  1. http://www.law.uh.edu/healthlaw/perspectives/2006/(LH)BAIPA.pdf article and links to the law regarding this specific piece of legislation.
  2. http://www.law.uh.edu/healthlaw/perspectives/2006/(LH)BAIPA.pdf For those who are opposed to abortion at all this article is of no moment but for those who believe abortion may be permissable under some circumstances this is a must read article to understand that the legislation in question was uneeded and served only to further push the goal of blocking partial birth abortion procedures and ultimatelyall abortion procedures. Whether you fall on one side or the other or somewhere on the continium- cheap shots by distorting the language of a bill to fit political purposes and or pandering to a voting bloc with outright falsehoods is deplorable and actually undermines the issue in question. It is a crucial issue and deserves far better treatment than a clip and distort treatment complete with video clip level of discussion.
  3. Wow I thought I was the only one who got booted off that board. All I can say is I know I never posted anything uncharitable or even close to controversial. I was definitely not a good fit over there but having read many of the posts by Catholic people here over the past several days on this thread and others -I am in fine company. You are all interesting and above all else-humble- in the best sense of the word.
  4. No answer keys that I am aware of...the texts differ only in the depth accorded to each suset of the subject. I feel that they are adequate without the experiments however I did buy the investigations manual and we read all the experiments as we go through the text because it is important that dd understand the scientific method. It is really tough in this particular subject for me to know when enough is enough with regard to planning-not really my area of strength at all.
  5. Take a look at this text. http://www.cpo.com/tp_fp_textbook.shtml I purchased this for a very capable 8th grade student and we are are not doing many experiments the text is amazing as it integrates the math with the concepts forcing the student to keep up to speed in both areas. It is secular and because I am not a mathy mother I had my math whiz buddy (works for govt) look it over and he said it was solid and thorough. It is very well illustrated as well. I hope this helps as I have struggled for so long to find well written and secular materials . I just looked at your profile ...from one attorney momma to another-I just do not know where my math skilled child acquired her skills!!!
  6. I no longer practice law but believe me it is a wonderful resource especially down the road when it is time to discuss the Bill of Rights and the Constitution generally. Dd wishes desperately I were anything BUT a lawyer as she is not fascinated with learning 1st amendment case law-go figure...I am so very excited for you both what a wonderful journey you are about to embark on!! Best wishes for a peaceful and joy filled year. Just don't become offended if your dd does not find the connection between the commerce clause and the evolution of civil rights to be an endless source of fascination-mine loves math!!!How does that happen??! I explained that mommy does not love math and certainly not higher math and that's why she went to law school instead .She gave me the 1000 yard stare and returned to her book-6 years ago and we are still going strong ,continuing to work together at this despite being two very different people in so many ways.
  7. http://www.hightechhigh.org/schools/HTH/ Take a peek by the right hand side and see what the portfolios look like etc My cousin who is with the foreign service placed her two children there ,having been raised in Brazil for most of their young lives english is their second language. They love it !!! I have read a great deal about Outcome Based Education and what is called Project based education it would appear that this institution avoids much of what is negative about these methods and elavates that which is worthwhile using these approaches. I feel strongly that it really depends on the person implementing the curricula. Having read a book by Dr Jane Healy and related work in the field I remain concerned about form overtaking substance with this approach. Other concerns are really those which only you can examine , ponder and address. You know what is going to be good for your child and I would certainly encourage you seek information from the school and current families enrolled there. So much depends on your pov on computer use and your definition of knowledge. My dear Aunt extols the superiority of this school yet when I elected to share my syllabi for the next year a la TWTM her mouth was agape...major achievement there...I cannot say who she is but think HUGE in the San Diego community and nationally in the field of ....education and government. I wanted to let you know where her bias is as regards the level of her support for this institution. Check it out see if their goals comport with yours for your dc and go from there.
  8. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/04/books/04solzhenitsyn.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin How sad another great writer passed away. I am planning on having dd read Gulag for moderns next year -I hope he found peace.
  9. Au Hasard Balthazar http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060138/plotsummary Beautiful film the kind where you think about it for months afterward-not ok for sensitive child although.
  10. We are both attorneys at law but I am responsible for hsing one precious child and dh practices. We live and work in an old victorian (1865 ) house with steel doors between the two areas providing security and needed silence for both of us to function in such persistent proximity. It has worked out well for hsing as we all "go" to work at the same time and certainly helps us to remain accountable and structured on all fronts.
  11. I would post the same and cannot argue strongly enough for listening to Bill. They did not ,would not, keep my beloved family member long enough for the meds to work-I am not sharing the outcome because I do not want to frighten you. Be your bad mother bear, righteously indignant self-if it is not you to do this -act as if you are a fearsome woman not to be trifled with!!.The proverbial squeaky wheel does get results. I am so sorry you are dealing with a system that treats mental diseases with disregard and those with loved ones so afflicted with utter contempt it is wrong and tragic-I am thinking of you and hoping for the best. I have been there and hurt for you and your family.
  12. Oh noooo!!!I was injured like this when a spring broke in a clock I was repairing . You need to go in the nail matrix could be damaged, you might need a tetanus booster if the flesh was broken and for goodness sake pain meds are perfectly ok...I wish I could sit with you I know how much this hurts-please go in if for no other reason than splinting and pain relief. Best of luck
  13. I saw the film today with dd 11ish and really enjoyed it !!!It is fun and a bit scary with far more suspense than fright. You will enjoy it indeed
  14. http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-et-book5-2008jul05,0,3980465.story I read the book and prefer The Twilight of Amercian Culture by Berman http://www.amazon.com/Twilight-American-Culture-Morris-Berman/dp/039332169X but found the article fascinating in a horrible sort of fashion. Having spent a good part of the year tutoring freshman philosophy students I would say without reservation that things are worse than the author is proposing. I thought others here may wish to read the book and or discuss or not discuss...
