  1. I was under the impression that the Pathways program was providential. And MOH is definitely not secular.
  2. My son has red dye #40 sensitivities. Irritability and insomnia. I clued in pretty quick to what was causing it because my niece was the same way. Amoxycillin (pink antibiotic) would turn her into a little hose beast. So yes, make sure your kid's chart at the pediatrician is flagged. If you are having problems finding dye-free medications (especially cough syrup) check in the diabetic section. Typically their sugar free medications are dye free. And yes, it's incredibly difficult to find dye free foods. But as far as eating ground up beetles, tell them it's for their Ancient History class - you're just doing what the Egyptians did. :)
  3. http://www.nature-watch.com/books-field-guides-c-142_145.html?osCsid=cs9h38jq6lqg9sc7ep2v86sli1 http://www.acornnaturalists.com/store/Field-Guide-Collection-C10.aspx I particularly love this series: http://www.acornnaturalists.com/store/Nature-Finder-Guides-C4116.aspx They are small, about the size of an index card, and are based on a dichotomous key, so it teaches you how to look at plants to help classify them, rather than just match a picture.
  4. Thank you. I think we may do this next year before we head into SOTW.
  5. I bought a standard index card holder box at staples and it works fine. Just take one of the cards with you and make sure it fits.
  6. How would you describe the world view of the curriculum?
  7. Education.com also has fun workbooks and worksheets.
  8. Did you change the drop down menu to look at the higher grades?
  9. I went to Staples today and picked up two of the Better Binders. Their supplies were low, so if you plan on getting some, I'd get there soon.
  10. Total newbie question here. So, with MEP do you just print the pages off of the website? There's no books or anything to buy? And did you do reception or just start with year one?
  11. This might be a fun website to explore together. http://airandspace.si.edu/ceps/etp/etp.htm It has some great pictures.
  12. This sounds like an awesome year. I know this is the WTM forum, but sometimes, WTM isn't always a fit, for either a child, a year, or a family. Taking a year off doesn't mean you don't get to come back. And yes, it's scary! I'm just starting with a Ker and I'm already stressed about rigorousness and four year cycles and things, and the more I read, the more I think that any program needs to be adapted so it works for the family. It shouldn't be the other way around. Do not sacrifice your family to a teaching philosophy.
  13. Is BF's American History narrative going to be providential in nature?
  14. Artistic Pursuits does art and art history together. And you can buy a supply pack that includes everything you need for the whole year's curriculum. http://artisticpursuits.com/
  15. I got the Math Bingo, Time Bingo, an illustrated copy of Aesop's Fables, some packs of stickers (so he can mark his best letter or word in his handwriting practice), a few puzzles, and a 4-hole organizer caddy to keep art supplies organized. I love the $1 section at Target!
  16. You might want to search for posters for different major topics. I can see one on vikings, a medieval one, Islam, a map of the explorers, and a poster of the Globe theater, for example. You really get into the story part in the second book, so it is much more difficult to find a few images that encapsulate the year very well.
  17. Thanks. I admit I'm a bit of a Pinterest junkie. There's just so many homeschooling ideas out there, and I have absolutely no ability to follow a curriculum as written. :001_smile:
  18. I love the idea of nature journaling, and it is something I want to implement with my son. I've been collecting a lot of ideas on Pinterest if you want to look through them. http://pinterest.com/emmanadine/homeschool-nature-journal/
  19. Those of you using BFSU with a kinder, how are you scheduling it? I've seen people doing everything from one lesson a week, with 4-5 times a week doing something on the topic, to one lesson a month and taking three years to go through the book.
  20. I got mine, and it is gorgeous. I can't wait to read it with my son.
