  1. Kareni, I hope you feel better soon! Pretend I have a group hug emoticon here!
  2. That was the other one I liked for Ds! I love the music shirt! The way I have been keeping up with the BaW thread is via the Activity tab(upper left, second in) which has a menu that includes My Activity Streams, then Content I have posted in. Of course this method means I try to post as soon as Robin puts the thread up on Sundays. ? Welcome! There are worse things than stacks of books and full Kindles which is definitely what this thread provides. I have read Snowblind and really liked it. I wasn’t as fond of the next two in the series which really means nothing because I am anxious to read the fourth in the series! Lol I thought the latest Flavia was sort of in the middle for the series. My biggest fear is that it might be the last one! Any recommendations for Jo Nesbo? I normally prefer to read in series order which appears to indicate Cockroaches should be the first. My memory tells me I have been advised to read in a different order which means I haven’t checked any books out for our current challenge! I am plant to get 1222 by Anne Holt which was on one of Robin’s links. It was compared to Agatha Christie so I HAVE to!https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9743998-1222
  3. I love the T-shirt with the egg and the rooster! I am so tempted to buy it for Ds because he loves T-shirt’s.......Which one is everyone’s favorite? Also there are a couple of books in the Word Wenches letter that I will be adding to the Brit Trip list along with a few of the group’s books like Alice and Wonderland for Tyne and Wear (Thank You!!!!!! VC). Super busy today because my kids have the week off but will have it done tomorrow. Safe travels Robin! We would love pictures......hint, hint! Dd has a birthday on Cinco de Mayo so I am really curious about a wedding celebration with the theme.
  4. You might want to look at Coursera because Dd took a Forensic Science class from a Singapore University several years ago and really enjoyed it. Pretty sure it’s one of the ones that has stayed in touch so it may still exist and it was free.
  5. The Last Kingdom has been on my list for quite awhile so I am glad to know you liked it. I just need to check out who the narrator is on the Overdrive audio book since I know my library has it!
  6. We are going through this with Dd who needs to upgrade and start collecting some nicer pieces for when she launches into a career. Dressy casual is what we are anticipating also. I loved to shop when I was 20 but started hating it with kids which means Dd is not a good shopper. She grew up in cheap T-shirt’s and leggings with a couple of nicer things for church. There is a skill needed to go through a sales rack quickly and grab a couple of cheap items that might be perfect for your daughter. That skill starts with knowing what looks good on your Dd. My Dd has my coloring but is significantly smaller so beyond the leggings etc I couldn’t shop for her with much success. We have been working on learning what looks good on her so trying on lots and are both frequently surprised. We have the luxury of time so sales racks are fine for our dressing room adventures. Your Dd needs to go to large department store....something with a range of quality and prices. She needs to see how things look and feel. She doesn’t need much to start but she will be wearing it over and over so those black trousers need to hold up to lots of wear. There are some really great fabrics out there that are so easy to care for. She needs to know what she is looking for before she goes online and gets frustrated because things don’t look right on her. An afternoon in dressing rooms will show her what she is looking for. On a side note Dd is now fast at sales racks and pulls out an item or two that are frequently really cheap.....she has also figured my needs out so I seem to be building a new wardrobe. Until now my dressy wardrobe has been my two dresses I bought back when I was first pregnant with Ds....quality, Lands End, they have lasted well for 18 years. They were also on sale, maybe $20 each.
  7. We had a great time with the Number Devil. Dd made her own illustrated book showing how to solve each chapter. Her bunnies were hilarious! Books are great and we did them all except Perilous Journey and BA which weren’t written yet. My kids loved Life of Fred....but puzzles also are a wonderful way to supplement math skills. Tangrams were fun. I bought cheap nice shapes but they can also be cut out of colored paper and a book from the library. We did tons of jigsaw puzzles which I picked up at garage sales. Then there are Thinkfun games which are wonderful and have the added advantage of being individual games, River Crossing was a favorite but we owned all that were available when my kids were younger.
