  1. For this reason, we have our dd3 in a PMO program two mornings of the week.
  2. Our whole family was supportive from the start. It was a pleasant surprise to us. Some members of my family provide helpful suggestions or concerns of our homeschooling. It has always been well intended and provides a valuable perspective.
  3. I've worked in hotels for years and I still wear no shoes and use the things in the room. I do like to stay at nice hotels though.
  4. Our ds reacts to apple juice and apple sauce (even organic). He gets very hyper and loses self-control. Others have noticed it with him too. We've talked with many specialists about it and have always been told it's in our imagination. It's somewhat a relief to hear other's experience with it.
  5. Self sufficient is the main word in this quote. I once worked for an unethical employer. I hated it, but I didn't have a choice. Quitting meant going hungry and homeless. I didn't have the luxury of choice. Being self sufficient has allowed me to be true to myself and hence happy. I believe that is something to strive for.
  6. Oh, no. They don't make them for men. (Please tell me I won't be the ONLY homeschooling father there...)
  7. I've also run into a similar situation from a co-worker and have a complete loss for words. Why would a mother leave her three young children to move 500 miles away? And not provide any support to them? It makes no sense to me.
  8. My wife and I have been investigating domestic adoption for a few years. We were surprised to see open adoptions as more of the rule than traditional/closed adoptions. The only explanation we've been given for this is that birth mothers are more willing to consider and utlimately go with adoption if it is open. We're surprised to see so many prospective adoptive parents supporting open adoption and that traditional adoption is seen in a negative light. We know a few couples that have adopted internationally in part to avoid open adoptions situations.
  9. I thought I read that all political threads were banned! Shame on you! :tongue_smilie:
  10. Same here. We share homeschooling responsibilities equally in our household. I am routinely asked by new people if my wife really does all the teaching. The mothers' attitudes are generally that no husband would want the job or is up to the task.
  11. Do all mothers have a sense of maternal instinct? I thought they did, but my wife and MIL give a big "NO!" for an answer. What do y'all say?
  12. Our family references a higher power, but we're not specifically any one denomination. We do not attend outside religious services regularly. Spirituality and religion are part of our homeschool education. When I investigated the Cub Scout religious emblem knot, I do not see a non-denominational faith choice. So, is my son out of luck for earning a religious emblem knot? (This is not a criticism of BSA. I am only interested in validating my understanding of the religious emblem program.)
  13. Well, if it's the cartoon character show, we went Saturday morning. And it looked sold out. Everyone enjoyed it. My wife mentioned that it's somewhat difficult to exchange tickets even days before the show, so afterward might be a challenge. And the show staff do check tickets for the show's date/time. But, it's worth going if you can.
  14. Agreed. Go to court. The DA will reduce it. It won't be reported to your insurance co. It's standard procedure. And, yes, I have also (shamelessly) used my children as an excuse to get out of or reduce speeding tickets. It usually works well. That cop must have a heart of stone.
  15. I eat it straight out of the container it was purchased in. I usually have to stop myself from eating the whole container at once. But, I love cottage cheese.
  16. Definitely seen the trend for many homeschoolers getting to middle and high school to move to a brick and mortar school. Those older years are tough. Most of the families I've met that are still homeschooling in the high school years do it because of a strong academic need or special needs that are not supported in a different environment. I love homeschooling my children, but it is only one of many possible options for their education. Presently, it is the best option for our family. If a better option becomes available, I will not sacrifice my children's education for my personal selfishness. That's why I try so hard to make HSing the best option.
  17. GWG retention is great for our son. Finding a LA program was the trouble area when we started HSing. GWG fits very well. We supplement with handwriting.
  18. Homemade sweet tea has gotten somewhat boring lately. What have ya done for less boring sweet tea? I'm open to everything except less sugar...
