  1. I used to belong as a way to help support their work on behalf of other parents who were being harrassed by state employees. Money got tight, and the lack of real threat to our family, plus as a (non-licensed) lawyer myself I don't feel unable to deal with any harrassment that might occur, thus we dropped our membership.
  2. Yes. I think a lot of unhappiness comes from a bad childhood and the attachment issues that causes. Those are big problems, and they make solving the rest of life's (also plenty big) problems that much harder. But many others have walked this path before us, and we can take advantage of their wisdom, and the help of the Holy Spirit. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." I'm going to be asking my DH to read Harville Hendrix's books Giving the Love That Heals and Getting the Love You Want. Other resources are Dr. Laura Schlessinger's Bad Childhood, Good Life, and Boundaries in Marriage by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.

  4. Rats. Mommylawyer beat me to it. On this board you don't get much of a chance to answer the classical questions. Unlike every other board in the world.
  5. Oh what a blessing. A drought like that makes us truly appreciate a good job when it does come, eh? Enjoy.
  6. Thank you, Eliana! That will make a nice addition to my history resource list.
  7. Saint Louis University, class of '84 in Poli Sci George Washington University National Law Center, class of '87 (And I'm NOT using 'the' -- dang pretentious, if you ask me. They use the original archaic National Law Center rather than law school for similar reasons.)
  8. We started this for the boys' Christmas a couple of years ago, after reading about another member who did this. 9yo got Peter Pan 12 yo got Sherlock Holmes Next, they'll receive Swiss Family Robinson and ?? (undecided). [sharon takes notes from the other posts]
  9. Good advice; thank you. I am just starting to go over the files of homeschooling articles and notes I have filed away. This is a nice addition.
  10. Thank you. I was just bemoaning the lack of attractive options to DH today. I will look for it.
  11. See? Listen to Sarah B. and strider. Something's going on, and you need to find out what.
  12. Ah, yes, it is beautiful. We architecture nuts just adore that place. Just don't go there in August. Arkansas is sooo hot and muggy in the height of summer. The rest of the year is great though. Try autumn some time, and it will be stunning.
  13. Yeah, but you're just a natural-born trouble maker, Carmen. You can't help it. That's why we all read all your posts. :lurk5:
  14. I believe that it can't be a matter of self-discipline. You aren't getting enough sleep, my dear. Apnea may be the culprit. Restless leg syndrome. A cold coming on. Or any of the other myriad sleep disturbances people are prone to. If you are going to sleep rather than getting bored, you need more sleep. These things have many long-term health consequences. I advise you to look into it rather than try to fight your way to alertness.
  15. Another vote for a floor model! Ours just had a dent in the front panel, and it works great. I don't remember what it cost, but it was a substantial discount over new/perfect.
  16. Eh, the usual. What about socialization? (from ps teachers) Homeschoolers take the best students and keep them out of the public school so it hurts the schools. You're turning your back on the (failing) local school, instead of staying and fighting to make it better. How will you teach them higher level science courses? How will they be able to prove they graduated to employers?
  17. See, there's the problem with not getting over here every day -- you miss Chelle's birthday! Hope it was lovely. :-)
  18. Ooh, brings back memories of reading Foxfire in the 70's! Thanks for the tip, Laurie.
  19. I go through spurts. Some times I can't wait to get back and see what everyone thinks about the issues of the day (like what they can't do without no matter how poor) and what great curriculum they're looking at. But sometimes I realize I haven't posted or read in so long there are whole new crops of people I've never seen before. Happily for us all, the new people are just as bright and engaging as the elderly boardies, and I can learn a lot from them too.
  20. I like pancakes, especially oatmeal pancakes. No deeper meaning. :001_huh:
  21. Yes, they do. Hoarding is one manifestation of a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Hoarding is apparently one of the hardest types of mental illness to treat. Because it's the one disorder symptom that solves the anxiety-control problem for the sufferer. They don't want to give it up, because stashing the next item *fixes* their anxiety for a little while. I did some research on this when I was working as an organizer. I never want to work with a hoarder again. They can't think clearly, can't make decisions, and have no motivation to change.
  22. Your kids weren't frightened by Wrinkle in Time? I'm surprised. My somewhat-sensitive son was freaked out by the very first description of the Dark. I loved hearing it read aloud by my sixth grade teacher, though. It was perfect.