  8. I have been busy looking at Robin's Scandinavian Links. I love the mystery \police procedural s and definitely plan to read one this month. I have several series in progress but have never read a couple of the incredibly popular ones, Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson. Decisions! The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo is available on audio so may very well win! The Scandinavian links made me think of one of my favourite books from the YA category that I should have included on the Brit Trip list for Northumbria. The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer was one of my favourite read aloud books ever! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/100476.The_Sea_of_Trolls?ac=1&from_search=true. It starts on Lindsfarne better known as Holy Island.
  9. Pretty sure I know the answer......Rereads are allowed for Brit Tripping! Hugs regarding your end of the semester discoveries. Please keep us updated on the diet. I am trying to lose weight and have chosen to cut portions and snacking for a start. I didn’t want to obsess over the scales so I didn’t weigh myself when I started. Things are fitting better but I am about 6 weeks in and bored. I have started cheating. Dd seems to be hooked on Rivers of London......she is afraid to turn her kindle on and lose her books. Definitely my child! She also has the new Kevin Hearne in that stack. I think it may be the last in the Iron Druid series. i really need to read A Gentleman in Moscow. It definitely sounds like an audiobook for me too!
  10. Well I just messed up the quotes so I guess I will be separating my posts. I also downloaded A River of Darkness but am a bit hesitant about spreading my reading out to include a read a long but hope to read it later this year or next. I have a huge library stack that is on it’s last renewal and for the most part they are books I am interested in. I am looking forward to hearing what you think of A River of Darkness. So Kate Morton.......I think I have read and enjoyed two of her books but haven’t bothered to binge read the rest. I think that says a lot about them.
  11. I am going to post quickly as we are on our way out for a few hours. My Isle of Wight book will be The Day of the Triffids https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10856732-the-day-of-the-triffids. So I am on the Rebel Bus this week! Actually looking forward to a bit of Sci Fi. Still trying to finish my Ann Cleeves https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34318949-telling-tales and I am up to When Maidens Mourn in my CS Harris reread. Robin, I hope your internet issues resolve quickly!
  12. Telling Tales, my Ann Cleeves Northumbria read that I changed to Durham because of a Village name is totally in East Yorkshire. Just read a scene where the apparently “fictional” village’s church steeple can be seen from the Humber. What a relief! Maybe I can get the book finished now that the distances will make sense but I am really sorry to have lost my surprise Durham book. Btw, it’s really common for there to be multiple villages with the same name in different parts of England, It’s always better to program a Sat Nav using the post code as opposed to village/Street if you aren’t somewhat clear on where you are going or you can find yourself heading in the wrong direction. I know this from experience, enough said!
  13. I couldn’t quote everyone but I have to say I became curious enough to locate Far From a Maddening Crowd in Overdrive. I may try it but currently have no room thanks to my on going romance with a handsome man named Sebastian St. Cyr with unusual eyes and incredible hearing...his latest case has taken me to Camelot in London. Apparently the theory really exists. http://www.britainexpress.com/London/Camelot-in-Cockfosters.htm Glad they were able to fix your problem! I do the really fast speed with repetitive parts.....I get bored. Normally I listen at 1:25 speed. My current audiobook is dragging. I picked it for the N in Aven. It’s the first in Elizabeth Peters Vicki Bliss series and is just too light for an audiobook. I would love to make it faster but I can’t understand some of the voices!
  14. Ds needed to become much clearer and was motivated by wanting to be able to verbally communicate with his computer. Some was mumbling, some letter sounds needed to be clearer. There were lots of little issues but learning to enunciate was the main problem. We gave him a mini recorder and each day Ds read a couple of sentences from a literature textbook, listened, and tried again. He really needed to hear it for himself. He spent roughly 2 hours a week working on his speaking over roughly 6 months. He is very clear and confident now.
