  1. Hives possibly???any new food? Egg peanuts shellfish ?? New laundry soap??? Give a dose of benadryl matched to her weight-see if the rash abates . If not it is most certainly a sign of viral or bacterial illness. It could also be fifths disease common not too nasty but I would not expose other kids without knowing for sure because it could be a very serious illness.Only when there is a bday party!!! I know its happened here as well-but I would not risk giving the other kids and their families a disease. Sure sounds like allergy I hope the little one is doing ok see if her throat is red or streaky inside as well-strep is going around here like mad.
  2. Glad to be of help -now I must go stitch as I have 3 projects in progress that demand some effort from this ol gal. 28 count linen is a whole nother world and by gosh it will not defeat me. I am truly delighted to have been able to find something that will work for you. Nordic needle is truly dangerous and their catalogues are the Rainbow Resource of needlework-I lose all restraint when I get their printed catalogue, on the up side dd is learning to love needlework and at 12 distractions are welcome.
  3. http://www.amazon.com/Cross-Stitch-Designs-India-Phillipson/dp/1861083165/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206574382&sr=1-1 Dear lady I have this book -there is an indian elephant for your project. I have way too many cross stitch books this is evidence. Hope this will work. Stitch away!
  4. http://http://www.nordicneedle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=NN&Product_Code=4502 I just finished this -ha -I did start the hanky pysanky ukranian egg pattern one in the same section. A while ago I inquired as to whether any other people were stitchers and noted that several were . Here is the link to where I have found unusual, challenging and utterly fabulous patterns and threads that really help me to relax this time of year . Thought you might be interested in these. This multiplication table is just too perfect...Find a quiet place and relax.
  5. Funny you should ask-I have been waiting for this query for years! John Locke, de Toqueville, John Rawls, John Stuart Mill , Immanuel Kant are great philosophers to begin with . Read their writing not summaries or surveys-the original work only. If you can read these abstract, demanding texts and take notes essentially making the concepts elucidated clear, you can easily practice law. I was a philosophy major , went to grad school then law school and worked full time during law school which was a breeze after reading Hegel etc. I do not think political science courses are helpful at all. This is often what non lawyers think will be useful for those wishing to attend law school . Read , read and read some more. If the young person masters the best writers in the liberal arts and can digest complex ideas with ease then they are well prepared. In my class those with English degrees were downright dangerous and threw the curve only surpassed by ...the philosophy majors. Seriously, it is all about reading well and being able to teach yourself due to the use of the Socratic method as the main instruction mode. If you dare to answer a query the prof will only snort , smile and clean the floor with your ego. It works generally. I hope this helps.
  6. Cheap vodka is the best cleans like nothing else. I do not drink for many reasons and in my ignorance used my dh bottle of grey goose for this purpose. He gently asked me to confer with him prior to touching any of the liqour again if it is to be used for cleaning . It really works beautifully though.
  7. Nope-anything else will become rancid and ruin the wood. I would not use anything but mineral oil
  8. http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven's_Progressive_Matrices Do not use the Wechsler the ceilings are too low and they are not designed to capture giftedness. Ravens are ok but the old stanford binet is the gold standard by those who work in the field . Look at the info at the Belin Blank center online and see if there is more information there. Also try http://www.hoagiesgifted.comhope this is helpful. I would have lost my mind without Hoagies gifted to steer me through the hogwash I was mired in by dd's former school. Still angry? You betcha. Eternally grateful for SWB and her book to bring me out of the muck? Absolutely. Best of luck and if your little man is learning and happy leave well enough alone the numbers are just not that helpful. It still takes a bit of trial and error to find the right amount of challenge.
  9. So glad you asked-wish I had done so last year while making this decision...Jacobs is perfect after 6b in fact NEM by singapore grade 7 was so much more difficult and required a great deal more assistance from the teacher, the teacher who is a lawyer because she is not great at math...go with Jacobs it is clear, concise, covers coordinate graphs and will not give you a headache. NEM did not go so well and we switched happily to Jacobs and it works for both the math talented dd and math impaired momma-teacher
  10. Dear gothicgyrl ,Thank you for being the voice of reason . You always urge people to check the facts, sit back and reflect on hot button issues prior to coming to what is almost always a hasty conclusion based on on a appeal to authority. I am glad you posted this case . How very sad for those poor kids.
  11. Hello there-I do not know if this is a possibility but many people cannot use neosporin without having an allergic reaction even after using it for years. Try using hydrogen peroxide to clean it .this will smart a bit but will likely clean the holes thoroughly. Use Bacitraicin ointment in a day or so as this is better than neosporin in terms of irritation and bacteria killing. I hope your ears improve-I had the same deal last summer and my dermatologist suggested the regimen and it worked for me.
