  1. The glasses do work but make sure to get a good pair that fits. At 13, the kids are checking so he'll want to see really well. :D We were a bipolar hockey family this year; boys played at 2 different rinks. It wasn't easy but doable. Fortunately, we were able to carpool with another family for older son's practice. I definitely recommend trying to do that, if you meet family you're comfortable with. My husband and I split the remaining practices; same with the older's travel games. Both will probably play travel next season and then it will get really crazy!
  2. Ok, dumb question but where do you find the Honors questions? Are they on the website? I did a quick look and didn't see anything. My oldest is getting ready to begin Pre-Algebra so I'm definitely interesting in hearing more about the Honors...
  3. Ah...I see it now. I was thinking it was a noun clause that serves as a D.O. but the indirect quote was throwing me off. If I had changed the sentence to Dad gave a half full glass, the D.O. becomes obvious. :tongue_smilie: My son initially picked out "was" for the predicate and I couldn't figure out how to explain why it wasn't...Again, the Hive comes through!
  4. I'm ashamed to admit that this sentence has me and my boys flummoxed. Dad said the glass was half full. "Said" is the predicate, "Dad" is the subject but I'm not sure what to do with "the glass was half full." I know its an indirect quote but that isn't helping me parse the sentence. Off to get out my Grammar Island along and another cup of coffee in shame...
  5. I'm using SOTW 1 again with my 5th grader but adding the recommendations SWB lays out in the logic section of WTM. She adds encyclopedia work, outlining and additional reading. I feel its "plenty meaty!"

  7. My ds is doing the following: MUS Beta WWE 1 Explode the code FLL 1 Phonic Pathways SWR for spelling SOTW 1 Ancients Mr Q Earth science Spanish Art @ coop His school work usually takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. He's finally started to become a proficient reader so I'll slowly increase reading time.
  8. I never use all the buttermilk when I buy it. I saw that Paula Deen said you can make your own buttermilk by adding vinegar to whole milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes. Had anyone tried this? It would be a lot cheaper and you could make it in smaller quantities...
  9. My PeeWee son's practice starts at 8pm and will only get later as he gets older! My boys play hockey but with limited ice, there's no way around Sunday games. Our church doesn't have a Saturday or Sunday night service so we just try to do our best, even if it means going and leaving the service a little early. Go Ducks! :D
  10. Because once you have tenure, it practically takes an act of God to get fired. Because you're usually home by 4pm. Because you get summers off and all those "staff development" days without kids...
  11. SWB makes a great point in The Well Trained Mind that kids who miss phonics instruction often will hit a wall around 4th grade when the words in their reading materials becomes significantly more difficult. They can't rely on sight words and pictures to clue them in any longer. I'm curious how the public schools deal with this especially if they use a whole language program.
  12. I've just downloaded them as a PDF and opened them in IBooks. I wasn't sure how to save the pdf's but IBooks seem to do that for me. What is Dropbox?
  13. I've downloaded a couple of curriculums onto my IPad but one has worksheets that need to be printed. Do I need to download an app?
  14. You are doomed to failure unless you're part of the government system...Give me a break! :banghead:
  15. Argh! I missed the sale by a day... I can't believe I forgot about Mr. Q. It looks great.
  16. I was hoping to compile a list of sites for used books and textbooks. I've listed the few that I know so please add any more to the list. Thanks! Amazon Ebay Alibiris

  18. I am so with you! The Christmas break along with long weekends at the beginning of the year and hockey tourneys have wreaked havoc on my school schedule. This week is our first full week back since the holidays...sigh :tongue_smilie:
  19. Does anyone know if Dolciani samples are available online? I haven't been able to find any. Also, Amazon has the course book listed for $65. It seems a little high. Is that about the going rate? I'd hate to spend that much and find out that it may not work for us :glare:
  20. Can you watch them online or do you have to buy them? :bigear:
  21. :iagree: If you're looking for hockey skates, Bauer makes a Flexlite skate that is very comfortable and affordable. Some hockey skates can be extremely stiff. Can't help you with the figure skates. :D
  22. I'm totally sold on the Iphone and couldn't live without mine. My husband uses his all day for work. They do sell a charger/holder (not sure exactly what it's called) that continually charges the phone without being plugged in to give extra battery life. It makes the phone a little heavier though and is an extra purchase though.
  23. So the Kindle Fire wouldn't allow you to do actual work on it like an IPAD? I was hoping that it would since it's so much cheaper. I'm thinking it might be worth making the investment in an IPAD if I can use it for school but it's so much more expensive...:glare:
