  1. I've seen a couple where it was called books of one syllable This is one.... http://www.gutenberg.org/files/36183/36183-h/36183-h.htm
  2. This does remind me of a sad (to me) interaction I had about a year ago. Apparently the schools use a lot of sight words. My adult step-daughter askec if I had any resources for a friend who's child was struggling in K with the sight words. She needed to work with the child over the summer before grade 1. I asked the friend "are you looking for resources to teach him to read, or flashcards to teach sight words?" Yeah.... flashcards. I gave her a set I had for visual learners (picture as part of the word)... but I shake my head. Isn't the whole point to learn to read? "I See Sam" could have had that child reading basic stuff by summer's end with just a small effort each day, and reading well not much longer afterwards.
  3. Congrats! It is great to hear! CMU is very homeschool friendly. I believe they generally have a booth at the main Homeschool conference in Manitoba....
  4. I have really enjoyed using homeschool planet. My kids have their own logins and can mark off what they did. It is flexible for adjusting things. Links to websites or files in the assignments are great. Reports are not great.
  5. Yes, that one hourse was very stressed. The noise there would be very loud, especially where it was echoing between the buildings, the crowds of people, and everything would be pretty hard on the horses. I'm sure they are very careful in selecting the horses and that they are carefully trained, but those circumstances would be impossible to replicate for training and practice. The rider did a great job keeping the horse controlled. I actually noticed one of the carriage pulling horses looking rather skittish and the rider on its left gently corrected it with a 'stick' of some sort. (Guided it with the stick). Both the carriage horses on the right seemed to be a bit stressed to me.
  6. So the book isn't wrong, but the article is. I get that. I'm not complaining about the info, but the title. So the title should say North America, not the United States.
  7. Should I point out that the map includes Southern portions of Canada as well as Mexico....? We are not the 51st and 52nd States.....
  8. I think it is regional, and possibly class related. When I was young, I rarely heard anything. If my Dad said Damn it, you ran! Nothing said in the schools etc. I moved at age 9, to a new neighbourhood, and there was a lot more said.
  9. My youngest earned her "North Star" award in Beavers, and "swam up" to cubs.
  10. I agree. I'm sure my parents worried a lot at times. And I worry some. Now this is young teens, running errands with their Dad's iphone. (We are considering getting a phone for when a teen is out). The first time they are doing something new, we might check the iphone location a couple of times. But not once they have done it a bit, unless they are late or something. A quick check is less obtrusive than calling them. Plus the iphone is supposed to be put away unless using it, just so they aren't a target. (The phone is just used to call us if needed... possibly to give info on an errand or whatever).
  11. Well, I agree it sounds nuts for someone that is 102. That said, I walk with a cane and can not walk far. (I sometimes use a walker now, but didn't at this time) I had a stress test. They said to try the treadmill... if that didn't work they had an exersize bike. If that didn't work they would just have me wakk the track, but that wouldn't give nearly as much info. I was shocked, I can walk a treadmill (holding on) much much better than I can walk. I can't get on or off without help either, which stops me from exercising on one.....
  12. Not sure about now, but at one point kids often were driving on farms as part of helping. It also gave them a good 2 years of experience before getting a "full" drivers license. I put full in quotes because it is now a graduated license. If we were still in Alberta, I would welcome my 14yo son having a learners permit. But where we live now he has to by 15.5... if he does the school drivers ed program.
  13. In Alberta, unless it has changed, you can drive with a learners permit at age 14...
  14. Yes, it is true that there will be sounds that they have not learned in Barton yet.... but only 1 or 2 new ones per book. And they can be pretty easily taught. I now swear by I See Sam, and wish I had learned of them for my oldest kids. It is the easiest method for teaching reading of the many many I have used.
  15. And I am making these helps up mostly up front, because I make the cards in a master decks profile, so I can provide the same cards for all our profiles.
  16. Yes, I have used close deletions before, and knew how to make more than 1 card in the field, or have more than one deletion on the same card. I read the article, and now have a new cloze type with 5 fields, which I labeled MAIN, Help card 1, Help card 2 etc. (Ok, maybe not exactly accurate names). So now I can have cards made with overlapping cloze deletions... lots of them.... So, for example.... MAIN: {{c1::James 1:5}} - {{c2::If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.}} HELP CARD 1: James 1:5 - {{c3::If any of you lack wisdom,}} {{c4:: let him ask of God,}} {{c5::that giveth to all men liberally, }} and {{c6::upbraideth not;}} {{c7:: and it shall be given him.}} HELP CARD 2: James 1:5 - {{c8::If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,}} {{c9::that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not;}} and it shall be given him. etc.... And I modified the card setup, and it is working great!
  17. THANK YOU! I have totally revamped our Scripture Mastery verses using cloze deletion.... now with multiple cards with varying amounts of info removed. I love this! I felt I had done a fair bit with anki, but adding more fields to the cloze cards to make a larger variety of 'help' is cool. I am thinking of adding condition fields, to conditionally make the extra help cards only if they need them..
  18. Just a couple of weeks ago I contacted a vet because our 19-20 year old cat was sick and dying. I let them know that this was what we felt was needed. This vet had a few touching things.... They have a candle, with a sign (nice looking), basically indicating that when the candle was lit that a family was saying a finale goodbye to their pet. They sent a nice sympathy card. A couple of years ago we had to say goodbye to another cat... about age 16. A different vet. This did involve some tests and treatment... tests showed cancer. The decision wasn't as clear, but the vet did agree that his chances of survival were pretty slim, and when the decision was made by me they supported the decision. They made a plaster cast of his footprint. For the OP, I doubt they would suggest it for a pet that is happy and not in pain or unlikely to survive.
  19. Half siblings, who are also cousins. Step-siblings are related only through marriage of the parents.
  20. I'm Canadian, but in a different province
  21. My son has officially earned his Chief Scout Award as of tonight! They need to order the badge yet. I don't know if there will also be a big cerimony in the province anymore or not... I think it is usually in May so hopefully he isn't too late. I can't remember how many challenge badges (sort of like merit badges) he has earned... they are 4 wide and fill his sleeve...
  22. In a couple of days, our family will have... 44 cases of chocolate bars. 30 bars per case. About 1 month to sell them. It is for the 2 oldest kids to go to summer camp. We have managed that amount before... but, this year we do not have a working car. (After selling the nearby streets, we would drive the kids to a street within the community and the kids would sell door to door... we would move the car forward, refill their boxes, etc. Or even when we had a storefront to sell at the car was needed to get the bars there. Doing that number of bars was challenging within the time even then. I'm really worried.
