  1. I guess I haven't read the original. I will be adding it to my reading list.
  2. I am still currently savoring Whiskey in a Teacup. It is a coffee table-ish book that I pick up occasionally when I need a quick read that is visually appealing. I am also reading Black Robe Fever, which is about judicial injustice. The Count of Monte Cristo is my current audiobook. I have needed to look up the synopsis more than once and have been having trouble keeping up with certain characters after a particular point in the book.
  3. Beautiful photos! Except that blasted Great Expectations. The ending was depressing. I agree! That is the reason I don't care for a lot of memoirs. They just seem like a way to air one's dirty laundry. It may be your story, but it is also their story. Unless someone has chosen to commit a terrible crime and in such chosen to lose one's right to privacy for said crime, then an author should do their best to protect another's privacy.
  4. I finished the 6 Day Body Makeover by Michael Thurmond. I have started incorporating some of the suggestions and have already lost 3 pounds. I am currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo. It is interesting and not at all quite like I thought it would be. Since it is an audiobook, it is likely I will finish it in the next week or two. 1. Below Stairs by Margaret Powell (Selfie, Pick Your Poison) 2. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (Soldier, Bingo) 3. 6 Day Body Makeover by Michael Thurmond (Making Stuff up, Pick Your Poison)
  5. Good suggestion! I wouldn't think to check to see if they were plastic!
  6. How much does it generally cost to remove a cast iron tub and replace with a shower? What about tiling an area that has damaged wainscoting? The room is tiny. Just barely holds a tub and toilet. Our children's bathroom has a large walk in area with double sinks and a separate tub/toilet room with a door. What would it cost to remove the wall and inner door to have one large bathroom? _______________________________________________ We aren't wanting to do a full remodel, just add a prefab shower and possibly remove a wall.
  7. Yes! Where do I start? One political party to another. Giving weird looks to those strange homeschoolers! Why would anyone smother mother like that!? Now? My youngest children have never even been in a public school and I've graduated 3 from homeschool. I used to believe all children's misbehavior was a discipline issue, until I adopted a child with RAD and FAS. All the sticky subjects...vax, pro vs con you know what, patriarchy, etc. etc. etc.
  8. This morning I finished And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. It was fantastic! If I reach my reading goal for the year I want to reread it to see if I catch clues along the way. 1. Below Stairs by Margaret Powell (Selfie, Baker's Dozen from Pick Your Poison) 2. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (Soldier square, 52 Book Bingo)
  9. This is my Goodreads profile. https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/15922265-edie
  10. I took a couple of years off from the challenge, and am glad to join again. I finished Below Stairs by Margaret Powell today. It was a carryover from 2019 and is subtitled The Classic Kitchen Maid's Memoir That Inspired Upstairs, Downstairs, and Downton Abbey. It is a very quick read and conversational in tone. I enjoyed it. I plan to complete the BINGO board genre suggestions and a Baker's Dozen from the Pick Your Poison list. Below Stairs will be my "Selfie" choice. I am currently reading Whiskey in a Teacup by Reece Witherspoon, Black Robe Fever by Gary L. Richardson, 6 Day Body Makeover, and am beginning And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie on audiobook. To help me keep track of future weeks I plan to keep a running log of completed books here: 1. Below Stairs by Margaret Powell
  11. I am using the Bingo board to add books to my Good Reads to read list. The list is really encouraging me to add new books I never thought to read. This year is going to be so much fun!!
  12. Is there a trick to posting a book cover from a Mac? The right click option isn't working for me.
  13. Forgive me if you've already explained this, but would you please elaborate on the bonus squares?
  14. Try drinking hot lemon water upon waking and weaning yourself off coffee gradually. If you start to feel a caffeine headache coming on, a couple of sips of coffee or tea should help. After a couple of weeks you should notice your cravings lesson. The trick for me is replacing the habit, hence the hot lemon water.
  15. No mishaps here, fortunately, just illness. Christmas is not as fun when everyone is sick.
  16. I would've done the same thing. Post a message on NextDoor saying, "I have your packages," bring the packages in, and plan to deliver in the morning by 9 am or so. I would've been livid if the police showed up at 7am.
  17. Fantastic thread idea!! I can think of two offhand, though I wouldn't use the term pleasure to describe either. Necessary would be a better word. The first is Never Split the Difference. It is written by a former FBI hostage negotiator. It really helps you understand things from someone else's perspective and win negotiations in a non-manipulative way. Another is Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. It is about the founding of the FBI and the Osage murders. This book is very close to my heart because I am related to people in the book and know some of the family stories personally. It is very well done and accurate. Even if you don't care about either topic, it is a must read for Oklahomans and historians. It is part of United States history that isn't well known. Martin Scorsese is filming the story for the movie and I pray that he does it justice.
  18. We made a lot of positive changes this year that will hopefully carry over in the future. We had Christmas dinner and present opening on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day was solely nibbling on leftovers, playing with the presents that were opened before bedtime and left on the living room floor, and stockings. It was fantastic! Next year I hope to have everything purchased before December. I don't really know how to do that without some impersonal gifts or generic gift closet items. No matter how hard I plan ahead there is always some random party or gift exchange with specific rules that pops up, that we really do want to attend. I end up running to Target at the 11th hour to meet said requirements.
  19. It needs to be decorative or at least patterned to hide stains, and comfortable. No back of neck ties.
  20. Thank you for the doctor visit recommendation. I certainly don't want to make things worse with the diet!
  21. What gifts or gift ideas did you experience this holiday season? My mom, who lives 1/2 way across the country from us, sent us money for our family. She suggested we use it to eat out, see a movie, or just do something fun. The kids are wanting to go bowling at a local retro bowling alley. I thought that was such a fun gift idea! It is probably less than what she would've spent per person and something we will remember.
  22. I just read through the link. Thank you for sharing it. The reviews do look promising, but I'm concerned about the initial diet vs. maintaining. I could sign up for a 6 week program. I'm not willing to sign up for no sugar, salt, etc. for life program. I've tried couch to 5K a couple of times and have decided that running is not the sport for me. Not only is it a challenge for me to leave the house for that length of time, but I also have an organ prolapse. Dh and I are researching treadmills and have decided on a price point. I plan to listen to audio books and do regular household tasks like menu planning whilst walking on the treadmill. Dh's sisters are doing the same thing. Hopefully, with the accountability we will all be able to stick to walking regularly.
