  1. Below are some of the candidates' responses when asked if they supported homeschooling. It is interesting to note that there is a former homeschooler who is running for the office and is very much in support of homeschoolers. There is also a candidate who provided such an offensive stance (IMO) that I felt it needed to be shared here. These comments were originally made to the California Homeschool Network. ******************************** Karen Blake "I fully support home schooling." 5/20/2010 ________________________________ "I believe home schooling is the right of a parent. I believe some parents do the job well, while others do not. If you chose to home school your children through the K-12 years or to only do it through a certain grade level, I hope you do the job well enough to allow your children to continue their education and work well with other members of the community with whom they will be associating." Grant McMicken Candidate for SSPI (916) 792-5970 ________________________________ Greetings, Mrs. Williams: I did not expect any home schooler to be satisfied with my response. Nor will I change it to appeal to the thousands of home schoolers who are voters. If this election were in the 1950s I would have received a question from someone representing tens of thousands of parents who opposed the racial integration of our public schools. They would have been looking for a candidate who agreed with them. My response would have turned them off and they would have urged me to read all the arguments in favor of segregation. I know those arguments, as I know the arguments for home schooling. Now, I'm not equating home schoolers with segregationists, but the situation is the same. As I would not edit my response to the segregationists to win their votes, I will not shape my response to home schoolers to seek their votes either. I explained before that there are legitimate reasons for home schooling. If you meet those conditions, I fully support home schooling. But that is not why most home schoolers engage in it. And while they have a legal right to do so, I do not support home schooling in those situations. Home schooling's appropriate for children who have special difficulties that make it impossible for them to participate in traditional schooling. But under California law, a parent has the right to home school provided the parent is qualified to offer instruction. Personally, I believe nearly all kids would benefit more from being in traditional schools. Many parents home school for religious reasons, because they still hold outdated views on race or ethnicity, or for what they consider to be moral reasons. Since we have provisions for students to attend a school outside of their local community when there are legitimate reasons to do so, home schooling as an alternative to "unsafe" campuses is hardly a legitimate alternative. For the most part - overwhelmingly - the public schools of California are not only safe but are providing a high quality education. Yucca Valley should be no exception. If it is, as Superintendent I would like to hear the complaints. There has also been a tremendous amount of fraud connected with home schooling. Corporate organizations have sprung up to drain precious taxpayer dollars from the state budget to "supervise" home schooling. That has been to the detriment of those children, who by necessity, must be home schooled. My advice? Send the kids to a traditional public school. http://leonardmartin.us/wordpress/ http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=353608 http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/05/17/BA1J1DF1CR.DTL FaceBook Profile: http://www.facebook.com/stevegdoesloans#!/profile.php?id=100000011360041&ref=pro\ file Best Regards, Leonard J. We intimately understand why parents homeschool their children. I will see to it that homeschoolers are protected while in office. Sending you an attachment so you have a better idea of our campaign. Take time to view the links too. Thanks for asking-- Henry
  2. I bought some as stocking stuffers. I thought that it was very cool. My husband and brother were less interested. :glare: They are very pretty, and IIFC have a softer and smoother feel than silly putty.
  3. I am looking for the same thing. This is the closest that I have found, but I don't actually own it, so I'm only going off the product description. http://www.amazon.com/AP-World-History-Flash-Cards/dp/0764179063/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274507290&sr=1-2
  4. This is not fact. It depends on who you ask and what their agenda is regarding language or apes or whatever. :glare: So in this case I might say, " FYI, not everyone is convinced of ....." However I think that it would have been better to do it in that thread, and be general in this one. It seems sort of mean to that OP to be essentially talking about her behind her back.
  5. I would caution you that MOST ob/gyns and nutritionists do NOT have current information on PCOS. I cannot tell you the number of uninformed bad ideas that have come to me from "professionals". As someone who has dealt with this for a long time I would recommend using the internet to become VERY informed and THEN seeing a doctor. The soulcysters site linked above is a good one. As I said before most doctors will prescribe bc pills (not good!) and most nutritionists will point to a food pyramid full of grains and carbs (very bad!).
