding it a curriculum sale at such a great price. We got close to finishing FLL2, so I got out R&S to begin planning. Wow, what a difference (in presentation of material)! I got online, looked at FLL3, and ordered it. Grammar is dd7's favorite subject. I think it requires just enough writing for her (she really hates writing), has enough review for my comfort (I get a lot of eye rolls and "Mom, I know this all ready" stares, but I can quickly see if she really needs the review or not with it right there in the lesson. No flipping back through trying to find that rule or list.), and doesn't take all day to do. Boy, did you get all that? I believe whole-heartedly that she would HATE grammar if I had decided to use the R&S. I have it, though, if someone needs one! :tongue_smilie:
  13. :bigear: We school all year (full schedule), but I am wanting to have a lighter load this summer. Reading these posts have got the wheels in my brain turning...
  14. My dd5 is the only one who does this (she's my drama queen. Dd7 just cries like her heart has been shattered). She didn't say it often, and it is getting fewer and farther between times. To the "I hate you" statement I have always responded with, "I know you're angry with me, but you still have to/can't/must" whatever the situation was. I know her saying it was an expression of anger, and she has begun to switch over to telling me that she is angry, not that she hates me. To the "You don't love me" statement (this one is so rare, I can only remember her saying it once), I do pretty much the same thing. I do add in that she knows that isn't true and I know she's angry. The whole spiel again. During all of these I will try to remain calm and make sure I am not using a tone that matches her's. And, there are lots of hugs, kisses, and "I love you's" once the situation has calmed down. From both sides.
  15. Have you tried putting the quote into Google and seeing what comes up? You can try here and see many country's school years: http://www.infoplease.com/world/statistics/school-years.html
  16. I have only gotten the "I could never do that" and "you're so brave" comments, but never anyone being confrontational. I did think I was going to have to a few weeks ago at a going away lunch for a man my husband works with. While we were sitting waiting for our food to come, one of the hostesses walked by, did a double take, then asked my dd7 what school she went to. Dd7 said she was homeschooled and the lady said something to the effect of, "Oh, isn't that nice." I spent the rest of the time thinking I was going to have a cop come get me because of the tne of her voice.
  17. I LOVE the Outlander series!!! I would love to see a movie, but "they" would have to take out so much. I don't know if they could do it right. Right now, I'm just holding my breath till the next book comes out next year! Loved Ender's Game, too.
  18. I understand that the closings and things will be hugely inconvenient, but not getting paid is what will hurt us the most. And what really crawls up my butt and dies is that Pres. Obama and Congress will go right on getting their paycheck no matter that the gov. has been shut down. But not our servicemen. That is just backward to me. *grrrrrr*
  19. Yes, I completely agree with this, as well. The more I learn about Dr. Enns and how he views/interprets the Scripture, the less I feel comfortable using his curriculum. This seems to be more of the way I will be using it as well. That, or I will be sending it back...:willy_nilly:
  20. Yes, this is how I am feeling, which led me to ask the question. Lots of second guessing going on, but I do think I will use level 1. Will be using it prayerfully.