  15. Robin, I am in the same situation. I just went and looked at my planned book for that square, yes, I also have a book about an early feminist author. Mine is Margaret the First https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25943007-margaret-the-first?ac=1&from_search=true. I can switch but might need ideas because I believe that I googled feminist author's to find Margaret. For me my audio choices are somewhat of a mixed bag. I find that I concentrate a much better on non fiction of I am listening to it. I generally find books from the historical romance and lighter mystery categories frustrating to listen to because I can read them so much faster! I haven't tried Hardy on audio but will admit I suspect that he might be a good audio for me but I am generally listening with headphones and quilting so very little distraction........Btw I hand quilt so no machine operation involved. When I listen and work around the house I have been using my Christie rereads or similar.
  16. Too lazy to delete the extras but consider Amy and Sandy in consultation Woot! Robin, hope this time is the charm!
  17. I had a large swollen lump near the top of my head that appeared about a month before I became pregnant with Ds. It drove me nuts and I finally convinced a Dr. to remove my swollen lymph node although there was huge agreement there was no need. I had even gotten the pediatrician to weigh in. ;). Well, the removal was scheduled and I found out I was pregnant so I canceled the procedure. The lump finally disappeared pretty close to when Ds was born. Btw, The lump was most likely caused by my getting my hair caught and pulling out a really painful huge chunk, home alone with Dd and getting untangled had to happen right then. The hair loss was back of the neck and the lymph node was right side near top. It was painful especially because when I checked it frequently.
  18. They continue in the same location. I think some of the descendants appear in the second one but it was set 200 years later. The next one is another 200 years. The second did feel like a continuation. Regarding Amy's question about good books for Brit Tripping that have fictional locations .............the Pillars of the Earth question made me remember Susan Howatch and her Church of England\Starbridge series. I haven't read them all perhaps the first three but found them very good. As I remember they had adult content. Another series I want to get back to. I will try and get Goodreads updated with this week's activity and the Starbridge series tomorrow. https://www.goodreads.com/series/75351-starbridge
  19. Here is a link for Isle of Wight from Trip Fiction for those looking. https://www.tripfiction.com/find-a-book/page/2/?location=Isle of Wight&btitle&bauthor&genre=Genre... Amy, this might a good time to try Jeanne Dams Dorothy Martin series. It is set in a make believe Cathedral town but has plenty of real places blended in https://www.goodreads.com/series/42205-dorothy-martin. These are in my plans but not on the master list. Sorry!
  20. That’s one I have planned to read pretty much every year. It is one of BF’s favorites and Dd has a copy someplace thanks to her godmother. Pretty sure Dd liked it several years ago. Well my Northumbria book ended up being set in Durham and Yorkshire so far. It’s Telling Tales by Ann Cleeves and it has me pretty confused location wise. It seems to be a mixture of real and made up that because I actually know how long it takes to get between the points I can fix in my mind it is confusing. I set it aside but plan to finish it soon because..... I actually have the new St. Cyr so my series reread just became my priority. I am almost done with What remains of Heaven and am loving these. I missed so many details my first time through that are fascinating. One character (can’t say because of Kareni. ;) )that we both disliked hugely is actually rather sad upon reflection. Isle of Wight........It is one of the locations in Face Down Among the Winchester Geese if you have any interest in that series. I really want to read England, England eventually. I am going to read the Day of the Triffids. I finished listening to a new to me Christie earlier this week called Mystery on the Blue Train with Poirot. I had to do the abridged BBC because that was what I had available. It was interesting, sort of a much lesser Orient Express. Btw, If you haven’t seen the new Orient Express movie with Kenneth Branagh I really loved the fabulous scenery but for me David Suchet is Poirot.......I am finding that I much prefer the audiobooks that Suchet narrates. Hugh Fraser is pretty good but the BBC cast in Mystery on the Blue Train drove me nuts. If it hadn’t been under 3 hours I would have quit. Lesson learned I like being read to by one person.....different voices are good but one person.
  21. I put this one on hold also. It’s very popular. I am way far down the list but there are multiple copies. Good luck with the computer! I loved Pillars of the Earth but long! The newish third in the series is one of my planned books for Brit Tripping. I am looking forward to it. Btw, the second in the series was good also.
