He's eight. We have a balance ball and a wobble stool that he uses in addition to a normal chair at the school room table. We allow him to move as much as we can accommodate. Math drills frequently are done on the small trampoline we keep handy and flashcards are done while he runs laps in the room. He sees a speech therapist and we're trying to get him in to see an OT as well, but our pediatrician isn't being helpful. Luckily we're moving this summer.

A lot of research is coming out about how standing while learning helps children with behavior issues (and even neurotypical kids) with behavior, attention, and memory. Have any of you gotten a standing desk for your child for those lessons that have to be done at a desk or a computer? If so, which one did you get and would you recommend it? I'm considering getting one for next year since I want him to start working on his keyboarding with an actual computer instead of a tablet.

A lot of the threads I had subscribed to previously are no longer showing up in the content that I follow. Also, I tried following a thread today and it isn't showing up as followed in my "content I follow." However, we keep the dose low and manage a lot of symptoms with behavioral or environmental changes. He needs protein to pay attention. Toast with peanut butter, cheese, milk, yogurt, something. If he doesn't have it for breakfast, it's not going to be a good day. Other meals and snacks need to have protein as well. Face him away from windows to minimize distractions. Frequent changes to what we are doing. Phonics may be in three different five minute blocks throughout class time. He does better with natural light than with flourescent. Also, I have found that he doesn't have to be looking at me to be listening to me. He's capable of listening to me while he is doing something else. That was difficult for me to grasp, because I thought if he wasn't looking at me, he wasn't paying attention. Also, I have found that reminding him to do something (I told you to put your shoes away!) got a fit, where if I just asked him, (Where are your shoes supposed to be) got quick compliance.

Don't open the boxes, just chuck them. If you don't know what is in them, and they've been there since your last move, just throw them away. They obviously aren't important.

The Lego website has the Star Wars advent calendar on sale today for 24.98. That's the best I've seen it priced all year.

I started with a very small list of goals. That way, I could get them accomplished. Once I had that working to my satisfaction, then I could add something new. I tried to get each curriculum finalized before I would try adding in the next topic. That way I didn't feel like I was failing on too many fronts at once.

There's also a set of Star Wars leveled readers by DK, if your kid has outgrown the phonics set.

Read the book Weslandia by Paul Fleischman. It's a great book about a boy who creates his own country over summer break.

If you were thinking of getting a trampoline, I would check with your home insurance agent first. Most policies these days consider trampolines "attractive nuisances."

My aunt kills watches, and I have some friends who kill them too. My aunt had mixed success coating the back of the watch casing with clear nail polish so it didn't come in contact with her skin.

Definitely not alone. We usually crawl out of bed around 8:00am, but we take a nice long breakfast to wake up, and my medication needs to kick in before we're up to teaching, so classes usually don't start until around 10:00. This is one of the things I love about homeschooling. Our schedule is made to fit our needs, not the other way around.

Have you seen the Down to Earth Geography workbooks? Open and go, there is one for each grade 1-6, and they are keyed to National Geographic Society standards.

I have strongly been considering buying this set of phonemic awareness games because my son is a very kinesthetic learner. Would something like this be helpful? I'm not sure where you are on the money v. time spectrum.

Oddly, this thread gave me the impetus to go look at all that stuff I bought and haven't used and figure out how to add some of it in. This is our first year homeschooling, though, so we have slowly been adding in something every week or so as we establish a routine and his attention increases. I put together a binder with lots of fun worksheets (I have several kindergarten skills workbooks that I bought at various places) and mazes, etc. This is now going to be "the daddy binder." Daddy can work on this as review stuff with him in the evening for a few minutes as review. Edit: I realize this probably came across as super braggy. Look at me, we are awesome! :P Really, the only thing I haven't changed since we started two months ago is our handwriting program. Third reading program, third math program, slowly figuring out how to add in some science, and we finally made it to the library's storyhour for the first time last week. So I'm just so glad to find something that will work. I hope. I may have to bribe my son with ice cream.