  12. Great job and well done from the other side of the river. I was disturbed that this very important issue got so little coverage on local news but Rosenblatt stadium is of monumental importance -10 minutes of the news last night and very little or no coverage about this issue. I felt that all the families in the World Herald and in the legislature were well versed, humble and respectful to the other viewpoints. Very impressive and well done to all!I can only hope that they decide to vote with intelligence and integrity rather than cater to what seems to be a panic approach to a problem that does not exist. Over here, across the river, we have a flurry of regulations, testing and must submit a complete schedule and lists of materials-it is a huge pain and guess what-if people are not going to educate their dc or say they are hsing only to abuse the poor children its going to happen regardless of the regulations.Sadly, the young lady who was allegedly hsed nearby and was only kept home so her stepdad could abuse her(Tracey Dyess case) is serving a lengthy prison sentence and living with her own horrible deeds against her sibs-would regulations have prevented that tragedy???Nope sadly I do not know the answers but would assert that regulations regarding subject matter , mandatory testing etc will not protect little ones from harm at all. Peace to you and best of luck as you fight to maintain your freedom to hschool in Ne.
  13. Well, I rest my case .To point out a link that seeks to villify, distort and demean Catholics shows thatyou seek not understanding but a bully pulpit. I am sad that you see the world in absolute terms.
  14. In regard to the comment about linking Catholics and paganism being at best an insult, at worst prejucicial -Thanks for your courage . As a fellow human being and Catholic Christian I have grown weary of even responding to misinformed or just plain old disrespectful comments regarding not only Catholicism but Mormonism and Islam as well. There is a big difference between a geniune question regarding practices and beliefs and a derogatory comment . It is rare to find the latter here but it is a good thing to call it what it is-bigotry and ignorance.
  15. I am sorry. I have lived through losing 2 beloved family members to depression coupled with premature dismissal from the hospital. If you can, please read Darkness Visible by William Styron. His memoir helped me the tiniest bit to comprehend what their lives were like with this disease. It breaks my heart to see more and more people having to face this. Peace to you and yours .
  16. http://worldcat.orgThis little website permits you to enter your zip search by title author or subject and then searches all the libraries near you for the text etc even if the search leads across the pond /UK . This is inter library loan on steroids. If your library charges no fee for interlibraryloans this enables you to search from your house on your time and then take the list of requests titles etc to your library. They love me for doing this and I have located some really good stuff-transylvanian cross stitch(who knew?), Fiona MacDonald history books etc. It is just amazing what you can find and gently request from your local library-it is too cool. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have it is a blast for research geeks- yep -that's how we roll.
  17. Dear anj, Yikes, I am sorry . It could be endometriosis ,could be perimenopause, could be something else. I am so glad you are getting checked and I hope all is well. I had this occur last year and had to have a uterine biopsy due to troubling family history with ovarian and uterine cancer on both sides of the family tree. All was well but holy moly that was unpleasant. As it turns out this was a premenopausal blip that persists to the present. I am glad you are checking it out and its likely not anything to be concerned about but better safe than sorry. Best wishes for a simple answer , Elizabeth
  18. Sarah,That piece would be lovely indeed. You have quite a gift for knitting as I recall. I read your blog often and with great interest as I attended Creighton U for both undergrad and law school ,in a previous century...really. That is so scary to consider. I attended law school with Russ Reno's wife . I had just finished my undergrad in philosophy when they came to Omaha so I did not have a chance to take a course from him. I recall the quote from RR that used to be at the top of your blog and have always thought him fascinating. I have done needlepoint for years and recently explored charted berlin work leading to the Bronte sampler in counted cross stitch. I am eager to try crochet as well and plan to do that with dd as she is far more adept than I with visual spatial skills needed to execute the project from a book to these stubborn hands. The Bayeux will find its way into your project list when the time is right. Those two boys are just cute as can be and time moves so quickly. elizabeth
  19. Hello , It is a snowy cold evening here in Iowa and as I was preparing to sit in my stitching chair with a steaming cup of java it seemed timely to ask if there are other stitching mamas /papas out there? The range of subject matter available is amazing and if you are into literature and history, well ,need I say more? My need for "me" time and interest is well met by this hobby and I will not speak of the Bronte and Wordsworth pieces I am working on along with a few others. My stitch stash has grown but most will become gifts for my loved ones. Are there other needlework enthusiasts out there?? What crafts/hobbies do you enjoy?
  20. Your art is beautiful and your daughter is lovely. What you have in abundance is called talent-rock it!!!
