  1. I finished 65) Death Comes to Pemberly by PD James which I enjoyed. Good comforting read for Pride and Prejudice fans. Last weekend dd and I watched "Lost in Austin" a made for TV adaption where a modern fan switches places with Elizabeth. It has been around for awhile but I have never managed to watch all four parts. Just managed the last 3 this time but saw the ending. ;) It was great for a girly day with dd and PD James was a perfect follow up.
  2. There are three TOPS units on the NASA education website for free. That would probably be a good place to start.
  3. All I can say is I understand the need the need to prepare for everything when living overseas. To be honest I had it in the US when my dc were your dds age. I didn't want to miss a thing. I also love box days a bit too much. ;) I returned with a huge stack of stuff in my paid for extra bags this year with two kids gently reminding me not to expect them to get that all done in one year. Pretty much covered high school. I buy extra just in case.....I resisted one book (out of stock so I couldn't buy it) and am considering the PDF just in case.
  4. Not sure what the pp answer will be but for me the numbing was a sign that I had pretty serious back problems. I didn't go to the doctor at that stage and six months later had to have back surgery. Honestly doubt that the outcome would have changed but I do wonder.
  5. You did nothing wrong. I do think it has something to do with our mom's generation. I can totally imagine mine saying the exact same thing! Have a great day Saturday!
  6. No great advice because I have my own struggles with ds and algebra but I was wondering do you have the full solutions manual or the teacher key for the abeka? Things here have improved greatly with the full solutions. Bought cheap on ebay. This might help finish this year. For Prof B I think the online is vastly different from the books. I have never used online but dd did do the first Power Algebra book. She loved it. But it was a lot of problems and writing. Ds will not do it and we did try.
  7. My ds has been having the same problems. Driving me nuts! The current method which is showing signs of working is doing the book work with complete access to a solution manual with complete every single step solutions. After he works through the assigned questions he takes the quiz and we move on. He is finally making an effort to write some work down and is trying to be neat. I think he has decided that I might be right because his scores are improving.
  8. Unfortunately these are just the books that I intend to read soon. Checked out of library etc. I feel guilty everytime I look at them. So many books so little time.:)
  9. I vote for GH. I got to watch for a total of one day while in the States. Lucy is back. She was always my favorite. I never got the whole L and L thing. Watched Y and R then instead.
  10. We went in February to Winter Haven. No problem for our family of four. I would call. They were SO home ed friendly. An employee to greet home ed and get us in right line etc. Slow day with an empty park and they still had that employee.
  11. I lived near Ft. Myers when young. I loved it and have always missed it. We left when I was 10. I have been back a few times. I think there are some good housing possibilities within a half hour of the airport(Cape Coral would fit that I think--not where we lived) and FL is home ed friendly.
  12. I haven't had a chance to read the first one yet so I refuse to read this beyond the first couple of sentences! My first thought was maybe she was already ill when this one was published so trying to resolve a few things maybe? Back when you first recommended her I read a few articles and I remember one saying that there is quite a bit of foreshadowing that never wraps up. Apparently the series was planned over either 7 or 9 books. I just moved it towards the top of my pile earlier today. Of course my pile is about 20 books high so not sure what that means in terms of when it will be read. Dd is pestering me to read a few books first to see if she will like them! I am glad she wants me to before someone lectures me.
  13. Just wow! Yep my sorority days are long past but really glad she isn't one of my "sisters". First thing I did was check which house. Obviously some habits don't end.
  14. Great news!!!!! I am so happy that he is home!
  15. You tempted me to go and have a look at the Timberdoodle website. It does look tempting and schedules really help especially the first year! With littles and a new baby you will need them! I wasn't sure exactly which years you are planning on. Both in one grade or two separate bundles. The only things we have specifically used are some of the building thinking skills products which were great. I would search threads for peoples opinions on TT(teaching textbooks) and the rest. I will add my ds would love that curriculum. I feel like I should order it for him!
  16. Mapping yes. Really helpful. I love the SL fold up map. For twentieth century really important in order to keep things straight. We map all sorts of things.;) We were great about the SL book of time whem they were little. Now it happens occasionally. Sort of a rainy day activity. I would make my own. One century on ten pages is going to get crowded.imo
  17. Congratulations! I hope you are feeling better soon.
  18. We normally read SL differently from the schedule. Remember we have not done this core but normally many of the books are pretty high interest. This is how I would envision my dd doing this course. She would do the Apologetics and the History daily. Reading the assignments but some of the historical fiction might be completed early.;) The literature portion would be read in the SL order but dd would be reading them at the start of the sceduled times--normally finishing early. Poetry as assigned. A reasonable number of these books are high interest and should go quickly which normally creates a bit of free time. She might want to read a few over the summer if she is worried.
  19. A few more ideas for your next library trip. Laura Berenson -- A pedigree to die for is the first --Enjoyable series based around dog shows. Lillian Jackson Braun -- The Cat who........--I love this series. It has been around a long time so just start with the earliest you can find. Parnell Hall -- The Puzzle Lady series -- If your dd likes crosswords. Not complicated but quick fun reads. CS Harris -- What Angels Fear -- Sebastian St.Cyr mysteries -- Set in England around 1800. I have only read the first but great characters and good mystery. The other books I have suggested are fun mysteries this is mors quality. This list is more variety in hopes that your library will have something on the list. None are anywhere near Christie standards but fairly common at libraries.
  20. I would recommend reading The Well Trained Mind before you began. Not just because of this board but also because so many of my real life friends have found their path for home ed there -- none do the same things but our inspiration started there.;) I no longer live in the US but have very fond memories of Timberdoodle. Great stuff. Never bought a package. I would also ask for a Rainbow Resource Catalog. Great way to see what is out there. Huge -- 1400 plus pages and fair prices. A good point to start.
  21. Anna Katherine Green mysteries are availiable on Kindles for free. I read that this is where AC got the idea for Miss Marple. Dd and I have read and enjoyed a few of these. Not really locked room but Alan Bradley's Flavia books starting with "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" are great and very clean. Dd loves these and I really enjoyed the first one.
  22. Just finished #64 The Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Potzsch. It was my free Amazon prime book. Not sure if I would have persisted past the first few pages if it didn't feel like I have to read those prime books or wasting my money. That being said I really liked it. Looking forward to part 2 "The Dark Monk". I already checked it out but can't start it until I get several other books done. Going to start Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James on my kindle. I need to read it before it disappears! Really looking forward to it. I am also going to start part 3 of 1Q84. I do want to see how it ends but I am less then excited at the thought of a part 4. Now for a serious question -- how are you going to "count" 1q84 on your reading lists? I had been planning to count it as 1 book for all three parts but I looked at goodreads and discovered all sorts of variations. The one that attracted me was using part 1 and 2 as one book because the cover is the copy I read. Nothing matches my part 3. Anyway how do you plan to list this chunky book on your 52 books list?
  23. Robin, I hope your new copy arrives soon. So dissappointing! As soon as I read your post I grabbed my copy of part three, separate book, and made sure it had all it's pages. I finished Nora Robert's Sacred Sins. Quite good, not sure that I ever read that one. I will read the second one soon. I am trying to finish The Hangman's Daughter. It is my Prime leading library book from March. I need to finish it so I don't miss my April selection.
