  1. That's just a lot to handle at once. So sorry, Peela. I'll be praying for you. :grouphug:
  2. Very sorry for your loss, but so glad she didn't suffer longer with her cancer. Praying for you and your family! :grouphug::grouphug:
  3. Nuts! I would be running out of the room as well!
  4. Sounds like a very generous resolution, Sue! Hope you love the new teacher. You'll have to let us know. :001_smile:
  5. Last week there was an article in the Wall Street Journal stating that SAT scores were lower than ever. Perhaps that's why. They will just magically be "ready".
  6. I have an apple bread recipe that is delicious. It's just raw apples and they work great. I'm sure it would be the same for cinnamon rolls. http://www.plantoeat.com/recipes/106059
  7. We took classes last year too and also had a different teacher the second semester. I was really nervous about that but she turned out to be VERY good (Mrs. Iverson). The whole system, software, etc is completely different this year and much more extensive than last year. It's call Haiku and it is set up for keeping track of everything, communicating, etc. It's working really well and we've had no errors at all.
  8. How sad! I have a friend in her 40's the just went back to nursing school and finished. The reason she changed her major back when she was in college the first time was... chemistry. It was very hard to go back later, but she always felt that was what she was supposed to do originally. Why not take some of the other courses that may help and then try that one again? Even a different teacher can make a difference AND there's always tutoring (most colleges offer) that can get you through a hard course. i hate to see her give up her dreams.
  9. We've done labs in the past by ordering kits from Home Science Tools to go with certain textbooks (Apologia), etc. This year, we have about 7 of us in our area who have signed up for the Lab Intensive that is coming to our state (1 1/2 hour a way but it looked worth it) from Landry Academy (see above link). We signed up when the discount was 50% off so it was $110. For that price, I couldn't even buy all the specimens for all that they are doing. It's a 2 day intensive lab covering even things from college anatomy classes. I'm thinking it should take care of 2 lab credits. You could see if there is one coming to your area. The current discount (I think 40% ends soon). Also sometimes, there are local programs. Our science museum offers labs to homeschoolers. If you check with your support group, they may know of resources like that. We also have a nauture preserve that offers labs. Our homeschool group took the initiative to contact them about working with homescoolers and they set up things based on need.
  10. We used to eat at the round kitchen table (6 of us), but for the last several years we have been eating in the dining room. Last year we got rid of our 25 year old table and got a new one that seats 8. I love the feeling of eating in there.
  11. They use the mic often both in critical thinking and in greek.
  12. I understand. Money is always an issue here too. We don't have much of it. As I said before, we had only one small snag and it was taken care of as soon as I mentioned it. I guess I will go into detail as to why these classes have been so amazing for us so that there will be a more detailed review for people to see. I have been sitting in on every class so I know exactly how things are going. Ds has 4 classes and every teacher has been wonderful. The critical thinking teacher is an attorney who has worked on capitol hill and has the class discussing and thinking DEEPLY (great for ds - he loves this). Most of the class has been hashing through things that aren't as they seem, learning all about if-then statements, making assumptions, etc. The students love giving their points of view. I had covered critical thinking with my older 3, but never like this. The biology teacher is just excellent in every way. She is taking a difficult subject and making it doable. She hands out notes that the students have to use as they follow along with her lecture, filling in the blanks. This was really fantastic for ds because his biggest struggle has been with writing quickly. Note-taking has often been overwhelming for him. This was the perfect transition. She uses video, great labs and her own enthusiasm to make biology come alive. His English teacher is also quite gifted. Her love of literature and poetry comes out in every class. Along with a poetry unit right now, she is taking the class through a "grammar boot camp" that is also perfect for us. My mom passed away last year and was sick prior to that so grammar was an area that we had put on the back burner. This boot camp is taking ds through a lot very quickly... just in time to use it for the foreign language class. This had been a huge concern for me and it's just all falling into place. Later in the year, he will be writing more as well as reading and discussing a lot of great literature. The last class is Biblical Greek. Ds did not want to take Spanish so we had opted for this. The teacher is a grad student majoring in ancient languages and she is just excellent! Again, I couldn't have chosen anyone better. She has the students using the mic a lot to pronounce and read the language already. No one feels bad if they mess up. She has a very easy way about her, but we are learning so much (I've always wanted to learn the biblical languages so I'm trying to learn it along with ds although he is picking it up a lot faster). So that is my first-hand view. Ds is working harder than he's ever worked and there are no complaints from him whatsoever. Last year, he never would have wanted to work in the evenings or on weekends. This year, he doesn't mind at all if he needs to work on something "after hours". I'm happy because I feel we are off to a great start for high school and will be well-prepared for college. We signed up early when there was a substantial discount, but even if we hadn't, these classes are worth every penny. It has been a huge answer to prayer for us.
