  1. Of course the public schools don't teach their students what reform means. That way, when these same students have children of their own and they're unhappy with the state of their education, they won't know what to demand! :tongue_smilie:
  2. My son's hockey tourney is right near Magic Mountain. Is it a fairly easy train ride? How close does it drop you off from the conference? That might be an interesting option. My son has a kilt but I don't think I could squeeze into it. :D
  3. I can't wait. I'm especially looking forward to hearing Michael Clay Thompsom, SWB & Andrew Kern. I just wish it wasn't Memorial day weekend. My boys have a huge hockey tournament so I may have to fit everything in one day. I could spend one day alone just browsing the curriculum hall! :tongue_smilie:
  4. You can download the Kindle app onto an IPad. You cannot access the Kindle store from it however. I just went onto Amazon/kindle store, found the free classics I wanted and with 1 click, they were downloaded onto the IPad...so cool!
  5. Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. I believe there's 1 book for the comedies and 1 for the tragedies.
  6. I just found out you can download the free Kindle App onto an IPad. I couldn't access the Kindle store from the IPad app, however. Instead, I went onto Amazon's Free Kindle Classics section, found the book and with 1 click, The Princess and the Goblin was immediately downloaded onto my IPad! Awesome!! Now I'm off to search for other classics mentioned in this thread...
  7. Yes, you're right. I couldn't access the store from my IPad. Instead, I went onto Amazon, chose the book and when I hit "purchase" it asked if I wanted it sent directly to my IPad. Voila...1 click and it was on my IPad. Totally cool! :hurray:
  8. I just downloaded the Kindle app onto my IPad. I want to download many of their free classic books but I'm not sure how. Do I just log onto my Amazon account and download them there? I'm so use to ITunes...any help would be much appreciated!
  9. Ellie...you're totally missing out! :D I'm not a big "techy" person but I love, love, love my IPhone!
  10. I posted this question on the other thread but I thought I'd post it over here too. My question is practically, how do you deal with the language in many of these books? We're reading Rosemary Sutcliffe's In Search of a Homeland and I'll occasionally stop and explain the meaning of a word or phrase. What do you do however when much of the language is so different? Do you stop occasionally to explain important words or do you just read through with the hopes that in time, they'll become much more comfortable with the language and vocabulary? Stopping frequently to explain something would seem to suck the joy and beauty out of these books.
  11. I, too have been inspired by this thread. I've pulled out my copies of the Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare along with Anderson's Fairy Tales & A Child's Book of Stories. Having all boys, I know I need to start in small doses but I'm excited about this new direction. My question is practically, how do you deal with the language in many of these books? 12. My shipment was lost by USPS. I clicked on the email link under "contact us" and Tina returned my email within minutes.
  13. Update on my lost order: The USPS is a total joke! 3 days of phone calls have produced nothing. No wonder they're a drain on our economy and are going bankrupt...I finally decided to contact AOPS and Tina returned my email immediately. She has offered to send out a duplicate order via FedEx tomorrow. Awesome customer service! Now I'm off to start stalking my FedEx guy. :tongue_smilie:
  14. USPS website said my order was delivered today but no package is here. I had it shipped media mail and it only took 4 days. Now, I've had to open an investigation to find what happened to it. :svengo:
  15. The average is about $4.35 for regular unleaded. :ack2:
  16. A few of us moms just went to a class free 1 1/2 hr class at the Apple store yesterday. We were able to tailor-make a class specifically about topics we were interested in. We spent some time looking at how to use the Ipad for school. Our instructor showed us how kids can make video presentation for school projects. Also, how you can download textbooks or other educational materials onto IBooks. Apple has launched I Tunes University where you can watch actual college lectures, view class notes and much more from actual universities...all for free! If you have an Apple store nearby, they are more than willing to schedule a class for kids (or parents) specifically showing how to use the Ipad for school. Our instructor Rick was great; very accomodating, willing to answer any question and invited us back for another class in a few months. I've downloaded WWS and Mr. Q's Science onto my Ipad and use it everyday. All this to say that I love my Ipad!! Also, here's a cool link on the Apple website. http://www.apple.com/education/ipad/
  17. True WTMers only watch those "most talented" or "so you think you can dance, sing or whatever" shows from countries like Uzbekistan or any other "stan" countries. Come on people...have some standards!
  18. Well, as I recall from my forensic days, crock pots are a good option. Without going into too much detail, this was a preferred method for removing flesh. You could also use a bucket full of beetles. Much cheaper but definitely slower. :D
  19. You people are killing me! Not only did I buy 3A/3B but I bit the bullet and picked up PreAlgebra too. Now I'm waiting in nervous anticipation...:tongue_smilie:
  20. MUS-if it ain't broke... SOTW-love it!! WWE-also loving WWS SWR-tailored it to my needs and it works great ETC-yes, some busy work but really reinforces phonics & spelling PP-easy to use and it works I've just had an epiphany...if it can't call it by an acronym, it doesn't work for us :D
  21. You could probably get away without one but not both. I think the DVDs are invaluable. I still use the TM but to a lesser extent.
  22. I'm in So. California so the commute for you might be a little tough. :D The travel hockey costs are about the same here. Hockey directors try to keep the in house costs as low as possible to draw more kids into playing. Although the level of competition among So Cal travel teams is actually very strong, we just don't have large numbers of kids to draw from so reasonably priced in house programs are a must.
  23. If I remember correctly, our inhouse program runs about $600/season (Sept-Feb.) The summer season is about the same price. That includes one practice and one game per week. The price jumps up significantly when you move into travel hockey.
