Zinc lozenges always work for me, IF the cold is starting in the throat. If it starts as a runny nose, it doesn't work.

Update: Review in OP: Eyeglasses from Zenni Optical = FAST and CHEAP
mellifera33 replied to Lanny's topic in The Chat Board
Every time I see someone rave about Zenni I mumble under my breath about their lack of prism lenses--but I just checked and they DO make prism lenses now! Woohoo!- 31 replies

urgent advice: fed allergen at an event? WWYD?
mellifera33 replied to 38carrots's topic in The Chat Board
I'm not sure about refunds and such, but I'd want to keep a really close eye on your daughter. If my daughter has an allergic reaction with the description you gave, her allergist wants her to receive epinephrine and go to the er.- 73 replies

s/o Spending money on curriculum
mellifera33 replied to Jess4879's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Things I would buy again: Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing manual. Magic. Rod and Staff math. Basic, old-fashioned, and works for my oldest. Dancing Bears reading. My oldest loves the irreverent sentences and stories--he actually enjoys the curriculum. Liberty's Kids DVDs. The kids love it. I would listen to an Open Yale lecture about the American revolution at night, and the kids would watch LK the next day, and I was impressed by all the historical facts packed into LK. SOTW audio. The kids beg to listen to this in the car. Stealth history. I Speak Latin. My kids love the physical aspect and the games. Simon dicit is a hit. :) Things I wouldn't buy again: Atelier. Good program, but much too expensive. Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding. Great program. Amazing program. I just can't make it work here. Evan Moor History Pockets. My kids just don't get into this kind of thing. -
Anyone own Gamewright's Horse Show game? Missing a card.
mellifera33 replied to MercyA's topic in The Chat Board
You could also post on board game geek. Someone there will know the game and help you out. And you will leave with a list of new games to buy. -
I've been waiting with great anticipation to turn into my mother. Alas, I've not reached her level of kindness, humor, and productivity.

I can see craft stores carrying Christmas supplies early--I've been working on handmade Christmas gifts for about a month now. I vowed that this year I wouldn't be scrambling to finish projects at noon on Christmas Eve.

I didn't know about it until this morning. We have a family party on Sat, but the host lives in an area where the power goes out every wind storm, and tends to stay out for days. We'll see if it goes on.

Yoga pants are the homeschool mom uniform in this area, so I wondered how this thread would go over on a homeschool board. I'll take yoga pants over denim jumpers any day.

I'll say it. In our area, Target employees are pleasant, and Wal-Mart employees are surly. It even held true for a couple I knew--friendly husband worked at Target, grumpy wife worked at Wal-Mart. Company culture is determined by more than just wages. I have worked at minimum wage jobs where everyone hated it (food service), and minimum wage jobs where the employees loved working there and it showed (bookstore). SaveSave

Ok so what is with this clown hysteria?

If you're going to mess with someone---a hunter doesn't seem like a good target. :confused1: -
Someone explain to me why unschooling isn't homescooling?
mellifera33 replied to poppy's topic in The Chat Board
I love talking curriculum, but I've learned to feel out the landscape before I get too deep--I've had a few instances where I naively answered a question about curric with a long list of everything we use only to get the "well, we unschool." And then hear about how curriculum kills creativity, is inherently coersive, etc. Now if someone I don't know well asks me what we use, I give a noncommittal "a bit of this, a bit of that...and you?" before talking currics. -

Ok so what is with this clown hysteria?
mellifera33 replied to SparklyUnicorn's topic in The Chat Board
Yup, Insane Clown Posse groupies. They were meeting at the park across the street from the state psychiatric hospital. :confused1: SaveSave -

mellifera33 replied to SparklyUnicorn's topic in The Chat Board
We've had clown sightings in our area, and some school closures, but while they were initially reported as clown threats, it looks like it was unrelated. But we're in a clown-heavy area in general. For several years it's been common knowledge to avoid a particular park after dark because it's inhabited by juggalos. -
I'm no expert, but I sometimes needle felt with fiber left over from spinning yarn. The fiber assortments from the site you listed look like a good way to start--I usually buy my fiber for a bit less $ per ounce, but I'm buying large quantities of one type of fiber, not an assortment. Needle felting is fun. If you feel like you've messed up, you can just plop a new batch of fiber on top and fix it. Be careful of your fingers. The multi-needle holder is a good idea for getting a rough shape-holding one little needle is hard on my hands so the handle on the tool is helpful.

This thread is cracking me up. While I love the "Go Away" doormat, my dh is also a nice guy and would probably veto it. I think he might go for something like this.

Completely OT Vent: LuLaRoe stuff is hideous
mellifera33 replied to StephanieZ's topic in The Chat Board
My fashion sense is awful, admittedly, but I went to the site and liked what I saw. :001_rolleyes: I have a terrible time finding shirts that strike the right balance between spilling the books right out the top vs. strangling me with a tight, high neck, and these look like they would work for me. I don't really dig the sunflower patterns and such, but the solids and stripes seem nice. -
Maybe I spend too much time here? (kind of funny)
mellifera33 replied to Dmmetler's topic in The Chat Board
Ha! You're not the only one dreaming about this board--last night I dreamed I found a roast in the fridge that was a day past the "sell-by" date, and I was planning on asking the Hive if they would eat it! And then I had to ponder a while how boring my life must be if the most exciting thing my brain can come up with to dream about is spoiled meat.- 10 replies

Dapple Grey Stallion. Gryffindor. Pearwood with unicorn hair. I think I'm more of a Hufflepuff, but I guess the hat doesn't lie. Lol.

I had forgotten how bad some high school bands can be!
mellifera33 replied to FaithManor's topic in The Chat Board
My college (!) band got horribly lost in a piece during a performance tour. The conductor had to stop us and start over. Most embarrassing moment ever. -
