  1. I really like Elementary & Intermediate Algebra by George Woodbury. I taught from it for a number of years. I like the 3rd edition best, but 1st or 2nd will still be okay. (I made comments for the 3rd edition & I really do see some good changes to it.) Apparently Woodbury was just a couple years ahead of me at UCSB, so since we had the same instructors, that may be why when teaching from the text, he says things as explanation in the text that I typically say in class as warnings to students. I think it's the best text I've used to teach Algebra I & II.
  2. It's tough and there is a sense of loss with some of the decisions. We make the best choices we can, but we can't do it all. I chose to have my son. I choose to homeschool him. I won't be making much money as a result. I won't be adding much to my retirement. It isn't what I'd envisioned for myself. It is good though. It's just hard thinking about the "might have beens" sometimes. :grouphug: Hope you find some peace.
  3. It feels more "textbookish" to me. Seems to lie flat enough as we're using it. Most of WWS is reading - it's not like WWE with the writing pages as well. We're on week 14 now & I haven't felt like I wanted it bound.
  4. I think WWS works well as published. I liked splitting WWE into selections, student pages, and teacher pages.

    Trampolines

You may also want to check with your homeowners insurance first to see if a trampoline will cause an increase. I would love one.
  6. My sister's wedding cake was the companion cube from Portal 1.
  7. I give one on Thursday in a building that houses a new theater. I gave a test last Thursday when they had a performance and we just heard the bass for over an hour. Looks like there's a different performance this Thursday. Very glad I won't teach on that campus again. Night class finals also seem to be when they clean floors. I typically hear machinery through finals. Humbug. Hope heating system holds up!
  8. In the bottom right of each post is a Report button. You'll see Report MultiQuote Quote Report just isn't in a box.
  9. I found that using base 10 blocks for the problem as he wrote the steps (traditional algorithm) was very helpful to my son. With long division especially, I'd make him show each step with the blocks, write the step, then show the next step with the blocks. Eventually, the traditional algorithm is much faster. Any problem that's incorrect had to be shown with the blocks. I really like base 10 blocks for all 4 basic arithmetic operations. I also like how using the blocks shows what's going on with the traditional algorithms too.
  10. They've just gone to a new version if you're buying from Singaporemath.com I don't think you'd get much from just reading the student book and doing the activity book. I think if that were your approach, you'd be better off just getting science books from the library on a topic. We used MPH 3/4 and are in 5/6 now. I love the material, but I think you'd lose a lot of the challenge by not using all components. I think the text/activity alone is weak. Do activities/discussion from the TG, read additional books, do the HW, HOTS, and Tests, and I think it's a seriously solid foundation. You might check out Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (BFSU). It's also a good bit of work, but it's much cheaper (especially if you get the ebook).
  11. As a heads-up, she may need a different model later on. Different colleges have different requirements. Also, if she'll be taking the AP Calculus exam, check their requirements (which may change as well). Our college (cc) uses the TI-84+. Some instructors are moving toward the N-Spire, but I'm not sure about it on tests (SAT, ACT, AP). I think it's okay with the 84 panel, but I'm not certain. These would be the two models I'd be considering at this point.
  12. In our state, students get an extra point in GPA for honors and two extra for AP.
  13. I'd argue it'll also help the kids learn correct pronunciation of some names and places :) I'd just have them follow along with the text to see the spelling of the words. Or we sometimes alternate - one paragraph or section each.
  14. Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball Bear Snores On just found - Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig (ds 10 is enjoying this one :) ) Mama, Do You Love Me? Kitten's First Full Moon Owl Babies
  15. Xanax works wonders for me. It does very little for my husband. You might check with your doctor. For me, it turned the panic attack mental screaming, heart racing down to manageable levels and let me function. I don't take it if I'll be driving though. Exercise can help. Also deep breathing (kind of like in pregnancy). Meditation. Thinking through whether there's anything you could currently be doing and if not, working on letting go. I'd sometimes visualize writing down all my thoughts and problems on a white board and then erasing them. Also, Xanax :) :hugs: Hope you find some coping techniques and get some peace.
  16. We don't do sick days. We school year round and if one of us is sick, or sometimes if we just have too many outside commitments, we don't count the day. I don't know what you mean about lessons not matching school days. We don't have a problem getting the state required 180 school days in a year.
  17. Singing in the Rain White Christmas Princess Bride Blues Brothers For just explosion movies, Con Air The Rock (Connery and Cage are just fun) But my all time need to feel better show is As Time Goes By (not movie, but absolutely wonderful)
  18. If this were an actual post, there'd be something to reply to. :)
  19. I really like Dell Logic Puzzle books. I used to be able to find them at drug stores, but I don't seem to be able to anymore. You can get "value packs" online from the publisher though. Prior issues, so not current, but the puzzles are still great :)
  20. I like the spam to just disappear, but I can see confusion and frustration when posts just are deleted. I like how on the old boards they'd show that a post was deleted and occasionally say WHY it was deleted. Vanishing posts without commentary does nothing to prevent similar issues from happening in the future. (on topic) Joanne - you're showing incredible grace here. I'd be trying to save for an emergency fund and maybe for retirement, but I'd talk with a financial consultant as well first. If you declare bankruptcy for the medical bills, would the retirement still be there or would it be taken? Kind of pointless to save if you can't be sure the money stays yours. If you do go with an IRA, Vanguard has low fee funds.
