  1. One of the pundits slips and gives an honest opinon about someone regarded as sacrosanct by the party powers that be-Skull and Bones ...google it and be amazed .
  2. Well I find it very hard to believe that he was seriously supporting Hillary Clinton in the first place as these two women are divergent on almost every issue that is important to voters. There is no overlap on any position whatsoever. If you look at the issues there is no reason that a person who would vote for Hillary Clintonwould vote for Sarah Palin as it makes no sense to hold two contradictory belief systems at the same time unless you are operating on the most cynical sort of identity politics.BTW I am a Dem. in the interest of full disclosure here.
  3. I marched in Washington twice as a state representative . Have voted in every election since I was able both federal, state and city elections. I volunteered the first time for President Clinton.I actually served as precinct captain last election and will supervise the new person in this election in any way he/she needs to be effective. I love politics and believe strongly that serving as a volunteer in any capacity changes the way you evaluate issues and candidates forever. While walking door to door last election I met some amazing people and made many friends that I keep up with today. It is not all fame and glory though, I also witnessed a drunk naked dude dragging a mattress down the hill across from the library at 8 am on a Sunday but that is whole 'nother post...really it was unpleasant. :ack2: I know I served honorably as I had two people removed from the polling place -one from each major party for violating federal election laws-how many unpaid positions let you see in the span of 2 weeks both of these things???It is great-volunteer-you will learn a great deal and your time and efforts will be appreciated. Take dark sunglasses if you plan on walking door to door-just in case...If you want to hone your critical thinking skills and oratory volunteer to work the phones for an afternoon. You might be called names by a testy person but again a learning opportunity. If you think you need a great deal of training to volunteer know there are many different areas in which a campaign can certainly utilize your talents. Look online at your candidate's web page and there should be a link to sign up to volunteer your time. If not google your state headquarters for your party there should be links there as well. By all means vote!
  4. I would say that in all honesty being a parent myself two concerns come to mind...First and most important as regards the VP a newborn with special needs is a huge commitment of both emotional and physical energy. Secondly , caring for a young lady not even graduated from high school and her new baby and marriage to a very young man is another huge drain on one's physical and mental energy -she cannot serve two masters so to speak. I really think it is a sad commentary on a troubling pattern in our society that we always put personal achievement /employment before family needs. This is just another manifestation of the problem as I see it. I hope that young lady has been getting folic acid via diet and prenatal vitamins so she has a better chance at a healthy baby. She is so young . I am against abstinence only education but feel strongly that this is an argument for both solid values based education and scientific education to reduce the incidence of young/poor women becoming pregnant before they are ready. As a devoted Democrat who has volunteered for years in many capacities I am truly sad to hear this .

  7. Oh dear why do these things always seem to happen on a holiday???I would definitely take her in for a thorough irrigation of the wound and for a booster if need be. The risk of infection is a real concern. Tetanus risk is not the rust per se but in the soil etc...We had to do this recently and have adopted the mantra thatif someone vomits, needs a tetanus booster or is otherwise excreting excessive anything it is a holiday!! I hope the little cutie is ok and that urgent care is open. The ER is always full of drunks/ meth addicts here on holidays...we call it the knife and gun club.
  8. I buy mine at Whole Foods /Wild Oats in a box usually in the "health' sections although a local grocer carries it as well in the health food section. I use box cake mix by DHines and use the egg replacer in their recipe for a 13by 9 cake as the layered cakes do not come out of the pans well with the egg replacer. It is great to have for our egg free kiddos.I also add a tsp of vanilla for extra flavor because the eggs add richness notably absent from the recipe made with egg replacer. Be sure you use a fork to really beat the heck out of the powder and water mixture or else the texture is gummy. Happy Bday to your little one
  9. I have always been respectful of the Republican ideal of fiscal responsiblity and support for individual choice in education including private school vouchers and home education. I am a devoted supporter of Obama /Biden .
  10. http://www.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Barack_Obama_Gun_Control.htm Obama does not want to dismantle the Bill of Rights. I am a supporter of the right to bear arms and a democrat....Here is a link to his voting record and public statements on the issue.
  11. You are being honest I appreciate that. I consider the position that education does not speak to you to be very tellng as to why this candidate is appealing.
  12. I think being an attorney and teaching at a top ranked law school is a better education than a degree in mass com. Maybe you do not agree about a law degree and the difficulty of obtaining said degree but let me say it was hard. I know.
  13. I am surprised at the assumption that this woman is qualified to take over if anything should happen to Senator Mccain. She was a communications major prior to becoming mayor and Governor. Not sufficient for me.Not even close. I am stunned that her gender and pro life position(for the "innocent") is enough to support this nominee. http://www.ontheissues.org/Sarah_Palin.htm As regards foreign policy I am convinced that this candidate has not the education or experience to handle a crisis with Pakistan (Musharrif is not our ally) http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-pakistan-usaug19,0,7346165.story or heaven forbid Russia...I am clearly not a social conservative but the unquestioning support shown here with no idea what her positions are on any domestic policy save that of the few social issues is just breathtaking to me.

  17. A suggestion to this poster and others who state they "do not want to start a debate but..."then inflammatory ,divisive, partisan rhetoric follows . I am not buying it . It is a means to post inflammatory generally unfounded"facts" from a muckraking type of organization. I do not consider this to be contributing to intelligent, thoughtful discussion of the pertinent issues facing the voting public. By all means exercise your First Amendment rights but please do not be disappointed when the level of discourse being utilized does not change anyone 's mind regarding who is best suited for the highest office in our country.
  18. http://books.google.com/books?id=9mXKGwAACAAJ&dq=inauthor:Jacques+inauthor:Barzun I love this book and found it to be extraordinarily concise and instructive. I also read From Dawn to Decadence last summer and it really made me pause to be thankful for my Jesuit education. Not one name or concept was unfamiliar to me because of the outstanding profs at Creighton U.Yes I did the work and took more than a full load each semester but I must say this book was a comprehensive revisiting of every course I took at CU. I often stop now as I am educating dd and say a prayer of thanks for those that taught me to think about the ideas that have shaped Western civilization. I wonder if dd will ever appreciate hour long discussions about personhood and the issue of slavery...her eyes tend to glaze over but I remain optimistic that one day she will appreciate socratic method.
  19. It is part of the Chi rho symbol referencing the Christ in Greek . It is a beautiful sign of reverence. http://www.rochester.edu/college/rel/symbols/chiro.html
  20. I could not be more pleased with this choice !Extensive foreign policy experience, progressive on domestic issues and meaner than a junkyard dog when needed.
  21. Is there any chance that there is a type of substance abuse happening or some other type of problem that your dd might equate with shame ??I aonly ask as we are living this nightmare with my sibling same behaviour as your dd but I happen to know that behind the scenes there is cocaine/alcohol involved as well. I am so sorry that your family is faced with this but as a human being with a great deal of professional experience as well, I must raise this question for your consideration of the issues. Best of luck with this very painful situation.
  22. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A10411-2005Apr22.html Does this bring any clarity here? It is clearly an attempt to pander to single issue voters. I am also a single issue voter on another life issue -one that I am inflexible on so I do understand where you are coming from just please recognize that you are being manipulated with half truths regarding what this legislation would accomplish. Be pro life unabashedly if that is your belief and for any reason you choose -not because these schmucks want your vote...and will say anything to get it.
  23. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/116/4/e576'>http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/116/4/e576 Food for thought -this legislation is about many things ...power, money , malpractice , control and sadly, last of all about those who would be affected by it-woman and child. Pandering for votes under the guise of morality is not new I am just amazed that it still works. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/116/4/e576
