I need kitten help! About two months ago, I got a male kitten, his name is Boyd. He has been a great little kitty and fit in with our family perfectly, but I sort of regretted not bring home one of his brothers. I feel that cats generally do better in pairs. I didn't want to overwhelm my DH with two cats at once, so I just got Boyd.
Well, about 6 weeks ago, my neighbors cat had a litter of kittens. DH actually suggested we get one of those kittens as a companion for Boyd (he also has figured out he likes cats, though he won't admit it 😉). So, yesterday, we brought home Sawyer! Yay! The two cats are exactly two months apart in age.
The household set up is this. Boyd's "room" is the hall bathroom. His food, water, litter box and bed are in there and that's where he sleeps at night. I know that, obviously, Sawyer couldn't just share that room with Boyd, at least not right away. So I set up my large dog's airline kennel for Sawyer. I put a bed, food, water, and litter box in there for him. He slept in there last night.
My questions are about what is normal behavior as I help these two get used to each other. I know I probably started all wrong to begin with by letting them met face to face right off the bat. When I did first introduce them, Boyd sniffed Sawyer and hissed a bit. But his fur didn't stand up. After a while, they started to play a bit. But Boyd gets too rough. I will say that Boyd is 3.5 months old and VERY playful and fiesty. He gets pretty rough with us and we redirect him to a toy when he does. But, so far, when Boyd gets to rough with Sawyer, Sawyer with squeak or cry, and Boyd doesn't stop. I end having to separate them. I'm having a really hard time discerning whether Boyd is just being playful and doesn't know his strength, or he is being mean. Is there any way to tell? How might I discourage Boyd from being mean/rough? Any other thoughts on how to make this go as smoothly as possible? Thanks!!