  6. :iagree: I would very strongly advise against putting her on bc pills - which is the "solution" that most give for PCOS. While bc pills will force her to have a cycle, they just cover up the PCOS problem, they don't actually fix anything. And since you are adding more hormones to the mix it gets even harder to figure out what is going on. The two things that have had the largest impact on my PCOS have been diet and Metformin. Diet: Low carb for sure. I am gluten free and pretty much grain free. A diet like The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson is perfect. No soy. Real food. Preferably organic, grass fed, free range. Drugs: Metformin is a drug used for diabetes, which is now being used for PCOS. It helps to deal with the insulin resistance issue. One of the big symptoms for me is that untreated I will only have a period about every four months. With diet modifications and Metformin I cycle about every 40 days. So still not perfect but much better. This from Wikipedia: Another review recommended metformin unreservedly as a first-line treatment option because it has positive effects not only on anovulation but also on insulin resistance, hirsutism, and obesity often associated with PCOS.[4 I also recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
  7. Do you know the name of the doctors involved? If so, I would call them and tell them that if they don't report it immediately you are calling their licensing board and reporting them. Taking prescription drugs from someone else is a federal crime. Could the pharmacy report? Honestly, I would probably go sit in the police station until someone had had enough of me to prompt them to get it dealt with NOW.
  8. I take this to mean don't cut the corners (ie do short cuts), a constant cutting of corners would lead to round corners.
  9. It might amuse you to know that we have the exact opposite problem over here. Perhaps we should switch kids? :D
  10. I have been thinking about this boy all night - how quickly it can all change. If your family needs anything while you are supporting your cousin, please let me know. :grouphug:
  11. I never had grammar as a kid - thank you whole language. I have discovered that my lack of understanding is most troublesome when trying to learn a foreign language. Latin has been impossible without going back to some of the English grammar. It could also help you be a really good Mad Libs player. :tongue_smilie:
  12. :grouphug: Thinking of you, your cousin, and her sweet baby. :grouphug:
  13. There is a gender difference in spatial ability. Men tend to function more on a grid (N, S, E, W) and women on paths (go like you are going to the grocery store, then turn left at the gas station). This from Wikipedia: Men on average have a standard deviation higher spatial intelligence quotient than women.[1] This domain is one of the few where clear sex differences in cognition appear. It has also been found that spatial ability correlates with verbal ability in women but not in men, suggesting that women may use different strategies for spatial visualization tasks than men do.
  14. I would tell him that I think his little ritual is great - so great that you would like to implement it for yourself too. So M, W, F, he can continue to stop for food. T, Th, and S he will cook a healthy dinner for your kids while you go out to the restaurant of your choice. Sunday everyone eats cereal. Then again, I am kind of snarky. :glare: Besides the money, health, respect thing, I would be annoyed that he was delaying his return home. Even going through the drive through adds time. Does he not think that YOU are ready for a break???
  15. :grouphug: If I were her grandchildren I would want a chance to "know" and begin to process the loss before she was actually gone.
  16. I agree - but for those of us who are lost, understanding a date and what happened would be a really good starting place. :001_smile:
  17. North is always up or forward. And my GPS must be set to account for this fact. When my husband messes with it, and the GPS shows me moving left on the map, when actually the car is moving straight ahead... I simply can't drive like that.
  18. My low blood pressure is related to hypothyroidism.
  19. This story came up on the same page: http://www.woodtv.com/dpps/news/strange/wash-man-on-trial-for-branding-children-jgr_3357108 :001_huh:
  20. Most sewing machine stores have used/refurbished machines that people have traded in to get a new machine.
  21. So ordering online it is just a blind pick?
  22. When I am looking at used books on Powell's it will list a book at a certain price, condition "standard". Then it will list the same book, same "standard" condition at a higher price??? So what is the deal? Is the more expensive book in better condition, but they just don't take the time to detail that condition? Why (or how) would I choose one book over another?
  23. :iagree: Even my mediocre grasp of the basics has helped a LOT!
  24. Would it be possible for you to find a tutor? Perhaps through a local university?