  13. If they have one new waiter that isn't up to par, you wouldn't go back? Even my very favorite places have messed up... cold potatoes or the wrong drink order, etc. If I'm not perfect myself, I don't expect others to be. I just expect it to be taken care of when a mistake is made. There is no perfect business, no perfect church, no perfect family. Businesses, like any social organization, are made up of people and people make mistakes.
  14. This is sad to me. There was a problem and Mr. Landry himself is following up on it in an attempt to resolve things. To me, that is impressive. It's the same when I go to a restaurant or deal with any other business. I don't expect any place to be perfect. To me, it's the true test of a manager/business when they have to deal with the inevitable problem because there WILL be problems. If we are out to eat and there is an issue, I will ask for the manager. If the manager goes out of his/her way to resolve the issue, I can leave there even more impressed. If they shrug and do nothing, I will never be back and at that point, I may talk about it.
  15. Ds has four classes. Each teacher handles things a little differently, but all 4 give homework at the end of each class. When it's listed on the website varies a little from teacher to teacher. One requires work to be turned in 2 days before class (so that she can check it over and discuss problems that seem to be common to the class) and the others require it before class time or at midnight the night before. I'm usually around, so I can make sure the homework is written down correctly, but it will be listed on the website in most instances. We have one teacher that only lists what is to be turned in so it's especially important to be sure to hear (and see on the whiteboard) the end of class to get all of the homework. I would think that private/public schools would be similar. I know when I was in school, I was responsible for writing down the assignments. There are check marks next to the drop boxes when the work has been turned in so that is a good way to double check. Since this is the first year of high school for ds, I am on the class pages often checking to be sure that all is well. Ds is working hard, but learning a lot. It's been really good for him. Hope you can get everything running smoothly, Sue. Ds 20 had some trouble like this when he started college. No trouble at SPC when he dual enrolled at all, but for some reason, it hit him when he went to his four year college. He would just miss things. He would get A's on everything and then a 0 on something that he was completely unaware of (he's a bit of an absent-minded professor, very smart but not always tuned in). He actually did this in some of his very favorite classes. He did realize his weakness and he made corrections, but I'm really hoping that by getting used to these things in high school, ds 15 can avoid the whole problem.
  16. Ds has 4 Landry classes and we have had a great experience so far. In fact, I've been really impressed by the organization and the new Haiku system that we can use to check to see homework, test dates, etc for each class. Have you been checking your class page regularly to see when things are due? Homework that is turned in has a dropbox on this page and dates are shown for tests, etc. Some classes have separate pages for each week (usually listed on the left). Also, anytime you have a problem, you can call Greg Landry himself. I have seen him bend over backwards to make things right for people. We had a small snag at the beginning that was handled immediately. We have quite a group of us in my area now and it's been going VERY well. We plan on continuing throughout high school. I hope it all works out for you, Sue!
  17. Two in the last 2 weeks. Tonight we were watching our very last DVD (since we switched to instant only due to the price increase), ds was gone with the youth group and dh had a night alone. Sure enough, we got 3/4 of the way through the movie and it won't play. I sent dh to Redbox. Very irritating and now it makes me glad we went to instant only. Not worth the hassle.