  15. Hello there Nadia! Many thanks for the link to these lovely things. I have a dd aged 12 and to find interesting ,colorful and modest (not dowdy) clothing is nigh impossible. I appreciate your follow up and plan to spend some time with dd perusing these skirts. Elizabeth
  16. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3614/is_200507/ai_n14683834/pg_1?tag=artBody;col1 print this and send to the witless manager . I majored in philosophy and helped my local bookstore expand and correctly place materials . Often it is a matter of judgment but on the other hand the superstores do not give much room to the managers about what to sell. Personally, it is offensive and short sighted especially in what might be called the bible belt. Many missionaries do spend a great deal of time learning and teaching their youngsters about the faith of those who are not christian-the goal is conversion but they do not and should not remain ignorant of those they are purportedly serving. The list of books may be just what the manager needs to have a table of world religions-one never knows. Good luck on expanding the horizons and pushing the envelope it may bring wonderful results and an expanded section in the bookshop.
  17. Gosh guys- thanks for the kind words. These boards have been very helpful to me as we transition from one year to the next . I just wanted to share the best of what I had found for this area of study.
  18. http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/mshaw/Revised_Analysis_Sheets%5B.pdf I thought I had read too many posts regarding literary analysis programs with much handwringing and angst. I am sharing what is the backbone for discussing any work of fiction in my little corner of the world. I love these women for putting together this exhaustive list of discussion questions. Chat through this with your student and the book report and/or essay on the work should be a breeze. I hope the link works. I found this while doing my own handwringing and excessive searching for a one stop source for discussing literature/poetry/plays absent concern with form. This subject seems to engender high anxiety ,even moreso if one has a college degree indicating proficiency in the area.... Hope this helps someone here-I get so much from all of you and hope I can do the same.
  19. http://www.theherald-nc.com/160/story/8340.html The other kids survived -sort of...I am aghast that anyone could give credence to this belief system. The worst scars are not the physical ones-PTSD anyone????
  20. http://www.sdcba.org/LRIS/'>http://www.sdcba.org/LRIS/'>http://www.sdcba.org/LRIS/'>http://www.sdcba.org/LRIS/ I would love to advise but am not able to- I can only do so in my state...Hire an attorney and they will determine how to get the test done. Just get in to see one who specializes in Disability. Low Iq alone does not suffice as i said earlier. But she might qualify based on combinations of mental disability . Keep talking to her psychologist though as this is crucial. If you need a referral seek out the local bar -they are usually helpful. I wish you were here this would be easier...Bless your heart for taking on this awesome task. http://www.sdcba.org/LRIS/ These folks should help find an attorney. Best of luck
  21. The waiting period is that long ,as we need more judges-allegedly there is not money in the budget for the needed hires...it is awful to see clients lose their housing or remain near homeless while they wait for a hearing. It is just wrong.
  22. I am a liscensed attorney as is dh we both do this work call your local bar association for a referral-it is complex and the relationaship between IQ and Axis 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to the DSM manual does govern eligibility. Please hire an attorney through the bar association as California is plagued with several sub standard law schools and I would not hire any one without good standing in the bar. Be assure d iq alone does not make or break a case. Call an attorney
  23. http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/07pdf/07-343.pdf You absolutely are missing the meaning of the case by not reading the courts decision and especially the dissent. You might be surprised...
  24. endometriosis or uneven shedding of the lining of the uterus causing the heavy period-see someone else if for no other reason than the MD felt your suffering was not a big enough issue to pursue other causes. Your age, history of menstrual cycle etc all need to be assessed see an ob/gynecologist as this requires the education and experience of the specialty. I had your symptoms and because I am 42 and have a family history of gynecologic problems of the most dire sort I had to have a biopsy from my uterus-all was well but it was the experience I needed to throw away my nicotine delivery devices/filthy cigs...Please see someone if for no other reason than daggummit you hurt and need to feel better. I am sorry that your md is not hearing you on this. Your symptoms are not easily ignored and am sorry to hear that you are having a tough time getting answers. Keep looking.
  25. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200107/myers I will try sharing this article one more time because I think it is that important and worth discussing and thinking about if only to decide the writer has a point or is full of beans. In the context of this list of "classics," I readily spotted several that are worthy of acclaim albeit classic does not spring to mind. I have my opinions regarding the list but having read at least half of them, regret the time wasted on at least 25 of those on the list. This article for me is a call to arms regarding what often passes for serious literature when it is often no more than a literary device, an artifice meant to hide the fact that the novel has no soul. I love books, many genres more authors than one would think but sometimes it is time to call something what it is -horsefeathers. The article posits this far more clearly although not as succinctly as I have. My problem is never with content insofar as it may or may not be objectionable to some but rather with the disingenousness and artificial clap trap passing for genius. For instance, no punctuation, ooh revolutionary-please...flame away if you feel so inclined or agree that this is long overdue regardless I sure welcome a chance to hear what the people here have to say about literature. What makes a work canonical? Revolutionary? Genius? Or to phrase it indelicately what ever happened to calling it as we see it regardless of what the critics or profs may assert? When did the reading public give up the right to call... .... well you know.
