Unschoolers on Good Morning America!
Caraway replied to thowell's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It drives me crazy when someone says they are "unschooling that topic" or "unschooling on Fridays". Unschooling is something done across the board, for everything. To teach some topics and "unschool" others goes against the entire idea of unschooling. Unschooling, as demonstrated and described by the unschooling community, views all topics as equally valid. One cannot teach some subjects and not others because this leads to the belief that some topics are more important. Unschooling is a child centered, relaxed approach to all subjects at all times. If a child seeks out a text book on math and asks for lessons this is fine because it *comes from the child*. The lessons cannot be suggested or mandated from the parents. The closest thing is "strewing" in which parents put interesting materials around the house in the hope that they will spark an interest in their children. Radical unschooling extends the scope to behavior and family life. At its best unschooling is a very powerful idea. In many ways John Holt (and Sandra Dodd) express wonderful ideas about the role of education and what it means to be an educated person. However, even people like Dodd tell stories about how when their child decided to take a college math class they didn't know the symbols used in basic math. I am not an easy going enough person to send my child into a college classroom while I yell "Oh yeah, division can be written with one number over the other!" I attend a large local homeschooling conference that is OVERWHELMING almost all unschoolers. In some ways the unschooling kids are wonderful. The teenagers hug their mothers in the hallways, they open doors and help without being asked, they function well in multi-age settings, they have a wide range of interests. However they also seem to specialize in mohawks and chains, they talk a lot about video games and TV, they hang all over each other all the time. They (and their parents) talk about how they stay up all night playing video games and sleep all day. In the weeks leading up to the conference there are constant reminders that shoes must be worn on the hotel grounds because it is state law. Don't swim in the pond. If you try to fix oatmeal in the hotel coffee maker please clean it up yourself. Last year I saw multiple people peeing in bushes. :001_huh: For years I have attended this conference with my mother who is the Assistant Superintendent (in charge of instruction) in a district with over 18,000 kids. For years I have tried to explain to her that this conference didn't represent what I wanted for my kids. This year I took her to the Midwest homeschooling conference. I am pretty sure I heard an audible sigh of relief. I would say that in my city 60% of the homeschoolers are unschoolers, many of them very radically. The GMA video was an accurate depiction of those families. -
Losing more weight when *not* exercising??

Have you read the Primal Blueprint? It covers this issue. -
I would not be upset, she does own the copyright. It is nice that she is willing to give you a clean copy! I think that all photos on the web should be marked with copyright or a watermark. Photos are stolen all the time from blogs etc. Having the photo marked is a deterrent, but also helps claim ownership if necessary.

Going gluten free (GF) is MUCH better than it used to be. I think that in the beginning it is easiest to switch to foods that are naturally GF - meats, veggies, fruits etc... Be careful with sauces because gluten is often used as a filler. It took me two weeks to start feeling way better, but it takes 6 mos to fully benefit from a GF diet. Being GF clears up all kinds of issues for me - some that I had no idea had to do with gluten. Example, the rash in my ear. Who would have known that ear rash = gluten??? Anyway, I am Celiac and have been GF (in various levels of seriousness) for 10 years. Now I am completely GF, mostly grain free, and my kiddos are also GF. Seriously I think MOST people would feel better on a GF, reduced grains diet. Once you start experimenting with GF baking don't get discourage by all of the GF flours and weird tastes. Check out The Gluten Free Almond Flour Cookbook by Elana Amsterdam. Almond Flour is fabulous and easy to use, and can be bought online. Seriously this is the best GF cookbook I've found for really yummy cookies, scones, etc. (I sub butter and sugar for oil and agave in her recipes without problems. 1:1) Good luck! Feel free to PM me with any questions. :001_smile:

What does a typical day for your 3rd grader look like?
Caraway replied to King Alfred Academy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Some days I think it would be wise to ship mine off to PS for a while so that they could see how good they have it! Of course if they loved it I would have to leave them there for a LONG time so that they could appreciate what they have now. I have no experience with 3rd graders. But I was thinking about you and yours today. Hope tomorrow is better! -

Caraway replied to RamonaQ's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Perhaps commit to some scheduled activities? Like "we will plan to see the girls every Wednesday from 3-6 pm for a playdate." Or "I go to the grocery store every Saturday morning, so I will swing by every Friday night to see if you need something." That way she can plan on the help and know that it will be there. -
`Dealing with Wells Fargo, once it is at the bank you will have an answer within 30 to 45 BUSINESS days. It is trickier with multiple lenders involved. It is usually the buyers that back out! Foreclosures are easier and move faster, but often involve multiple bids, more cash, etc... depending on your market. The "problem" with a SS is that you give up a lot of the control that you have as a buyer.

What will you have finished by the end of first grade?
Caraway replied to Caraway's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks for sharing your first grade details! It is really helpful! So how are you making sure that stuff gets done? Do you have a particular daily schedule? We get so relaxed around here that we fail to get anything done! I have to find a balance, where it is still enjoyable, but I don't have a 5th grader on OPGTR lesson 75. :001_huh: (PS. We were at Park Day on Friday! We were sorry to have missed you!) -
Nope!
