I do not get hung up on spelling well in or even around 1st grade. We used Phonics Pathways for phonics and it also was our spelling for the first 2-3 grades. By the time they finish the phonics program we move to a spelling program. I have used several, but All About Spelling was the best for my struggling speller. It is also working fine with her twin sister who is a more natural speller. Jennie

I took my oldest two children with me for the first time ever this year. There was a teen track and good worldview seminars. I wouldn't take them unless there was a purpose for them. I left the little ones home with their dad. Jennie

I used it with my son. We went through most of the first book. He retained precious little of what we spent all that time on. We then tried Spelling Power which worked a bit better for him. Dictation worked the best. This was before AAS was published. I now use AAS for my other struggling speller with very good results. Jennie

I just had to pick Jonathan David as that is my son's name. I liked Jonathan for his first name, and David is his dad's first name. This was how we avoided the junior thing, but still used his dad's name. It was a toss up for me between Emily Madison and Madelynn Kelsie. I picked Emily, but it could have gone either way. Jennie

We have only used TT Algebra 1, and it worked for us. Since it is the only one I have ever used I don't know if I can rank it as my favorite. However, we have decided to go ahead and use all of the TT high school program to get all the concepts. Jennie

Well, I think we may use the lit portion as well. I do have another lit book also, but it is mostly short stories and poems. I have this on order, so I haven't not received it to look it over yet. Jennie

My dd use only the full length books as a 7th grader. She used CLE reading for her short stories and poems. This worked out fine for us. Jennie

My daughters balked at laying out the tiles each time until I got the magnets on them. Now, it isn't so much an issue. The kids can't see the need to use the tiles. I, however, can. Since I can see the bigger picture of why the use of the tiles is important, they will continue to use them. I think my struggling speller needs them more than her more natural speller twin sister does. Yes, this program requires the teacher. There is no independent work. However, it only takes me 20 minutes per day to work with two children. I think it is all a matter of how you space out the step you are working on. Jennie

Well, I can tell you that in my case CLE was a better fit than R&S for my struggling learner. She still has some trouble catching on to the LA concepts but at least she is getting the repetition from the spiral approach. Jennie

Try going directly to the site. clp.org Once you are on their site, click on the Education tab. Then click the Browse Curriculum tab. On the side bar, click Support Materials. Click on the link to the test or TM you want. Then you will see samples and files. Click on that for the pdf. I tried the links, and they worked for me. When I put my oldest two in CLE, I didn't know about the diagnostic tests. So, I just put them in at grade level. My dd did fine in CLE 500 as a 5th grader after completing R&S 3rd grade and a smattering of the 4th grade book. My son finished only the R&S 5th grade book, and I put him in CLE 700 LA. It took him two years to complete it. I could have put him in the 600 level, and still been in the same place. So, all that to say, it really depends on what kind of a language arts student your child is. If they struggled a little with R&S, I would definitely use the diagnostic tests placement recommendation. If R&S was fairly easy and low stress, then I would go in a grade level. Have you considered the possiblity that you might need to go back closer to what her grade level would be chronologically. I don't know what lead to her working farther ahead, but you might have to adjust that. Jennie

WNY is drier than last year. Last year was so wet that my garden flooded twice, and all the crop growth was stunted. This past week has been a little rainier, but not by much. I mulched with straw to keep things wetter longer. Jennie

We are going to try Notgrass Exploring World History in tha fall for 10th grade with my son. We used History Odyssey Ancients Level 2 this year after trying TRISMS and some things on our own, but I need something that has a tests/quizzes. Just thought I would share since it seems we are in a similar situation. Jennie

sadiegirl, I am not completely sure I understand your question. The diagnostic test does not need to be purchased anymore as it is now in pdf form. However, you can still buy paper copies. Tracy linked you to the actual test. I linked to the teacher's manual. The diagnostic test for LA 500-800 contains four tests. I start my children in the first test regardless of grade level. If they pass that test, then I move on to the second test, and so on. The teacher's manual gives you the answers for all four test as well as the criteria for "passing" the level. The "Notes to Teacher" section gives you all the information for administering the test. Does that answer your question? If not, ask again, and we can try to figure it out for you. CLE Bible is not Sunrise edition after 4th grade. The 4th grade material is coming out this summer. I did not find the non-Sunrise editions to be open and go. In order to make it flow correctly, the teacher needs to sit down and figure out how many pages the student should be completing each day. The content was good, but we ended up dropping the Bible curriculum this past year. Just thought I would mention this. Math, on the other hand, has been great for my three daughters. It is completely open and go. Jennie

I would forget that they are twins and supposedly in the same grade. Teach them to their needs. My girls are very different academically. They are almost one year apart in their abilities still. One has some accelerated tendencies and the other has some processing issues. Jennie

Nadia, You and I have taken the same path. I started my son out in TRISMS last fall, and we had the same reaction that you did. There was not enough direction, and we just couldn't pull it together. Then I did history on my own for a while. Around Thanksgiving I found History Odyssey. I purchase Level 3 Ancients, but it was too advanced for my son. So, we dropped back down to level 2, and finished the year with it, but I was not as thrilled as I thought I would be. I finally came to the conclusion that we need a textbook style for high school. I have decided to use Notgrass Exploring World History this fall. I like the literature component. I bought the quiz/test booklet. I really feel the need to quantify the learning that he is doing, and this seemed like the best fit. It sounds to me that a more textbook driven course is what you might be looking for. Jennie

Sounds like vertigo to me. I had it about 3 years ago. It was not fun. My dh took me to the doctor's office by the afternoon. It took me about 6 weeks to feel normal after that. Jennie
