  1. I really need science activities that we can successfully do at home (emphasis on success! Too many times we get all of the supplies only to have the activity fail.). Recommend your favorite TOPS Science.
  2. I am looking to purchase one or the other, or maybe some of both. The way we tend to do science around here (and history too) is to throw ourselves into a study for 4-6 weeks, then switch to something else. Right now I am knee-deep in planning. Ideally I'd like to have 3-4 different science avenues to choose from. Oh, and the kids are 8 & 10. TOPS: We have dabbled with Lentil Science in the past (the k-3 book) and I am now considering moving up to the 4-6 book. I was also looking at Corn & Beans or Radishes (or both???). I was also thinking maybe electricy and/or magnetism. GEMS: This just stumbled onto my radar and I am impressed. There are a lot of choices so I am hoping someone can point me to some 'gems' :D that we can consider. There haven't been any real science request other than the human body (but I think I've got my path for that one already) so I am open to anything really!
  3. If so, can you tell me about it? Specifically: What age kids? I'll assume you used it with a spine or text or other program, since it seems to be all experiments, if so which? What did you like/dislike about it? Do you feel like the activities made a clear connection to the concept you were covering? Anything else you want to share? Thanks!
  4. I borrowed a couple of these off a friend, and I love them! The kids love them! The equipment really IS about the house and I like the scope of what they teach. So other TOPS users, I'd love feedback on what units you have liked and which you have not liked so much. Getting them to Australia is expensive, and they are not commonly available 2nd hand. I'm particularly thinking this year of physics type units.
  5. Anyone else use this? How do you keep it accessible for the kiddos? Any tips on organizing it to make it more user-friendly? I ordered it last year, then realized that the set up required enormous amounts of work. Plugged through it slowly, and at last - we have it all set up. My kiddo (6) loves it. It's a nice supplement. I'm finding that since we have it as a supplement - I often forget to pull it out. I would like to find a way to keep it more accessible for the kiddo. At the moment, I have all of the pieces stored in an Ikea Trofast drawer. The "job box" is in a different location, and I think that's one stumbling block. Having all the pieces jumbled together in a drawer might be another. If you've used this, would you share some organization tips? Thanks!
  6. Is it something that your child does independantly? What ages is it appropriate for? How do you keep all the lentils from ending up on the floor? Can I make my own set?
  7. Anyone use it? It's a really neat way of teaching many scientific concepts, using lentils as a manipulative (unlike TOP's "Corn and Beans" and "Radish" sets, where you plant them). My niece uses it, and my dd got to spend a little time with her and play with it. Really cool! You can get a kit to go with it that includes all the little bottles, strainer, funnel, etc.

  10. How many modules constitute a school year? Or, better asked - How long does each module take to complete? Thanks.
  11. What is your experience? I am looking to supplement Singapore Let's Learn Science with more experiments. This is primarily for a second grader but my kindergartner will be doing it too. I would prefer something that I can put together initially a kit of equipment and not have to gather together a variety of things for each experiment which changes for every experiment. If you have any other ideas I would like to hear them. Sarah

For our science this year, I'm having my kids choose several TOPS units based on their interests and then I'll find other resources/texts to support those topics (probably PH Explorers, and living books). We love the samples on the website, but since those are not the actual format I cannot tell the difference between the "task card" series and the "activity sheet" formats. It looks like the task cards give you more activities at a lower cost, so I'm wondering what is in the activity sheet series to make them more expensive - are there really extensive teacher notes, worksheets, extra extension activities? For some topics (Electricity, Pendulums) there is a title in both formats and that's just confusing me - which do I choose? I'd also love to hear personal recommendations for titles that your kids loved. Oh, they are working at roughly gr 5 and 8-9. Thanks everyone! Nikita
  13. Can anyone compare these? Pros and cons? I was getting ready to buy some books and activities from AIMS and then I started looking at TOPS and GEMS...aaaah! Feeling overwhelmed.
  14. I've been doing a bit of reading about what they have to offer and so far, it sounds pretty good for hands-on science. I'd like to hear from people who have or do continue to use it. What do you like about it? Dislike? Would you recommend to others of prefer something else? I'm not sure what I want to do for science next year with 7yo dd. We did NOEO this year, but I'm not overly interested in using it again next year. I don't want to spend a lot on science but DD has a strong interest in it, so I would like to commit to 3 days a week of science at minimum. I do plan on using living books for most of our curriculum but I'm looking for fun experiments and hands-on type things.
